What hotpot taught me about facing my fears
Hotpot. It’s fiery, chaotic, and absolutely delicious -- but before I ever tried it, it also intimidated me. The bubbling broth, the endless ingredients, the sauce bar...it all felt overwhelming. For years, I avoided it, convinced I’d mess it up or not enjoy the experience.
But then I decided to face my fear, dive in, and try hotpot for the first time. What I discovered was an incredible meal, but also a lesson in curiosity, courage, and stepping out of my comfort zone.
Join me as I share my journey from apprehension to obsession, explore the flavors and traditions of hotpot, and reflect on how it’s taught me to embrace new challenges. Whether you’re a hotpot enthusiast or a total newbie li...

    This video makes it sound like canned fish is some inherently Iberian thing uniquely imbued with Iberian cultural heritage, when it's a very common food in many parts of the world where fish and canning facilities exist. It doesn't even originate in Iberia. I wouldn't use implication-heavy words like "gentrification" to mythologize canned fish consumption into something greater than it is.

    One could argue NY pizza is a “gentrified” version of Italian heritage/food, devaluing the historical significance of the dish. But I would argue that this phenomenon is just he byproduct of a multicultural, diverse society. This cultural melting pot is something we should embrace. Of course, we should encourage people to learn more about the history of products they consume; however, we should not shame people for not having the time to do so on every product they use. In commercialized countries, we consume such a diversity of products that having a deep understanding of the historical significance of each would take several lifetimes.

      @@vinnyeatworld Thank you for the great video! Your video made me think, and you did a great job introducing your culture to me! I was in Portugal last year and walked past a canned fish store, thinking nothing of it. I just assumed the store sold sardines (which I do not like). Now I know better and will try the octopus and other fish next time I see a store selling them. Maybe I find out I do not like any type of canned fish (which I have a feeling is likely), but I have a greater appreciation for the culture that these products come from and am excited to learn more about the Portuguese culture with my own eyes, nose, and tongue. Your video acts as a bridge between my experience on the Iberian peninsula, the broader cultural context, and the canned product itself. Thanks again!

      @vinnyeatworld Год назад

      @@CraftingHock To hear that the video made you think really means a lot and makes the effort behind it worth it! Just for some clarification, although I recently learned that I do have Portuguese ancestry from a DNA test, I don't actually identify as Portuguese. All my life I've identified as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Scottish, Irish, and German - basically just an American mix. But I think, perhaps, it's this mixture of cultural backgrounds growing up that have made me particularly attuned to and interested in questions of cultural identity and how they relate to history. Thanks again for the kind words.

    Perhaps the canned fish and what not is purely to prevent things such as Alzheimer's and the education around those tinned goods has improved as many know the benefits now instead of it just being "canned fish" Gentrification shouldn't relate to a certain color of people eating canned fish because you think it's gentrification, maybe if I wasn't able to find sardines at Walmart for still 0.98 cents there would be gentrification. But what you're pertaining to is specific videos of people eating 130$ canned fish from Patagonia which is outrageous to anyone who doesn't want to spend 130$ on canned fish. Does Patagonia selling $130 canned fish equal gentrification, does Amazon selling the same type of fish assortment for $60 equal gentrification? The same way gas prices rise when the demand is high, how could one not expect with a surplus in canned fish buyers and not enough fish in the sea to provide for the demand..Seems just a bit of a reach to say canned fish is gentrified.

    • @vinnyeatworld
      @vinnyeatworld Год назад

      I would agree, it definitely is a reach to say that point blank - the question is more to promote discussion, and I thank you for contributing your perspective on it!
