I always tought that the best way to tank hits is to avoid everything except than very light ammo. But I have to admit, this is really nice. You were just chilling letting everyone take their hits while you were just slurping a lemonade. And yet no interior component has been lost. Real amazing, good job !

How does this compare with having the first layer of steel framing touching the hull, and then the second layer being spaced, rather than having both layers spaced?

I've built my own spaced armor design, with better connection points, and it holds up very well. Costs are surprisingly low, with full spaced armor replacements for a 75k cost ship only being about 4k. The upsides are much bigger than the downsides, and completely worth the hassle. The unseen downside is that it makes uour ship larger, so it doesn't always fit in the repair slots at towns.
