Every day, Hachikō would accompany Ueno to Shibuya Station in Tokyo and wait for him to return from work in the evening. The Fateful Day On May 21, 1925, Professor Ueno suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at work and died suddenly. He never returned to the station where Hachikō waited. Despite this, Hachikō continued to go to Shibuya Station every day, waiting for his owner to return. This routine continued for nearly ten years. In 1932, one of Ueno's former students published articles about Hachikō's remarkable loyalty in a Tokyo newspaper. These articles brought national attention to Hachikō, and he became a symbol of loyalty and fidelity. Public Recognition In April 1934, a bronze statue of Hachikō was erected at Shibuya Station, with Hachikō himself present at the unveiling. The statue was melted down during World War II but was later replaced in 1948. The new statue, which stands to this day, has become one of Tokyo's most iconic landmarks and a popular meeting point. Hachikō's Death Hachikō passed away on March 8, 1935. He was found on a street in Shibuya, having succumbed to terminal cancer and a filaria infection.
