Uk Vets based in Hertfordshire deal with all sorts during a normal day. This is a glimpse into their world. Please note that in addition to internal diagnosis [via the bum] there is a castration screen in this film. Not for the squeamish or under 12's. [This is a pilot film that formed the basis of a programme pitch] - I was unsuccessful - grrrr.

When they gelded the stallion, did it hurt? or didn't it feel it because of that needle she put in its testicles?
They drug them very deeply. like when you have a tooth pulled, except they put a lot of sedative in to stop the pain. most Stallions don't feel an awful lot of pain. :)

I worked as a large animal tech here in NZ and assisted in dozens upon dozens of colt castrations. We always, always knocked the horses out for a castration. The vet I worked with had 30+ years of experience, he was super quick, could complete the procedure on a colt within five minutes. To do it on a sedated animal, standing up, seems to take far longer but I would also think that it would be a riskier way to do it. Horses aren't necessarily going to stand still just because they're sedated. Anyway, that was how we would do it. It was certainly interesting watching it performed on a sedated animal while he was still standing.

Why do British clip their horse's coats and cut their manes and tails square like that? It looks stupid and unnatural. They need their coat. Nature put it there for a reason.
because they use their horses for dressage and jumping if you dont know much about horses they sweat alot the clipping keeps them cool while they work patches of fur left are to protect against tac. dressage and crosscountry along with hunt requires a certian amount of skill and uniforms for you and your horse show discipline in every sport they have so you may use your horse for trail riding. they use their horses for extreme sports which takes years of training so all that hard work is there for a reason pick up a book next time you call something stupid.
TheHamadanners I have read about it and am familiar with all that. I still think it is a silly and unnecessary custom. It is just humans not wanting to leave anything natural. This is northern Europe, not the Mojave desert. If the rider is conscious of how the horse is doing, the horse is not going to over heat.

I'm in Texas and at the Stables I ride at they clip their horses coats (some for show others just to keep them cool) If they didn't the horses would over heat in both summer and what little winter we get here.. now they don't take the ear hair in fact that and whiskers on their noses stay. It's not stupid it's helping out the horses so they don't over heat doing a show or training
Believe me I would love to leave a natural look to my horse but she looks ratty when she sweats up and gets uncomfortable because of the excess fur and I love nothing more than a full thick natural mane and tail but the tail end gets all yucky so I cut it to keep it from that but I let it grow out as normal and a long mane is a hot mane so I make it short enough to plait btu long enough to provide protection. :)
Why is everybody freakin' out right if vets went their to do that all horses will get infections or worse so that horse is considered lucky !!
So i went to my barn the outher day and i got to look in a ponys mouth because the vet was doing teeth and it was so cool

It's called twitching. It doesn't hurt them, it's more uncomfortable. The kind they use is actually probably a little gentler than the metal bar kind we use when clipping. It just helps to remind the horse to stand quite.

Miles Schueth UC Davis is one. there aren't that many vet schools in the US, unfortunately. but i'm also planning to become a vet (assuming that's your reason for asking this) and I'm hoping I'll be accepted to Davis for vet school.

Never castrate a stallion while it´s standing. That´s can cause a LOT of trouble. They might be good vets, but that´s so wrong.
well obviously they know what they are doing and unless you are a more qualified vet than they are, you really have no place to be telling them what they should and shouldn't do.
Molly Burn Working for a vet for twelve years doesn't make a vet, make did learn me what is safe or not. First things vets here say is NEVER to castrate a horse standing up..
