Roman Fort Ruins, Manchester
Welcome to our exploration of Mamucium, also known as Mancunium, a significant Roman fort located in the Castlefield area of Manchester, North West England. Founded around AD 79, Mamucium served as a vital military outpost within the Roman province of Britannia. This fort was strategically positioned near two major Roman roads, facilitating the movement of troops and goods.
As we delve into the history of Mamucium, it is essential to recognize its role as a garrison for a cohort of Roman auxiliaries. Beyond the fortifications, a thriving civilian settlement, or vicus, emerged around the fort. This area was home to soldiers' families, merchants, and various industries, contributing to the e...

When next
Maybe "Roman Fort Ruins, Manchester"? Or has Manchester been ruined by the Roman Fort? Just a thought!
A large percentage of the Shambles is reproduction. There was a lot of outrage when the empty sculled planners, apart from the rattling of a pea for a brain inside, decided to totally move the building and RESTORE most of it. They then surrounded it with glass and concrete tower blocks instead of landscaping it. Very in(n) keeping? I had many happy hours in the original pub and restaurant and in the stamp dealers above. Most of the original Manchester has now either disappeared or been converted into overpriced luxury flats.
@@HaveyLevene thank you for your comment I personally don't like Manchester as you say these overpriced skyscrapers with 400+ flats yet we have people sleeping on the streets in tents outside the town Hall area. I do think Manchester is losing a lot of its history
bet you did not know the lake was originally a marsh, spring fed up by the pillars end if you go back you will see water flow from the missing blocks. gl
We wasn't aware of that definitely maybe worth a trip back in a few weeks. We will look at the old maps and see if it's shows this. Thank you for your comment and sharing the information

@@cartman668222 thank you for your comment, that must of been pretty good 👍
I was only about 8 so dont remember much there was allotments near the tunnel people used to grow vegetables but they was also abandoned around same time as station due to vandalism sadly
I think they need to get the railway back
Yes it would be amazing especially coming over the 13 arches and through the countryside. However though we would lose a brilliant nature walk.
@ladsonthetrails it needs a train back
@@JoshHodginsTrains it would be really good especially a steam train 👍
This is excellent lads! Keep them coming ⭐️👍🏼

Happy New year, its great to be back. We working on 2 other videos which hopefully will be out this week and next week 👍
@ladsonthetrails good I am glad
You'd think some background research would have been in order.
It's coming back
Maybe black Harry was " BLACK " , did it ever cross your mind ? , don't feel the need to be too PC , the tunnel had been inspected and was under repair but the machine they brought in to do the job was found to be too big to get in the tunnel so was sent away for modification , it was then the tunnel collapsed resulting in the demise of the two houses
That end building attached to Rivington house was the stores, got set fire to few months back so they knocked it down
Feeder canal 4 elton res
There and old road behind u near the river and old Anglo saxon forr beside caravan park and used 2 be double lines n there historical information on goose ford farm
Many thanks for your comments, we will look further into things and maybe revisit to see what else we can discover.
Great video lads , i tried researching this disaster a few years ago but got nowhere , there's a lovely plaque comemerating the loss of life in St Augustine's
its great to go to before you have a trip out on the train from East Lancs
@@chrisgarvey4614 Thank you for your comment, yes I enjoy getting on and off the train, the museum with a day rover ticket is also free entry.
This brought back memories. I'm from Shipley at the other side of Bradford, and used to come here regularly. Trouble is, now I would be unable to climb the stairs. I think there are a lot more outside exhibits than there were.
Were the people who died recovered? Or are they still buried in the collapsed tunnel shaft under their houses? I’ve heard there is a whole train including a driver in another Lancashire tunnel collapse to this day.
@@MrTreacletime The bodies are recovered not to sure where they are buried. I've not heard about the Lancashire one do you have any further information?
the houses that collapsed on Temple drive were never rebuilt and there is still a gap in the house numbers where they were and the tunnel had been inspected and was in the process of being repaired but the machinery that was brought in couldn't get in the tunnel and was sent away for alterations when the tunnel collapsed
Nice video, subscribed
@@NiceCakeMix thank you we was in hebden bridge for an holiday so thought we would do the canal walk. 👍
@@ladsonthetrails yes it was nice to see it again as I was last there in 2019
The railway went under brandesholme road
The tunnel runs partly under Victoria Park. If you go into the park from the A6, turn immediately right. On that path there are filled in boreholes, only a few inches wide, from a few years ago when they injected concrete or something similar in to stabilise the tunnel.
Thank you for the information we will try and get down to have a look around 👍
Ŵow metrolink is coming to bradley fold 😢
@@JoshHodginsTrains well there is talks about it been around a while as was supposed to go to Bolton. Trouble with the old Bradley Fold line is most of the line has housing, so would be interesting to see how they could do the line.

Shithole
Its coming back
I think the local signalman was known as "Black Harry". There's loads of info online. After the collapse I understand that they filled the tunnel with colliery waste. I moved to Salford in 1959 when I was 10 and used to play at the southern end of the tunnel, there was a stream running out of it and we caught sticklebacks. The portal was filled so we couldn't get inside. Between the East Lancs Road and Patricroft was a desolate wasteland. I revisited the area in 2019, it's a nice walk from Patricroft to the East Lancs Road, the approach to the portal has been built up and grassed over, I couldn't find any evidence of the portal itself. I've put some photos on Flickr, but I can't post a link, my user name is rtbcomp and they're in an album called "Black Harry".
Thank you for the information we will have a look at the pictures thank you again
Get shovels out lads...
