My Throwing Warm-Ups: 4

You should never pick up a ball, shot, stone, disc, hammer or whatever and try to throw 100%. You have got to start slow or you will get hurt over time. Take some at 30% some at 50, some at 70-75 before you attempt your first full effort throw.

This is the -minimum- way I work to open my hips on the field before I throw. If you have the time, space and energy there are lots of other great moves for your hips. This is what I do BEFORE and BETWEEN events. Highland Games meets and Track meets take a while…you warm up like 10 times through the day
Casting Huge Topwater Lures: it ain’t a 3point rainbow
Просмотров 148Год назад
You gotta learn how you side cast and lay these big lures in the water softly. Side cast, slow it down with your thump and raise the rod tip a little right before it hits. Think lay up, not a 3 from mid-court ya know. Take it easy at first, it’s a learning process.
ARBOGAST BUZZ PLUG: The odd-ball that works

This lure is a monster. Like otherArbogast lures floating line and stepping up the hook size with good hollow body frog hooks is always a solid plan. Like other giant topwateters the strikes can be thrilling and explosive so line and rod should be built for that. In the world of big crazy topwaters the BUZZ PLUG generates more strikes per cast and covers water faster than most. Right Lines folk...

Fungi Farming? Mushroom Hunting? What is a mushroom?
Convinced my nephew to grab the combo pack that has the green n black ones and a hula popper as a bonus. He thinks they're garbage bcuz we cant catch anything with them here in florida. Im wondering what the problem is because in san diego i used to CRUSH it with both these baits.
I bought 15 of those at a discount price and I love em, they bubble real nice!! Thanks for the extra tips!
Never caught shit on my jitter bug I'm tryin after you
Glad you were able to get passed down items! Love the videos and the information you hold!
So informative about top waters thank you!
You still making videos?? Your channel is dope! Just subscribed
Was the right-sized, black one you showed a 2.5" or 3" ? A valuable tutorial sir. 💎 Thank you. HD V-Vet 🇺🇸
What a great tip! I'll look for mine and get some frog hooks.
Black jitterbug at night or low light is about the best big fish bait I know of
you ever drill bubble holes in the blade? I used like a 4mm drill bit and put 3 holes across each side of one of my large ones and it leaves a great bubble trail. I haven't tried it at night yet
These are very noisy lures so work great when there's wind putting a good wave on the water. When it's calm they might be too noisy unless retrieved slow and gentle. My experience is best to treat these as swimmers that can be occasionally popped rather than a giant popper.
I agree! my first time with one was a small pond on a calm day. Sounds like you dropped a melon in the water every chug. They shine chunking them 30 yards across a windy flat with stumps. How do you get the best wobble when cranking?
Does anybody in mr pointers class know what the assignment is
I’ve used a Hula Popper for decades and still do .
what hooks do you eventually upgrade to? or do you sharpen regularly?
Cool idea! Gonna try that. Thanks for the video.
Less talking more fishing!
I have had requests for ASMR content that is the sound of fishing, casting, etc. Lotta folks find it calming. What do you think?
I'm just got one of these thanks for the info
What color did you go with
River monsters love em at night. Get good hits but loose them. Changed to treble hooks hoping to tag a muskie.
Dang! that would be an incredible sight! So I assume youre going with the large size and what, 50# braid? metal leader? how big did you go on the treble?
I just looked at a chrome bladed VMC treble, has a small willow leaf blade on it. Prolly doesnt come in a big enough size. The KVD Elite Triple Grip, with a strong split ring should fit the bill. What do you think?
MATZUO 1/0 hook, Steele leader, 14 lb. braid, spin reel. Health kept me away from river.this yr. Seems a tug/war with biggins, they turn and rip the hook out. Maybe need to play em
Have you played around with different hooks a little more over the year? I have just modified mine as per your video. I would like to see if I can find some thinner wire hooks for a little weight savings and maybe a little more natural presentation . I ended up with owner 1/0 round bend trebles hooks and cut one of the hooks off. The wire on these things are thick heavy duty wire and working with a spinning rod in medium action I think I would do a little better on hook set with a thinner wire hook. Something like the original hooks but in a bigger size.
I totally agree that a lighter wire = better hook up. I havent played around with it much. I moved, so I have had far less time on the water
I just subscribed to your channel I love those old school lure I have the old ones frome my uncle he left them to me I don't use them I have the new ones to I love this lure my favorite one love to you and yours frome fishing with paul@paulbohn1971
Keep it forever. With the new ones, what colors did you go with? I wish they made one amber metal flake
Jitterbug is my go to lure, i know they're not always hot but when they hit they cant be beat
I've been using this lure sense the late 1960's and my go to lure as well. Can't be beat 👍🎣
@@Robert-hr6sh what time of year do you have the most success with it? Late summer was rough for me this year! Any general tips for a young fisherman?
down here in Texas late summer means super high surface temps and often pretty low O2. I Fish these on the windy side of the lake if I can, and nearly dark to full blown night time. I like the dark moon, and a few days either side of a full moon. I swear things are strange in nature on a full moon
What size of EWG hook?
I use 2/0 and 3/0 frog hooks. I love Gamakatsu and Mustad. 3/0 is pretty much perfect on most of my lures
Is it really worth it? There are other topwater lures you don't have to make these modifications to. I've had good luck with the Rebel Pop-R and the Storm Chug Bug in ponds.
yeah, been a lot of cool lures made over the last century. Honestly they remind me of days gone by, like a classic car.
This is my favorite lure to use late in evening from about 5-8 pm i always get fish laye in evening with this lure
I have best luck in the evening, but I have day dreams of an all pearl, or maybe silver shad or something like that, that would work well late morning around standing timber in deeper water
I love this lure. I use the Jr. and its amazing for pike, musky and bass. Ive even caught walleye with it at the river.
next season Im going to go with a Red/White Jr with a heavier larger hollow body frog hook...the longer shank should act like a trailer hook and I plan on really covering water and moving that Jr pretty fast. More like a traditional buzz bait accept I can stop it or change speeds.
@@AdventureAllan23 Yea I really like it for that. I find when I bass fish with mine, im either getting bass in those few seconds after I cast and let it sit on the water, or whenever I stop my retrieve. When I cast it out over open water, I keep it running decently fast and that seems to trigger all the pike, tho I have had massive pike slam it right at the edge of my canoe when it comes to a stop, and I've had largemouth hit it when im fast retrieving a "bad cast."
Old school. I refurbished a couple of fly rod Hulla Poppers for smallmouth. Love those things.
I had a fly rod for a bit and enjoyed it. I would like to re-learn to fly fish out of a kayak and do exactly as you said
@@AdventureAllan23 it's a blast, especially for river Smallies.
Just found your channel and loving it. Is that the VMC frog hook on the back?
yep. with VMC you can typically get a little longer shank, longer shank frog hooks really pick up on those short strikes. It wont get em all, but usually I get one or two fish I wouldn't. Gamakgatsu are sharper I think
Love your videos, I’ve missed a lot of fish from the over the top casts. Will start practicing this side cast.
Good luck! I hope it feeds the topwater addiction
Appreciate this man. Just found a jitterbug hiding in my box and decided to try it this morning. Didn’t get nothing but I’ll definitely keep giving it a try.
To get more total strikes go with the medium size, add the larger sharper hooks, and never pause it. Fan cast and keep it gurgling at a medium retrieve. Never expect tons of strikes on these, expect serious strikes. If I wouldnt use one with a little kid or in a tournament, Id use it when little bass and tiny strikes just dont cut it
When do you use this lure? And what colors do you like?
Thanks Tim, the Baby Bass is probably the #1 color in Texas, start running it in mid-may till Aug. There is a chrome/black shad color. Run big red trebles on those and start chunking them anywhere you see schooling shad or running them past big trees
Just found your channel and after watching it, HAD to subscribe. Will try it for sure here in South Africa. Looking forward to more of your content. Tight lines!
Dude SA is on my traveling bucket list! If you are missing fish on these add another cut hook up front, sharpen the hooks and smash down the barbs.
Have you done this type of hook modification on a Jitterbug also?
Absolutely, but I run a pair of cut doubles, I often run a pair of cut doubles on Hula Poppers if im missing small fish, but you get killer splashing without that front hook. Im kinda day dreaming about trying a 3/0 Gamagatsu Frog Hook on one. Black/Blue/Black 3/0 frog hook over flooded grass and trees
I've noticed that you never show any casting, are you afraid to lose your lure. Why don't you ever show how they can actually catch a fish.
average viewing times are only a couple minutes so I try to spit as much practical info quickly. If I did a long live fish, or filmed all day cast for cast and edited it all down strike for strike it would be dope but I would need a much better set up, but if youd like to see that Ill try to get strikes on film
no I got no problem telling you I lose lures and so should you, if you're trying to get in tight to any sort of cover in shallow water you are gonna have some casualties LOL, Ill proudly tell you this aint my first 13
Awesome video buddy! New subscriber here! Love your channel! Quick question, I used a jitterbug for the first time yesterday. Third cast and a little bass busted this bait, which was 😎, but the lure didn’t seem to want to run right after that. Any thoughts on why that is? Everything looks like it did before I caught the fish. Thanks for your help
yeah they drift to one side sometimes which can make staying on a fan cast pattern, or working edges a challenge. Some things to try: 1) right where the eyelet attaches to the blade, make sure thats nice a loose and not binding up. 2) use floating line like a floating braid and keep your rod tip up, regardless of size the line being sunk bellow the blade will make your action wonky 3) you can use a pair of good needle nose and bend the blade edges (the far outside edge both left and right) at a 90, kinda boxing off the blade, only like 1/8th inch or like 4mm of blade on each side of a big bug. Sometimes that will tighten them up and get them running smooth, but ive only tried that on my biggest ones.
REally the main things to top that side-slide, put on a split ring and keep the rod tip above your waist.
Cool video! What type of line and rod for this specific lure
How big a rod I use is mostly determined by the type of bank Im fishing, or how much water I need to cover. I grew up throwing the large jitterbug on a 6' pistol grip fiberglass rod, and roll casting to keep the lure out of overhanging trees. Now Ill throw the big jitterbug on a 6.5-7' graphite rod with a good mono if there are sparse trees, or im fishing off the kayak. I use medium heavy rods with relatively quick tips when fishing topwaters. Big topwaters like these dont get tons of strikes they get a few big ones, so dont go with huge gear thats going to wear you out over the day. Im using P-line for my mono and PowerPro for my braid, though Im not happy with it and will probably find something else. I prefer lines that are clear, smoke, or green. I will only use red or green lines on my catfish set ups
what line you use can with antique lures is a bit of boondoggle sometimes. With Jitterbugs I use P-line mono, and a 7' berkley lightning rod. Im not even sure they still make those. You may want to use braid, which you can do with the large jitterbug model with cut hooks, you should NOT use braid with Devil's Horses, I have tons of lure fouling problems with those unless I remove the front prop. I should do a video on some other modified classics.
The rod completely depends on if Im fishing off the bank or out of the kayak. I fish 7' med-heavy most of the time in general but out of the kayak i use shorter rods (6-6.5) , just more practical for me. I like floating braid, but braid is expensive and kind of annoying if there is a lot of wind. When Im just fun fishing I throw green P-line mono and flouro. If im on Ray Roberts or Texoma then its going to be 20+ pound line. On these little ponds 15 tops.
Im working on The Devils Horse. The line fouling is an annoying problem. I THINK the key on those is going to be to go to a much heavier cut treble to deal with the body roll that causes a lot of the line fouling.
