Mendelssohn, Songs Without Words, Book 1, Op 19 No. 1
Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words collection comprises 8 books, each containing 6 songs. This is the 1st song, from the first collection of 6, and served as a good introduction to Mendelssohn for me. I enjoyed working on how to bring out a melody with an inner accompaniment, while not neglecting the bass voice. This piece always made me feel like I was "singing" at the piano, a great complement to the other pieces in my program.

Beethoven, Sonata No. 25 in G Major
Просмотров 292 дня назад
This is the 25th of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. It is considered one of the "easier" sonatas, but it is still quite hard! It was good to spend lots of time on a Beethoven sonata that is in my range and develop more musically through the process. 1st Movement: Presto alla tedesca (00:00) 2nd Movement: Andante (05:15) 3rd Movement: Vivace (07:46)
Bach, Fugue in D minor, BWV 851 (John Robin, June 2024 recording)
Просмотров 537 месяцев назад
This fugue in D Minor follows the prelude in D Minor from my previous video. While many of the preludes have become popular, usually the fugues are less well-known except to piano students who might recall studying them. This fugue should be thought of as the continuation of the prelude in D Minor, and indeed, its mood is set up by the mood of the prelude. Fugues are incredibly difficult to lea...
Bach, Prelude in D minor, BWV 851 (John Robin, June 2024 recording)
Просмотров 847 месяцев назад
This prelude is paired with a fugue. It is from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, a collection in 2 volumes of prelude and fugue pairs. In each volume, there is a prelude and fugue in each tonality, and this is from the first volume, on the tonality of D minor. Bach did not write these pieces for performance. They were meant to be personal works to be enjoyed in private, for the benefit of the musi...
Carl Czerny, School of Velocity #32 (John Robin June 2024 recording)
Просмотров 407 месяцев назад
Another study by Carl Czerny that I spent the last 2 months working on. This piece is great for developing evenness between hands when creating one longer line split between them. While it can be practical to use a single hand with long arpeggio fingering (i.e. the usual thumb-crossing pattern), this exercise is meant to help develop a sense of 4-note chord groupings within the single octave ra...
School of Velocity #7, by Carl Czerny (John Robin, April 2024 recording)

I spent another month working on this study, as it has great benefit for developing acute awareness of the individual fingers in the left hand. For fun, listen to last month's version and compare. I spent a lot of time evening out the first 2 notes in each 4-note group.
Pathétique piano sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 13 by Beethoven (John Robin April 2024 recording)
Просмотров 529 месяцев назад
The piano sonata No. 8, in C minor, well-known as the "Pathétique", was written when Beethoven was 27, then published a year later, in 1799. The title "Pathétique" was not given by Beethoven. It was given by his publisher to highlight the tragic quality in its sound. There is much speculation that Beethoven may have been influenced by Mozart's 14th piano sonata (K. 457), as well as Bach's Parti...
Joseph Haydn, Sonata in A-flat, Hob XVI: 43 (John Robin, March 2024)
Просмотров 3310 месяцев назад
This is a playful sonata by Joseph Haydn, to whom Beethoven dedicated many of his sonatas and with whom Beethoven spent some time studying composition in his youth. Haydn wrote 62 sonatas, though 7 of them have been lost. Haydn's work is catalogued under the Hoboken system, with works grouped by roman numerals. Most of his sonatas call under category XVI, with this sonata in A-flat Major being ...
Carl Czerny, School of Velocity #7 (John Robin, March 2024)

A left hand study from Carl Czerny's School of Velocity. This piece helps make you more aware of how evenness in the left hand is compromised between fingers 5 and 4 when the upper part of a fast 4-finger pattern contains a stretched interval. I worked quite a bit on this at slow speeds to develop this awareness, and the final reward is playing at the desired speed with much more comfort and le...
Bach, Invention 12 (John Robin, Jan 2024 recording)
Просмотров 33Год назад
Another invention by Bach, this one in the bright key A Major. This month I picked 2 of the 15 that resonated with me the most, and this is the other one. Similar to Invention 5, there is a sense of continual movement. What comes to mind for me is a grand ceremony. Long trills against triadic accompaniment convey a sense of grandeur, as do the mordents against stepwise triplet rhythm. Played to...
Bach, Invention #5 (John Robin, Jan 2024 recording)
Просмотров 26Год назад
Bach wrote 15 pieces called Inventions. They all feature 2 voices. Like a fugue, each voice has a distinct pattern that repeats, and together the voices overlap at different times. This 5th invention is in Eb Major, and makes use of a mordent, creating a marching effect. The stepwise 16th notes reenforce this. This piece really challenges you to know exactly which two-note step you are on each ...

Beautiful music! I reviewed your channel and found that your content is very good, but the SEO of your videos is very poor. Optimizing your videos for SEO will help increase both views and subscribers.

Thank you so much for sharing this!
Well done!
Thank you!
Nice performance!!! 😀
Thank you!
Ah, I should've been able to guess from those first few haunting, beautiful notes that this was Satie.
This is not Satie, though if there is a modern Satie today, it would be Floris Boere.
@@johnrobin4569 Oh, sorry I misread the "echoes of Satie" lol
@@k-theory8604 With all the math you're immersed in, I can only imagine how instinctive it is to make abstractions like that. To be fair, I think it's the highest compliment to @florisboere that you heard the echoes of Satie as naturally as I did when I first encountered it.
It’s really beautiful, I love it 😭💕
Thank you so much! I will come back to this one many times and make more recordings (our group of friends watches the series every February, we love it so much!)
You have made my eleven year old the happiest person! HUGE smiles the entire song!
So great to hear this! It is a happy tune, and I will keep adding more like this to the mix. :)
