Hello and welcome to Reading the Classics.
Here, you will find my collection of first pass readings of classic stories and poems with no music to distract you. As I am reading everything for the first time, you get to experience the story as I do - which I find a whole lot of fun to do!
I started this channel as a way to teach myself to speak more slowly (as I am quite a fast talker when I'm passionate about the subject matter!). But as I have had so much fun reading, and people have responded so well to it, it has become much more of a way to share great stories and poems with you all.
Make sure to leave any suggestions for stories or poems you'd like to hear in the comments!
Don't forget to like and subscribe to my channel for more classic stories and poems.
Stay tuned for more enthralling tales that will ignite your imagination.
Happy listening!

Shakespeare's Hamlet RETOLD by Charles Mary Lamb | An Audiobook Narration
In this video, I present Shakespeare's Hamlet, retold by Charles & Mary Lamb - an audiobook narration.
I did not know that these re-tellings existed. Moreso that they were written 200 years ago! If you have ever wanted to say you understand Shakespeare's works but don't know how to read them, these re-tellings are for you!
My only complaint... they have taken a page from Arnold Rimmer's punctuation guide....
I had to start with Hamlet, as it is not only the most popular but its also just a fascinating story. But I have every intention of doing most, if not all of these over time.

Dagon by H.P. Lovecraft | An Audiobook Narration
Просмотров 24414 дней назад
In this video, I present Dagon by H.P. Lovecraft - an audiobook narration. One of Lovecraft's earlier tales, which was apparently inspired by a dream. Glad I don't live in his dreamworld! You can definitely start to see the formation of Cthulhu Mythos in this one. But it stands on its own as a fantastic read. I feel like he got better at connecting his thoughts in his later writings but this st...
And All The Earth A Grave by C. C. MacApp | An Audiobook Narration
Просмотров 8921 день назад
In this video, I present And All the Earth A Grave by C.C. MacApp - an audiobook narration. Okay, this is about as macabre as it gets. Probably takes someone with a special kind of humour to enjoy it... which I guess is me! An accounting error at a coffin manufacturer... what a premise! And where it goes there are not descriptors that will do it justice. Don't forget to like, comment, and subsc...
The Feast of Nemesis by Saki | An Audiobook Narration

In this video, I present The Feast of Nemesis by Saki - an audiobook narration. I do not understand how there are next to no versions of this on RUclips and the version there are have only a handful of views. This story is brilliant. I suppose it might just be my sense of humour... but hey, I get to pick the stories and this one deserved to be picked! What if, instead of celebrating Christmas o...
The Law of Life by Jack London | An Audiobook Narration
Просмотров 107Месяц назад
In this video, I present The Law of Life by Jack London - an audiobook narration. I couldn't quite bring myself to start with The Call of the Wild (despite The Simpsons urging me to...). Instead, I chose one of his short stories about an old Inuit chief named Koshkoosh. His tribe has is packing up and leaves him with just a small fire and a pile of sticks. What starts out as a description of th...
The Coffee House of Surat by Leo Tolstoy | An Audiobook Narration

In this video, I present The Coffee House of Surat by Leo Tolstoy - an audiobook narration. Theology, philosophy, this story reflects on the themes of religious tolerance and the futility of human attempts to understand the divine. What I loved most about this tale, is how we get this fascinating intellectual debate, followed up with a beautiful parable. Tolstoy shares a timeless tale that will...

Désirée's Baby by Kate Chopin | An Audiobook Narration
I haven't read Hamlet since studying it in school many years ago. I found it confusing with so many characters to remember. Hearing it in modern English like this was very interesting. In Japan, where I live, many traditional stories end tragically like this one. It's interesting that even in Shakespeare's day people liked these "no happily ever after" tales.
I did not know these versions existed. Plenty of people struggle with Shakespeare, I love how accessible this is. I might do The Tempest next when I come back to these tales, as that is my favourite Shakespeare. Thanks for listening!.
@@readingtheclassics I'd love that.
I listen to audiobooks every night. This is my favorite channel. Having a real voice actor reading the stories is so much better than the AI voice so many channels use.
Thank you so much! I can't stand those AI ones either. This started off with me just trying to talk slower but now I am reading stuff I always wanted to but never made time for!
Will the full story be coming out eventually?
Hi there. The full story is linked in the short and available on my channel. I only upload shorts for stories I have read in full. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/MIAtwdr84_s/видео.html
@ thank you!
Thanks for listening!
Dude the thumbnail WTF bwhahahahahah!!!!
Yeah, I know... I try not to use AI to create the images so I'm stuck with whatever is in Adobe Stock. And he was the fish-goddiest looking thing I could find... hope you enjoyed the story though!
@@readingtheclassics I shoulda put you read it very well too, lol just thought was funny. God bless man, and its awsome as HP contributed to so many genres that people dont even realize.
Thanks so much! Agreed, never thought I would enjoy his work but definitely love his style.
SO much better than the official ones 🙏 thank you!!
You are too kind! Thanks so much!!
Fantastic read!! Love your channel!!!❤❤
Awww thank you so much!
Another interesting listen. Lovecraft creates such interesting worlds. You read so well I look forward to each of your videos.
I love seeing his writing at different stages of his life. Thank you so much!!
Your stories leave me in peals of laughter! This one was full of political jabs and speaking to the banality of mankind. So, so fun.
This one was so good. Random selection, had no clue what I was in for. I just love that it stems from an accounting error, cant get much more banal than that. Thanks for listening!
Nice pun
Thanks for listening!
Hah, great story to enjoy your morning coffin with. *COFFEE, I meant coffee.
Haha, love it! Thanks so much for listening!!
@@readingtheclassics You have quite the collection here, I will be back to consume more.
Thank you! I am having a blast choosing these.
I thought at first, oh that IS a bit harsh. And then I thought, no that's about right...
Haha, indeed! Really love this one. Saki has such a great dark humour style.
Oh, Saki is delightful. Such a twisted mind. This one had me rolling on the floor right from the start. Thanks for another fun story.
Oh good! I couldnt stop laughing either. This story has next to zero videos or views on RUclips but it was just too good not to do!! Thanks for listening!
I don't have time for "The Call of the Wild". Thanks for a good story. This one struck a bit close to home. I am getting to be of an age where keeping up with the tribe has become increasingly challenging. There is a part of me that takes comfort in our modern society and loving children who will drag me along with them at great cost, even when my task in life is finished. But there is also a part of me who is attracted to just letting nature be nature and letting go of the struggle. Here in Japan there used to be a custom of taking the old ones, who could no longer contribute, up into the mountains and leaving them there. I wonder what went on in the minds of these elders. Nature truly only favors the species and not the individual. But that is how the species survive.
I guess 'survival of the fittest' was going through the elders' minds. But at the same time, it is such a harsh concept. The parts where Koshkoosh is talking about how he wishes his son would come back or that his grand daughter would have left more wood... but that he didn't do those things for his father really highlights that idea of the circularity of nature. This one hit too close to home for me for a whole different reason but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Thanks for listening!
❤Thanks! A dark, gothic and gloomy dream! Wasn't it?
I went into this one not knowing what I was getting into. What a ride it was! Thanks for listening.

One of my great grandfather that lost his mind every time he was around the Bible.
This story seems to resonate with a lot of people for various reasons. Glad I chose it. Thanks for listening!
Great reading. Was this written before Tolstoy became a Christian? Edit: a little search tells me that it was written after What I Believe, in which he expressed his Christian faith.
You could probably argue that this has a definitive tone of one who believes in the unity of all religions. But I don't think it needs to be that clear cut. Tolstoy had a beautiful way of articulating moral, philosophical, and theological messages. No matter where he was in his journey at this time, this tale has as much a philosophical point as a religious one. I honestly just picked it because I wanted to read another Tolstoy piece and this one was the first one I found. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening!
This is an expression of any sect; that's the entire point.
@@lynnfisher3037 Yes, I get that. I found it informative that Tolstoy himself would make this point, as a Christian. As a side note, Wikipedia says that this story was written by a Frenchman and Tolstoy translated it into Russian, making some changes to appease the censors.
One of my favourites from Lovecraft
Hey, thanks for watching this short, I didn't think anyone would watch these. And I agree, one of his best!
@@readingtheclassics Always an audience for Lovecraft mate 👌
What an interesting concept. And you were especially good at bringing the story to life. I look forward to each of your postings.
The structure of this one was so good. And you're too kind - thank you!
Great story with awesome moral. Thank you
I enjoyed this one too! Thanks for watching.
I found this one harder to follow. Maybe it was just because I was listening late at night.
It had some interesting choices for some of the sentence structures which didnt help. I didnt like that flow much either. That said, it felt like a childrens story, exploring the imagination of a person taking a beach walk. I enjoyed it but it certainly wasnt up to his usual writing standard.
I live in the mountains in a very wooded area. This hit a bit too close to home. Creepy. Woods are not to be trusted! Thanks for another great story.
I seem to have a knack for picking ones that resonate with you! Glad you enjoyed it.
had to watch it on my own because my teacher wouldnt stop pausing the video every 1 minute just to give dumbass summarysz of whats going on
Awwww that is not a fun way to listen to a story! Glad you got to listen on your own, this is a great one!
Deodorizer of Dead Dogs Provider of meat for cats division in social rank 17 children? Federated Union of Old Maids Insurrection of Cats Procession of Dead Dogs The Dead going on strike Misrule to the Dukes of Disorder This hilarious story of the socially mismatched Deodorizer of Dead Dogs (apparently a lowly position) and the mother of 17 who sells meat for cats (a highly honored profession) was 100% delightful. I loved the "Federated Union of Old Maids" and the striking of various groups, dead or alive. Ambrose Bierce is a quirky genius.
I have a bit of a backlog of longer stories I want to start working through but sometimes I run out of time, so I scan for more short ones. I read the first line of this and knew it was next. No matter what he is writing, Bierce never fails to entertain. I just wish he had found the comma a little more....haha!
@@readingtheclassics Looking forward to the longer stories, too. You do exceptionally well reading these classics. I hope more people find your channel.
Thank you so much!
Wonderful narrator!
Thank you so much!
Weird, haunting and a bit sad. A good Lovecraft tale expertly read. Thank you for this.
I liked the somewhat straightforward but still obscure philosophical nature of this one. Thanks for listening!
loved this.
Thank you for listening!
Wonderful.
Thanks so much!
Hilarious. thank you for reading to us, Lee. (your name, correct?) I love it.
That's me! Wacky but fun story. Thanks for listening!
@@readingtheclassics I hope this is okay, I download your readings to my 2K drive so I can just listen when I want. Thank you so much!
Such fun language. "sat next to his companion, the fire, and encouraged it with logs" "his knees smote each other" "the boots of fear were suddenly upon the little man's feet" "he made a little speech, meant for a prayer" All in all a quaint, hilarious tale.
The opening line got me, "four men came to a place that was wet" ... haha. Random story but I loved it. Thanks for listening!
I have also pondered the strange world of dreams. Which is the real life and which is the "fake" one? Is that person in my dreams who I am? Who I wish to be? Some version of myself heavily judged by my mind? And then to tie it to the death experience is another interesting twist. I loved this one.
I think at some point we all awaken still feeling like we are in the dream and can see something from it. Hawthorne is so good at this subject matter. Love how he makes you ponder things. Thanks for listening!
@@readingtheclassics I have been really liking your choices.
Thank you. Your reading is excellent.
Thank you so much!
And how would our societies fare with a justice system like this? Interesting thought. I love the description "semi-barbaric". Which of our countries could not be described this way? Thank you for another interesting story read so well.
It is an interesting thought. When you think of all the dictatorships in the world, its not a stretch to see them consider something like this. Thanks for listening!
Thank you
Thanks for listening!

Thanks for listening!
Oh, dear. This one hit a bit too close to home. Wow. The emotions that come when faced with death of a loved one. My husband almost died of heart disease 10 years ago. Although I never longed for the "freedom" the narrator mentions I will never forget that unreal feeling of how life can change in an instant. Thanks for another tale to transport me to another time and another possible outcome. I really love your choice of stories.
Awww, sorry to hear that. There is so much great literature out there. I love the uniqueness of Kate Chopin so I thought I would try some more of her work. Thanks for listening!
I remember being terrified by this story as a teen when I read it first for a school assignment. Still pretty terrifying and your reading of it adds to the creepy sensation. Madness from the madman's point of view.
I had a bit of fun with this one. It is not often that I have read the story before so normally its my first pass interpretation. Since I knew this one, figured I would put some character into it! I think this is one his best stories. Thanks for listening!
❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙌🙏
Thanks so much for listening!

Another gripping story. I enjoyed it.

Great content! Thank you! New subscriber here!❤
Thanks for listening
thank you for this story❤
Thank you for listening!
Shudder. A weird tale leaving me with questions. I wish I understood the politics and implications of the era because I feel there is more to the story than just the surface storyline.
I would agree with that. I like the simplicity of the story but there would definitely be more interesting setting detail to dig into. Thanks for listening!
Your narration is superb. Thank you.
You are too kind. Thank you for listening!!
Your narrating skills are amazing, and your voice is very pleasant. Subscribed!
Thank you so much. You are too kind. Thanks for listening!
I had to listen to this a couple of times. Not my favorite but an interesting perspective on the "ghost" phenomenon. Looking forward to the next story.
I actually had to re-read this one. My first pass was confused! Thanks for listening!
Oh, I loved this one. The ending was hilarious. And well read as always.
Such a quirky little tale. Thanks for listening!
Lovecraft is remarkable in submerging his reader in the world he has created. To virtually experience the sounds and feelings of being lost in a cave. The terror of the unknown. Although I guessed the end before I got there I still thoroughly enjoyed the story. Well read as always. Thanks.
I completely agree. Even with many having predictable ends, his descriptive narration is really something. Thanks for listening!
