Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Entomology
США
Добавлен 20 апр 2015
Texas A&M AgriLife Entomology, texasinsects.org. We are located throughout the State and can provide advice on control of urban, structural, landscape, garden, veterinary and agricultural pests, and pests that are threats to human health. Our information is backed by science and research at Texas A&M and other universities and is made practical and relevant by Extension Entomologists, educators or agents who work in each county, right where you live.
In broad terms we are divided into urban entomology, veterinary/medical entomology, and agricultural entomology, although our personnel can, and frequently do, cross these lines. This flexibility comes in part because we can call on the expertise of any other member of the project group.

Great resource!
i want insect pins
Do aquatic larvae specimens also need to be boiled?
Yes
Thanks! I am going to try this method!
Very informative, thank you.
Does this work with black widows and other spider?
I have noticed a new trend in gardening in the last two years of people using gin trash for their garden compost but I always understood you should not use that because of pesticides and herbicides that remain in the trash forever what do you think of this? And then are we bringing these type of pests To infest our property with as well? And then it begs the question if Jen trash does have so much pesticide left in it why are bugs being harbored in the waste?
Hey, after preservation, do you need to cover the insects in anything for further preservation while pinned, or are they fine
After they are pinned they should dry out. You should wait 1-4 weeks depending on the size. Don’t leave it anywhere humid. I recommend near a window or a closet. After it’s dried you can put it in a box with glass or put it in epoxy resin which is super cool! See Ya!🫡
After dried u can use clear nail polish to keep it from being so fragile. Just do NOT use it on anything that has little hairs it scales as this will mess it up badly. Only on stuff like beetles cept for the ones that has hairs. But I would only do this if they r gonna be handled alot. If not then u don't have to n just put it in a shadow box

How exactly do I prevent this from happening if I cant really afford an air tight box? What about lining the box with pesticides or heating them up like a greenhouse to have the flesh bugs burrow out of the dead insects then refreeze them? Also would freezing them periodically help this? Moth balls?
Moth balls
What size of insect would you point mount?
I think its mostly up to your discretion, anything where the pins would destroy too much of the insect. I'm an amateur tho so don't quote me on it
does type of alcohol matter??
I believe so. I remember reading that 70%-80% alcohol is good. Anything above or below that will ruin the specimen. At 3:39 he explains it.
Gasoline works very well too
and lighter fluid
I don't have a sheet so can I use a piece of toilet paper or people paper towel
You’ll find that to be too flimsy outside in the field. I use very cheap white tablecloths ordered from amazon. I think I paid $8 for 3. Worth it.
Thank you for this straightforward video!!
The acetone is not wanting to soak in
You probably added too much
Thank you!
hello where can i buy one of those tools, for the toes
Hello I was trying to find a group on fb for butterfly entheusiasts that can help collectors as well as just entheusiasts that photograph or just appreciate butterflies. I do not know any other collectors. Since i could not find a group that accepts collectors i decided to start my own group. I have no memebers because i dont know anyone else. I am wondering if you woukd like to join it and invite others you know to it as well. I want it to be a group that helps others. Feel free to post anything videos or pics of collecting pinning and whatever else butterfly related. Pks help me get this group going. It is called All About Butterflies.
how long does each charge of ethyl acetate last?, can I use the same charge many times?
When I studied entymology in college, we used potassium cyanide added to the liquid plaster of paris. Why is it not used now as it works great, even on coleoptera which are hard to kill. I can't find it in any reasonable quantities so if anyone knows of a supplier that would be appreciated.
Would like to find the supplier too
Thanks for the valuable lesson. I just found today that mines have worms. So sad. 😥
Could you use ethyl acitate to substitute acetone? The BioQuip book on How TO Make An Incect Collectiion says that’s what to use.
Can i use acetone based(i mean acetone as its main ingredient not acetone itself) nail polish remover? Thanks.
Jheng Ong I actually just assembled and used my kill jar this weekend. I used ethyl acitate based nail polish remover and it worked just fine, so I would think that using acetone based remover would also work well. Or if you want to go for ethyl acitate, then just find an acetone free remover.
Sebastian Demarchi I would leave it in the jar for an hour at least. An hour and a half to be safe. If you’re going to use a spreading board if it’s a butterfly, don’t worry about it stiffening too soon. It can be in the jar for three hours without it stiffening up.
Is there a way to preserve it for none wet display?
Unless you inject the bodies with silicone no and...doing this can damage the specimen..you can also use a resin but be careful to mix it throughly and release any bubbles
Absolutely. It's called "inflation" and basically results in a hollow dry skin. You can also fill them with wax or more modern materials. Though wet preservation is much preferred.
@@evanbrown6923 i inflate caterpillars, would stuffing them with cotton work as well?since i never tried and don't wanna destroy a caterpillar if it doesn't work...i like inflation but it is a tedious process...
Extremely useful :)

Hi, I'm working on a project with several universities, USDA, and ASA. We would love to use some clips of your video if you are okay with that. We will credit you and/or your channel on every clip we use. If you could please email me at beank@missouri.edu, that would be great. Thank you!
Thanks for interesting Video! Good luck! Best greetings from entomologist in Ukraine! :)
nicely described
I did these preps 50 yrs ago, when I was at the last year of high school (Turin, Italy)! Nothing is changed in the methods, exept we used paper strips instead of glass slides . Thanks a lot for reminding me of a wonderful time of my scientific training. Now I'm a Surgical pathologist (well ... semi retired), but enthomology training was, in some way, usefull for my profession (how to handle small and delicate surgical specimens). I'm not joking ... Wonderful video!
