Added some drums
Eventually, the tune here is Alone In Kyoto by Air. No drums are on the original, but I was so inspired by their beautiful recording that decided to have a go with adding some drums of my own.

BE CAREFUL with the "Acousticon" shell material, drumming friends. Use a backing plate if you switch out the tom mount to something better than original stock.

I added drums to Suspension ( composed by Anthony Gonzalez / M83 )

And...at it again... I so enjoy experimenting with adding drums/drum parts to songs that didn't originally have them. As well - i love M83. Pretty much everything Anthony Gonzalez has done is SO great. A few years back, he wrote the musical score for Cirque du Soleil's •Volta• show. This is me having a go at adding a drum-set part to his composition entitled Suspension, from the Volta soundtrack.

9/11/2001 FDNY Manhattan Dispatch Audio better clarity
Просмотров 553Год назад
For years I've hoped that someone would take the 4-hour audio file from the FDNY 9/11 radio transmissions, and clean up the noise in an effort to make the voices more intelligible. These heroes deserve to be heard more clearly. I'm a musician who grew up with cassette tapes, so a little tape hiss doesn't bother me. But the "signal-to-noise" ratio during parts of the original recording, in conju...
20” Avedis Zildjian & 20” Cymbal Craftsman Ride Cymbals
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 года назад
Paul Francis worked for the Avedis Zildjian Company for 32 years. In my opinion - which is shared by countless other drummers: Paul is simply one of the very best artisans around. As he's now out on his own, I asked the Cymbal Craftsman if he'd be up for the challenge of making a heavier & more versatile version of one of my favourites: my 20” Avedis ride cymbal. I had some specific goals in mi...

what was your set-up to tape the drives?
Thank you for this. I drove this so many times with my dad. Brings back memories. You even have wbz playing. ❤
Oh man, that Polar radio ad was lodged deep in my memory.
set to the miserable news backdrop that ultimately culminated in the events of March/April 2003, the dark winter lingered long that year. Comfort was hard to come by in the dorms. The cold wind would wail in through the windows whenever you had them open to smoke.
I was 12 at the time. I remember one of my favorite things in the ‘90s as a kid was the Big Dig exhibit at the MOS
Thanks for video. Like many of you, I commuted during all this. How apropos they mentioned the big dig in the broadcast. I think I lost 10 yr off my life
I was 4 days old during the recording of this video
In 2003 people were really being told Al Qaeda was considering invading Americans homes…fast forward to 2024 and people turn a blind eye to basic constitutional infringement
Brings 😢 a tear to my eye. I worked as a union laborer construction worker those years, NO cell , NO GPS 😂, i got lost in Boston a lot
I moved to Boston in 2001 and I still remember driving through the seaport district and seeing one of the coolest buildings I’ve ever seen at the time (Custom House tower). Brings back great memories! Thank you!
Seaport district is absolutely 💯 mind blowing 🤯 8n 2024, wow. It's gorgeous and the best water front in any city.. the big dig made that all happen
@@jamie.777 I know its such a nice place now. Same thing with southie. Southie just feels so much different now.
Hearing early “war on terror” news brings back a weird version of nostalgia.
I'm glad now that I had the radio on while I was recording this drive. Weird version of nostalgia is spot on.
This is sooo cool!!!!!!
This is when central artery was still up and elevated I don't think it had underground highway traffic yet and went over the zakim bridge til probably late 2003 or sometime in 2004 but it was less congested but the mbta was still running very good at this time probably until early or mid 2010s when infrastructure started falling apart but big dig billions of dollars project prevented the mbta subway infrastructure from being fixed cause it woulda of cost more billions to fix and state leaders didn't wanna ask for that money again to fix to the t this time.
I was 9 but this brings back core memories driving around with my dad especially when Art Cohen came on the radio
At least some of the double deck section still exists
Thank you for recording the old highway. Was born after its destruction and wanted to know what it looked like
Best recording of them I’ve found on RUclips so far. They sound great! Tons of tone. Just got my master model snare and I couldn’t be happier.
Sounds great! Tim, your vocals are still top notch. ❤️ Susan in oregon formerly of Bunside Records. And booker of Rod Price and Dirt Nap. Hope you are doing well. ❤️
Hi Susan - this is some "old" footage I shot, from The Soul Band album recording sessions, prob 20 yrs ago at this point :) Great times!
I have a late 70s Avedis 20" made in Canada and it's what you were looking for, many of them are in the 2200-2400g range, heavier than Made in USA.
Cool - so with the weight range you mentioned, I imagine the pitch is higher though, yeah?. The instinct that I was chasing down with Paul is whether he could make a heavier version *without* an increase in pitch. I believe his hand hammering is what did the trick.
@@stephanchaggaris9437 Not really higher in pitch, it's in the same range as yours in the video. I'm not sure you'd cut through when playing loud compared to your custom 20" which seems to be much louder and brighter than the Avedis.
@@DynamicRockers Perhaps the crap iPhone mic i used + streaming here on YT has given you the impression that the Cymbal Craftsman ride is brighter than the Avedis. In person, it isn't. Goal achieved.
Great video- thanks. Just got a ‘66 Acrolite and plan on powder coating and you taught me a lot with this vid. Curious how you got the badges off?
thx man - good luck with it! SO.... great question about the badges. Some that I've rescued had no badges to begin with - just a completely naked shell. So in those cases, I acquired period-correct badges online. When a shell still has the orig badge, I've used a "T handle reamer"...that thing that looks a bit like an Awl, but has a series of sharp edges. If memory serves, I carefully secured the badge grommet in a clamp (this is the trickiest part), then turned the T handle reamer (go slowly & methodically) until the grommet thinned out enough to either snap it with a flat-head screwdriver, or it gave out altogether on it's own.
Memories came back as you drove north on the old Expressway. And seeing the new Zakim Bridge up while you were travelling up the incline to the decrepit old High Level Bridge was something else. I was also listening to the WBUR/NPR talking heads confidently predicting that Baghdad will be a piece of cake, that the Iraqis will embrace the US troops with open arms. Little did they know that our troops were in for a nightmare of an occupation. Those who opposed the invasion and we who realized that the whole thing was a mistake, tragedy, and an atrocity only later on took to calling it the War on Iraq by the end of 2004, about the time the new highway will be opened.
How life has changed
Love Tim Pike!
Sounds great. What’s the grams on the CC?
Thanks for sharing this video. Fun fact: the official name of the “Big Dig” was Central Artery Tunnel Project.
Thanks for sharing - having WBUR on is a nice touch for us Bostonians it's amazing how much else has changed along the route over these 20 years.
I’m guessing he or she was the only one listening to that station. BUR is a joke. 😂
Remember when people were taking bets as to which would happen first: the Big Dig being completed, or the Red Sox winning the World Series?
🤣
yeah i remember that!
Steve: You used to play Naturaltone shells, right? What shells do you recommend for high bebop tuning? How do the Vintage E differ from Naturaltone in tuning range/sound? Thank you for any feedback!
I still have a set of all Naturaltone shells, the 9-ply birch. At the time I wanted exactly what Bob Gullotti was playing, which was the 9-ply. That rosewood looking set (can't remember the name of his Eames finish) that he played with The Fringe (& tons of others) was 9-ply Naturaltone with Gretsch lugs & die-cast hoops. You simply cannot go wrong with the Naturaltone shells; tuning range is wide, and the tone is sublime. And it has all of the attack/bite that birch is kinda known for anyhow. Vintage-E is a more specific Vibe, and likely the reason it was introduced much later. Joe was making 6 / 9 / 12 ply straight shells for many years before Vintage-E came along. The thing with the Vintage-E shells isn't necessarily whether the tuning range is different; it's the overall sound & feel that are different due to the "rings". Joe once explained it this way to me, & it made perfect sense: Without the "rings", in a straight cylinder shell, the "compression" inside is different. When the head is struck, the air travels immediately from Top head to Bottom head. When "rings" are used, the air gets "confused" inside (for lack of a more scientific term), and that's why the Vibe is more "spongy". So, if you like the old Ludwig with rings, you will LOVE the Eames Vintage-E shells. It's simply another masterful offering that is different from the straight ply shells.
Nice stuff !
Great vid, thanks for sharing. What did you film it with?
this was done on a small Sharp Camcorder "Viewcam" model VL-E760U - the kind that took those cassette-type videotape things.... "HiFi Monaural" was written on the unit, which always made me chuckle.
What's the difference between the Vintage E shells and their regular shells?
Vintage E has a version of sound rings top & bottom (re-rings). Regular shells are without rings.
I drove this route from 2003 to 2020 and it was interesting to see the old route and to recall the issues with the Big Dig as it affected and changed the traveling I was doing. Definitely nostalgic.
I'm surprised that I had the wherewithal to record this back then, wearing a Sharp video recorder (on those little tapes)... I remember that device proudly advertised "HiFi Monaural" for audio quailty ;)
@@stephanchaggaris9437I was thinking sort of the same thing, that this video resembles a modern camera phone video. One thing is for sure, I will never forget the commuting I did from RI to MA and back again and it only got worse as time went by, Big Dig notwithstanding. That's the sad part to me.
south bay shopping center at 6:30
Beautiful kit, and those drums sound fantastic. Knew a drummer out of CT. Who had an Eames shell kit. Back in 91 or 92 he was playing ina Three piece band, called the Greg Baril Band. At the time they were based out of Jacksonville Fl. The last i saw of Gene was in 2001 playing with Doctor Hector and the Groove Injectors. He was on the Live Album VITAL SIGNS. Gene Melendreras on drums. Recently had a friend send me that record, since my CD was stolen!!
Amazing footage. I can't remember how it was...
Those drums look awesome. I’d love to rescue an old Ludwig or other metal drum soon.
The NPR conversation was the icing on the cake. Thank you for uploading.

I've the same Avedis, and 14 Super Zynn hats, work great together with a 69 Premier 4 pce jazz kit👍
Cool cymbal stand toppers! Are they aluminum?
Stainless Steel..went to a metal shop to have them made
Do we know what the songs involved in the video were?
Hi Robert - the music is what I was playing on my truck's stereo at the time; all by singer/songwriter Colleen Sexton. I'm a musician by trade, and at that time I was to accompany Colleen on some gigs. So I was listening to her CD to make sure I had everything well ingrained in my memory.
@@stephanchaggaris9437 she sounds kinda like Cheryl Crowe
I really like the Cymbal Craftsman.
He was a great man and I was so sad when he passed away 4 years after I graduated.
Rachel if you by any chance read these comments again I still, to this day, use a saying of your grandfather’s. I am now 59 years old so I first heard him say this over 40 years ago. He used to describe an exercise in futility by saying “It’s like pushing a horse up a hill with a rope”. I still use that saying often.
Nice brother - more of these please!!
Hi Stephen. I just stumbled upon this. I was lead trumpet in the 1981-82 LHS jazz band and I don't recall this song at all, but it's been a long time. Are you sure this is spring 1982? Regardless, I also have great memories of Mr. Ayasse and appreciate everything he taught me back then.
Dave, sending you an email now!
positive! Spring of 1982. I promise.
Shari Berkal on drums!
Beautiful drum! That same color was my 1st snare drum from joe back in 95. A 13x3 piccolo. Having drums made at Eames was a life changing experience for sure. Makes world class drums but his snares were always something special...Enjoy:)
Paul is the man!!!
Love it . I just traded my vintage 1974 Gretsch. I bought new as a kid for a 1991 set of Eames. No regrets . They are special.
