Salam alaikum achim! ------------------------------------ Original comment I have to make more effort to see if there are other versions of the word for slave in Hebrew and biblical Hebrew in particular עָ֫בֶד (ebed) is slave in Hebrew, as far as I know. ------------------------------------ Now, this is going to be controversial only to get people to respond by trying to educate me. This IS NOT MEANT TO BE INSULTING. I a accept that people correct me. This is my goal, to be corrected. I have heard that the word for "black person" in Arabic may be in certain regions, like in Gaza, is used to like the word for slave (or something like this IDK). Now I am Jewish. Romans held Jews as slaves after 73 B.C.E. the Arab world had just expanded out of Arabia to take over from the vacuum left by the fall of the Roman Empire when it started to spread north, East & West out of Arabia in the late 600s & early 700s C.E. for all that time Jews had been used as slaves. The semitic language, Arabic predates Islam by thousands of years I believe. So, by the time Islam was spreading far and wide the idea of Jews as Roman slaves may have been integrated into the language. I Yiddish, an immigrant pigeon language of eastern European languages, use the word Goy to describe a none-jew (someone from another nation), an outsider. So, a female Goy is called a "schikse". Now, a schikse can just be a none-Jewish woman or it can mean the woman who comes from outside clean the home, the made. Jews of Europe were mostly very poor, too poor for house help. This type of meaning only started very recently. Now the schikse is more derogatory than Goy because for Jews intermarrying with a Goy husband the kids are still Jewish but if a Jewish man marries a schikse the kids aren't Jewish. I love linguistic studies. It tells us so much of who we are and why.
