I really dislike the whole tone of this talk. I find it very self justifying and punitive towards the addict. Would any other illness be derided and criticised like this. Maybe you should have tried to help him years before he became so ill

There is absolutely nothing a person can do to help or convince an addict to quit. We beg, we pray, we offer tough love, advise, and anything at our disposal. But the true addict or alcoholic must drink to live at a certain stage. Horrible. Divine intervention is probably the only way of help

I used to drink a fair bit but I consider it a lesser method of intoxication. It makes you feel heavy and tired and then shaken up when you wake up. Yuk, I’m happy with a pint of cider every few days, if I want to have a good time I use stimulants. I am not saying I won’t destroy myself with the odd line or two, but I am sure I’ll never go to oblivion with booze because real life is preferable to excessively drinking. Stimulants are no fun in excess either but I don’t think people are aware enough of the negative effects of withdrawal and tend to medicate that with more of the same. One has to mix the pleasures up a bit so you don’t get too clobbered by any particular one. Moderation in all things.....
