I was a medic at the 85th EVAC in 71 and in 72 I stayed in Phu Bai after the 101st stood down. I was then with the 142 Med Detachment.

I was a medic there in 1971 & 1972. Welcome Home Brother's & Sister's.

I remember Dr Grossman as well. One of his patients was a black guy who thought he was so cool that he gave him a bracelet made of black boot laces that all the black troops were wearing. The story went that the hospital commander ordered him to take it off but whenever I saw him he always had it on. He didn't wear a hat either which added to his rebel mystique. He was a good man.

I knew Cpt Brockschmidt and played softball with him after hours. I still remember him wearing a boonie hat, shorts and no shirt. A funny thing happened after I got back. I was working in an operating room in Athens Ga and the husband of one of the nurses asked me who I had known in Viet Nam. I mentioned several names and then said 'Captain Brockschmidt'.. And he said "Oh, you knew Fred!' Which floored me because here I was in Athens Georgia speaking with a man from Illinois about another man from Illinois whom I had known half a world away! I have had several encounters like this but it makes quits an impact when you are young. What a world and what a life!

Hey Przygoda! I know you! This is Grafton Hale and I was transferred from the 67th in 1970 to Phubai. I was one of 2 Orthopedic Technicians or 'cast men' the other one was Joseph Manikowski from Minnesota. That Christmas you introduced me to the concept of the Hanukkah Bush which, as an Episcopalian from Georgia, I had never heard of. The Leo you referred to is Dr. Leo Flynn from Florida and Warren was Dr. Warren Sorensen from California. The red head on the right in 1:49 I'm pretty sure is Sp/4 Ron Ziglemyer from the upper midwest I've forgotten exactly where. At 3:03, the young man at left may be my buddy Joe Manikowski but I can't be sure. It was a lifetime ago. But I will never forget being a 20 year old and the people I met back then. If anyone else has video, pictures or memories of the 85th at Phubai, please post them. I have a lot of pictures that I will upload--as soon as this now 72 year old geezer learns how to! I forgot how young we were. In 2021 it will be 50 years for me. Doc Hutch, 85th Evac & 142nd Med/Surg detachment. Phu Bai 71-72. We were Figments.

Having met you, I know how driven you are.
