I'm an aviation addict. I've built my own aircraft and now building a second for my father and helping put together a Cessna 172 project (and taking on additional projects. I know I'm an aviation masochist). I also take time to use my plane for some amazing flying in the southwestern US, and work towards my instrument rating. Follow me as I explore my home state of Arizona, and anywhere my budget will allow, for some amazing flying we get to experience here in the southwest.
Rebuilding My Crashed Plane....Removing the Damage and Inspecting
On Memorial Day 2024, I had an incident in N918LN. Luckily, I wasn't injured, and no property or people were hurt. Now it's time to get the rebuild started and get the plane back into the air. In this video I was able to get the wings completed and the rear spar repaired on the inboard section of the wing. Progress! I might actually make my goal for getting back in the air!

Thanks for sharing man! So glad to see you are okay.
Great video thankyou for sharing. Do you think the landing would have gone better with the gear up to prevent it digging into the ground?
@@VRFlightSimGuy the landing gear is fixed and can not retract.
@@zenvairpilot That's settled that haha Thanks for the reply :)
Kudos for showcasing your very human error for the rest of us. You may be saving a life by doing this.
Next video, aircraft comes apart midair from improper rebuild from prior crash.
@ibuildmegas3505 not going to happen. I'm following AC43 closely and using all new factory parts.
Imagine being so starved for attention and wanting to be a RUclipsr that you make a video showing everyone what an incompetent pilot you are?
Don't planes have a low fuel light? My car has one.
@MOAB-UT nope just a gauge. I had to full and one empty fuel tank. the selector was on the empty pne.
@@zenvairpilot Surprising. Install a gauge.
They sell checklists that mount on your dash- it uses 8 dummy toggle switches so you cannot miss a step. You can customize.
I understand that is available as a kit that anyone can build? I would love to do that ! Not necessarily to fly but for the fun and satisfaction of completing a very complex but doable project. Will retire in a year (former Lycoming gas turbine manufacturing engineer and machinist at Sikorsky down the road )and have a 22 x 14 building. Will have to check out their website. Glad it turned out ok for you!
How expensive was the lesson?
@K1OIK so far around 4k
@@zenvairpilot That is not as bad as I thought. Considering the plane must far higher.
Happy to see you got out of that incident unscathed. Unfortunate about the damage but your life is more important.
Are you going to mount the spring gear from the donor, or reinstall your wing mounted gear?
@@5xls wing mounted gear
"missionary bush pilot" sells mechanical critical checklist. just box with switches and labels. maybe implement something similar.
Awesome work looking good. Hope to one day soon order me a kit still trying to decide between the sling tsi high or low wing or a zenith super duty.
all good choices
You make it look easy
@deutschlehrer51 this video had around 50 man hours of work...
I Really enjoy watching your Zodiac 601 HDS videos. You showed the world how important a 5 point saftey harness is. After watching your crash landing and seeing the cockpit video I was glad to see you were able to walk away from the crash. Had you had a regular car seat belt. You could have had some serious lacerations and other possible injuries. Glad you're O.K. Keep up the hard work and 8 Lima November will be up and flying in no time. Keep the videos coming. God Bless Brother!!!
Great video - music sucks.
I agree, music is distracting and sucks.
Looking good!!! Keep going!!!! Wish you were my neighbor, I would love to help repair your plane.
why have a fuel tank was that has 2 minutes of fuel in it?
@@festungkurland9804 it was an auxiliary tank. I don't typically keep it full.
Hello and thank you for all this information. I congratulate you for this extremely instructive video for all pilots - it shows that in all operations of preparation and control of the aircraft, one must not accept to be disturbed. Bravo for your humility concerning your explanations and recognition of your errors. I will provide this information to all my French pilot friends. Questions: was your aircraft equipped with a parachute like the vast majority of French ultralight aircraft or the altitude would not have allowed it to be used. Joël from France.
@@QUICHENOTTES no parachute
The root cause is way, way to common. Gotta be a better way of dealing with this issue. My friend had it happen - landed gear up on grass - far less damage. We of course must endeavor to use our superior aviator skills so we don't have to use our superior piloting skills.
a little turtle wax and that will buff right out
also try to have reasonable fuel in both tanks if possible
@@user-pe4xf6hd5q it was the third tank that was empty.
Think you for teaching us the importance of using a checklist properly….I wonder if the bird flipped over could you have remove yourself out of the bird? Canopied ac scare me for this single issue…regards
I watched the intro several times, and on 0.25x speed... He aviates, is calm and composed till the very last moment! (One big lesson to learn - don't have lose things in the cockpit that can fly around and hit you in the head...). Otherwise, as Chuck Yeager said: "If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. (...)" [ If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing. ] Also worth noting the outstanding positive attitude, that should define any good pilot -- crashed plane still in the field and he says "rebuild is gonna begin shortly"... Solid pilot and great character (making this video and posting it!)
Larry --what does Jeff of JR Aviation do for a living? Because that is what l want to do for a living.

Thanks for posting this video I am really glad you are okay!
I am glad you didn’t kill or hurt yourself. Everything else is recoverable with time and efforts
Stop flying!
Thank you for sharing this experience, man!!! You are alive and not damaged at all!!! You family is happy! Enjoy your live!!!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm dreaming of getting a ppl and these kind of videos help me understand aviation better.
Fluids are the first items on my pre-flight inspection before I even get into the airplane. With my airplane, I can't take off if either wing tank is below 1/4 take (let alone empty). I'd understand taking off with an empty tank if your airplane has more than 2, but other than that, dont see why you would operate on one tank?
this plane has 3 tanks. it was an auxiliary tank that was empty.
Every time you wipe away metal shavings with your bare hand I cringe a little. A soft glove would be safer. Good luck with your build, hope it’s up soon!
Larry --what engine?

Great video, great honesty and a great lesson. But, how did you film the outside shots of you flying???
@J1mmyWA I was going to test a insta 360 camera that morning.
Thank you for the video/lesson! Glad you are okay.
Larry--does your repair work have to be signed off on by an A&P?
@tomlovinggood265 no, I hold the repairman certificate for the plane.
An upgrade lets go! 🛫🔥
Awesome project, very cool
Reminder Fuel is very important .
Honest. But I am not going to fly with you. No excuse for this accident..
Larry! are you looking for a video editor? let me know, I can help.
I like watching videos like these, but the music drives me nuts.
Terrible landing maneuver. The cultivated land was ideal to not damage the plane so much. But the worst thing was interrupting the checklist twice. You have not had an adequate flight instruction.
Farmer’s field trashed. All because of a phone call.
@@sweynforkbeardtraindude he didn't care. he was more concerned we would get injured getting the plane out. he harvested it three weeks ago.
I always takeoff with full tanks. Problem avoided. Prop strike usually requires engine teardown.
I had two full tanks. the auxiliary tank was empty. 20 gallons on board wrong tank was selected.
@@zenvairpilot Is checking the level of the aux tank on the checklist? I’m glad you made it down safely to fly another day. 👍
..... country road.@@zenvairpilot
3:24 - Third mistake you make, when that fan up front stops turning, you don't immediately put your nose down to maintain speed above stall. In fact, you immediately make the deadly turn back to base, and 5 seconds later do even worse, pull your nose up at 3:29. You're lucky to be alive. Please take some gliding courses and learn to fly the wing, not the engine, before you destroy any more planes :-)
what you can't see are the power lines right in front of me. I had to turn 30 degrees to avoid the power lines.
these are cheaper planes but that is very weird to me that there isnt a auto switch valve. For something as flying that boggles my mind even in 2024 that isn't a thing.
I don't understand why you would have one tank empty in the first place assuming you have a left/right tank setup. I dip my tanks prior to every flight with a calibrated stick.
@@jcheck6 Left right and Auxiliary. three tanks. lest and right mains were full, Aux was empty.
Wow thanks for the insight. Really inspirationnal. Hope it will be good for you
