Answering Some Common Questions About Laying Granite Setts
Просмотров 3132 месяца назад
We have recently built a ramp in our yard that leads up to a loading bay which will allow us to load and unload delivery wagons. To ensure that the surface can support the weight of the trucks, we have useed granite setts to construct the ramp. We have taken this opportunity to answer some of the most common questions we get asked about the laying process and using Flowpoint Rapid Setting Grout...

Why do you want the lines so straight? Looks better when it's more random, to my taste at least
Nice to see it jointed with hot pitch & not some swept in resin
Thanks for a great video. I am happy to see the popularity of the use of cobble and the craftsmanship.
Whatever you are building looks nice and good to hear the charming northern accent.
I live in Dallas, TX USA. We have very expansive clay soil (moves both vertically and horizontally as it dries out and rehydrates). What special considerations need to be taken for laying setts on expansive soil?
Excellent Mike and your side kick .I'll be up soon to get some kerbs off you with the black strip in
looking good Mike
The amount of work polishing thst up is ridiculous
Why all the straight joints? 100% those joints will crack
Who laid those sets? They want sacking
We always joint granite sets with hot Pitch.
19,500. views and only 3 comments. all are speechless at the sheer joy or trowel-less pointing.
Thanks for the videos! When doing a large area, do you not need to do the whole lot in one go so the grout joints aren't compromised?
few questions ive got if anyone can help me please, 1, whts the average amount a person should be laying 100x 100 sand stone cobble sets? 2 what is the labour cost for doing so? ground all ready prepped 3 we have 55m2 and im not sure if customer will pay for flowpoint, how much per m2 would you charge to point up using a mortar bag? using sand and cement. i reall dont want to over charge the customer, but at the same tim i dont want to under price myself either,,,,ive been mugged off big time on day rate with him,,so time for price if anyone can help us out please thank you👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It Does Not Work, Not Good For Driveway, Mine Got Broken By The Mortar Joins. Good For Walking ??? YES Good. Amén.
Are all these flow pointing systems the same
Brilliant !
Excellent tutorial, master class …thank you pal !
Great video, thank you - please could you advise: How long would you leave the setts after laying before pointing/jointing with Flowpoint for example?
Hello, It depends on the weather.... but normally it would be fine after a day or two once the mortar has gone off. Thanks. Michael
Cobbles? Cobblers, they’re setts, granite setts. Purlease.
Ever heard of polymeric sand? Honestly this technique looks terrible. Work that hard to lay the stone and finish it like this. Not good my guy.
Jeez man some state them setts are in
😓 *PromoSM*
Do you ever have any issues with efflorescence. Thanks
Hi, I have just finished flowpointing my cobble patio. It looks great except that there is the odd bit here and there that could do with topping up or levelling a bit. I take it that there is no harm in going over the whole patio again? The flowpoint would go a long way as there wouldn't be many gaps to fill. Thanks
Yes
You're the Bob Ross of grout. Thanks for the content and steady-voiced guidance!
Hi, thanks for the video. Great work. What was the mix that you poured on at the end? and how long would you wait before hosing it away to clean it off the cobbles? thanks
Hello, the grouting compound we use at the end to fill the joints is called Flowpoint, there's more information on the website about how to use it. It's a cement based slurry and is rapid setting so depending on the time of year it can take anywhere between 10 minutes or an hour to cure. It setts like concrete!! really robust.

HI. I have an area that is laid with 150mm cubed, rectified granite setts which were badly pointed by the contractor. The pointing has eroded in places and filled with dirt that grows moss etc. Some of the erosion has gone down to approx 30 - 40mm and so the setts are becoming loose. If I were to clean out the dirt from the setts would you recommend the same pointing method with Flowpoint to repoint them? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Mr Eastwood, Yes you could use Flowpoint for your job. Flowpoint doesn't have strict depths to set in so you have some flexibility. If you want to give me a call so I can expand feel free. 07388 198476

Christ who laid those setts, stevie wonder? They’re shocking.
looks like a blind person laid it
At what cost you need a right few Bob to even think about using it ££££
Bellissimo 🌹 Excelente 🌹
Look to me some the joints have shrunk then need top up that right 🤔👍
Hi mike. I’m building a drive way. I’ve dug down 250mm already . Looking to put 150mm mot 50mm of bedding 4x sharp sand 1x cement 50mm of cobble. What are your thoughts on this mike, or should I stick to your earlier instruction of 5x grit/sand 1x cement 50mm bed?. Cheers
What is your bedding mixture and height for drive way cobble?. Also, what excavation depth would you dig to?. Thanks 😊 Love your work
We normally lay the setts on about 70mm of 5 parts grit sand to one part cement. The depth varies depending on the ground but normally about 100mm. Thanks
@@mikefish7779 Hi Mike. What is the ratio please?. Is that 2x sharp sand 3x grit 1 cement 5:1 Or can I buy grit sand as a bulk bag from merchant. I’m building a driveway. Excavated 250mm down Was going to do. 150mm mot 50mm bedding 50mm cobble Bedding being 4:1 4x sharp sand 1x cement. What do you recommend?
Hi, doing a driveway too. What did you do in the end? I'm think of a having a setts at the front edge of the drive and was thinking 75mm mot, 100 concrete at the base for this edge. Did yours work out OK? Thanks
Would this system work on round cobbles? My drive is round cobbles and I’ve just jet washed out the dirt from between them and would like to replace the dirt with grout to aid water run off and prevent weeds.
Hello,.yes it would be perfect for that application, because it's quite runny it will accommodate all the various shapes of your cobbles. If there's anything else I can do let me know. Thanks
Look at the state on those setts !
Fair play, great videos. I've looked at a few of the older ones too. Presumably the flow point is non permeable as your mortar is bed on concrete. I've got Indian sandstone with 'easy joint' that is not appropriate for a non permeable base. So I'm thinking of using Flow Point on my slabs, same for a small section of old rustic slate (odd sizes & shapes). Do you think flow point is suitable given there are undulations in both materials? Presumably so, if flopwoint is used on cobbles? Just a little worried obout any water settling but there is a fall in both....
Hello, the Flowpoint will be suitable for your job. It isn't permeable so they'll need to be somewhere for the water to go but if you have a fall it'll be fine. If there's anything else you can get me on 07388 198476. Thanks. Michael
All your videos are excellent, well explained and easy to understand.
i use a sand and cement slurry to grout cobbles and basically same process except waiting times longer
Sawdust is the best way to clean the face of the sett after washing grout off
V. useful! Thank you!
The Bob Ross of paving. :)
Love the stuff
Hello
Great video but how to price that up per square thanks
Hello, normally on average we find a two man team will lay about 10 m2 per day. Of course it will depend on the design. Hope that helps. If you have any more questions get in touch at www.granitesettsdirect.co.uk
So are you just putting 1 bag down at a time, waiting for it to start setting and then rinsing off. Then doing another a bag and so on? Can you see where one batch finished and another started?
Hello, sorry for the late reply. It depends on the weather as to how many bags we put down. If the weather is good we don't do more than a bag at a time, if it's a bit overcast which is preferable then we might do two at a time. No you can't see where one bag begins and the other ends. If there's anything else you need let me know. Thanks
