Welcome to my RUclips channel! My name is Jake and I am a penman and an avid fountain pen collector. This page is dedicated to reviewing all things related to fountain pens and writing and I am happy to be able to share my collection of pens and my opinions of the writing arts with you. My goal is to create both long and short video reviews for all of my pens. The short videos will be a nice introduction to the pen being talked about, but it won't go into too much depth. The long video reviews will talk about all aspect of the pen so that if you are considering buying it, you'll hopefully have all of the information you need! Please feel free to write comments and let me know what your opinion on the pen, your opinion on the video, and let me know what other pens you would like me to review! Thanks for stopping by, and feel free to subscribe to my channel for updates on all my new uploads!
Spencerian Part 1: Guide Sheet & Supplies
Well, I'm finally starting my Spencerian script tutorials! This is actually something that I have been hoping to do for a while, and look forward to creating this series. This video is part 1 of many (to come), and discusses the very basic most supplies needed for Spencerian writing. In addition, I address how to make a guide 52 degree guide sheet, which is essential for the practicing penman. Once you watch this video, get your supplies ready, and make your guide sheet, make sure to check out part 2 of the series! As always, let me know if you have any suggestions to make things better!

I wanted to make a video that showed some really cool products that I have accumulated and to dive into my stationary drawer. Hopefully I can make some more dedicated videos in the future for the products I really love. Here's a list of my favorite brands for calligraphy and writing: Paper: Midori, Life Pens: Pilot Justus, Platinum Century 3776, Pilot Parallel (Calligraphy) Journaling: Midori 3...
Spencerian FA Nib In Action
Просмотров 6 тыс.5 лет назад
Here is an up-close video of the Spencerian regrind FA nib on the Pilot Custom 912. I also compare it to the Leonardt EF Principle nib. The nib was ground by John Mottishaw at Classic Fountain pens and I absolutely love it. Hope you enjoy this video!

For a close-up writing sample, check out my other video: ruclips.net/video/VYPzwO3qXTE/видео.html Hey everyone! After a long hiatus, I had to share this new pen. Sorry for the long video, but I noticed that there weren't many reviews out there for the Spencerian re-grind Falcon nibs so I had to post one! This pen was ground by John Mottishaw over at Classic Fountain Pens and it is truly a wonde...
Sailor ProGear Imperial Black
Просмотров 19 тыс.8 лет назад
This is my review for the Sailor Professional Gear in Imperial Black (Fine Nib). It is definitely a smaller pen, but it is both beautiful and a pleasure to write with. The Imperial Black's body comes in a matte black, and all of it's accents are also coated in black. Furthermore, the nib is a 21K ion plated gold (black) nib that gives a decent amount of feedback as well as ink flow. Overall, I ...
Visconti Homo Sapiens

Here is a review of the coveted Visconti Homo Sapiens (EF Nib)! It is made of volcanic ash that is slightly porous and is capable of absorbing water to a certain extent. It is a hefty pen at 45g and quite large as well. Overall, it has a very smooth nib that lays down generous amount of ink - sometimes so much so that it bleeds through the paper. While I do enjoy this pen, I think overall I wou...
Nakaya Naka Ai Toki Tamenuri

Here is a review of my Nakaya Naka-ai in the color Toki-Tamenuri (EF Nib). I am pretty blown away by the quality of this pen and the nib. I don't think I've ever had an EF nib this smooth that lays down such a fine line (0.2mm). This has to be one of my favorite pens that I own and I give it 11/10 (Yep, it's that amazing!)
Pilot Justus 95 Review
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.8 лет назад
I'm very excited to review my favorite pen of all time, the Pilot Justus 95 (Fine Nib)! This is an adjustable size 10 nib in 14K gold and it is, by far, the best nib that I have ever used. This pen gets a perfect 10/10 in my book, and I hope you enjoy the review. Check out my Quick Review of the Justus as well!
Pilot Custom 845 Quick Review
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.8 лет назад
Here is my Pilot Custom 845 (Fine Nib) quick review. If this pen is on your short list, feel free to take a look at my longer, more in depth review. Overall, I think this is a great pen and give it a solid 9/10. Thanks for watching!
Pilot Custom 845
Просмотров 7 тыс.8 лет назад
This is a review of my new Pilot Custom 845 (Fine Nib). It comes with a beautiful coat of urushi on the body and the cap of the pen as well as a size 15 nib. This pen is a fine nib, and it writes beautifully. Overall, I give it a 9/10.
Remember this, practice, practice and practice. When in doubt practice more. BTW, congratulations on shortly becoming a Medical Doctor. Pax
Can it also be suited to writing "expressively", but faster, and does it have a good snap-back similar to a vintage flex nib?
Very helpful review. As a consequence of it being a needlepoint does it feel scratchy or is there still enough of the tipping left after the regrind to let it go over the paper smoothly? Thanks!
Congratulations! You will be one of the few docs with beautiful and legible handwriting!!!
Love this pen. I have it in Medium. I’m sure you know by now since this is an old video. The inside lip of the cap is lined with felt so you won’t scratch the pen body if you decide to post. Great review.
Beautiful writing :)
Helpful review. Is that F nib? or M nib?
This pen costs $600aud delivered right now...
I was thinking of getting an ebonite Fountain Pen Revolution Himalaya 2 with the ultra flex nib and grinding it to a finer point 🤔
I have a himalaya, I’d recommend you give it a shot. Although mine writes so well as is I don’t know if I’d want to modify it.
@@archetypalculinarian 👀 I may have picked one up when they had a sale the other day and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival.
How can you be a doctor when your handwriting is legible ? (Congratulations by the way!)
Great review man. Can you please tell me the name of site from where you got the pen. Thanks
Nice to see you. I have a same pen.
How do you like the nib?
I wonder why you would want to do that to a perfectly wonderful nib.
Great inspiration for me! I noticed that you are wearing a Cal hoodie. Are you an alumni of UC Berkeley? I’m currently studying biochem and preparing for MCAT here. And, I love fountain pens!!
How would you say the scratchiness here compares to something like a platinum uef nib? I'm thinking about a nakaya and already have a uef on my 3776 and was wondering if I should spring for the spencerien on my Grail pen given no issues with the feedback level on a uef. Thanks in advance doc!
Hey Reed! John Mottishaw ground the Spencerian nib very well...it is not scratchy at all. I’d say it is slightly bigger than my 3776 UEF nib, but just barely. However, it is a lot smoother. Also, on my 3776 I have had trouble with the feed in the past, especially when I stop writing for more than 5-10 sec. this nib doesn’t have that issue whatsoever. You’ll definitely like this nib, I sure do!
@@jacobleroux4703 I have the exact same issue whenever I use noodlers Ink, not very noticeable with diamine or iroshizukus. Thanks for the reply, I'll most likely be getting the spencerien now, still given that I mostly use fountain pens for art and my handwriting is abysmal 😂
Congratulations Dr Jacob!
Thank you so much!!! And thanks for watching!
Next time when you do the video, please zoom the camera so that we can have a better view. Check videos by Gourmet pens for better clarity.
Now those are some *very* fine lines. Also congratulations, Doc! Very glad I have notifications on
Beautiful pen, and you have magnificent handwriting. I want this in red color so badly.
Pls introduce the Japanese local reseller. Tnx
Glad you appreciate japanese pens. They are real quality. Beautiful piece!
Thanks for making this very detailed review. I appreciate your being so thorough... This will be my next pen! I have EF and FA nibs from a 743 that I can swap with, too. Should be fun!
As the "flagship" of the Pilot line I was surprised to find that the 845 isn't reviewed more. I'm a big fan of Pilot and will certainly buy one. I've the Justus 95 and find it the least favorite of my Pilots (the nib, at least on mine, isn't up their usual standards and I find no discernable difference between the "soft" and "hard" setting), but even with my smaller hand I'll not let the size of the 845 deter me from giving it a go. As I've often said, what Pilot pens may lack in visual appeal they more than make up in writing performance. Next to OMAS nibs they are the best that I've found. Thanks for your thorough review, Jacob. I look forward to more.
Hi Jacob. Great video review. Love Nakaya pens. Subscribed. Thanks. Tim
Well I was going to get one... I've watched other reviews, one said it was like a fire hose and he got Mike M to fix it, another said he didnt like there being no ink window. You though have highlighted the hydrophilic effect of the material which I didnt know was so bad. What a pain in the Aristotle, I really wanted one of these. Now I've changed my mind but I'm really glad you showed this because I'm not drowning in money and to have paid so much to find this out would have driven a spike right up the arsenal rovers. Liked the presentation you gave and the easy to listen to voice you have, I hope you can do more. Thank you for sharing in the madness. Best wishes. LeZc @@
Hey Lez! Yeah, the pen looks really amazing and I think that it is a wonderful concept, but overall there are some issues that I personally don't like in a 500 dollar pen! If you decide on another pen, you must let me know! I'd love to hear your feedback!
Beautiful pen and inspiring review! I have a kuro-tamenuri decapod twist with a stub nib waiting for me back home that I haven't even opened yet (currently traveling), and now I want an EF nib Nakaya too. Assuming I love the Decapod, a Naka-ai in aka-tamenuri may be in my future.
Well thanks for watching! I would love to hear what you think about the decapod - that is definitely a beautiful pen and when my finances allow it I will probably get one myself!!!
Great review! Beautiful pen.
Great review Jacob, the pen writes very similar to Platinum 3776 Century Fine! Could you tell us what ink were you using in that video? I myself am looking for a good black ink. Greetings from the UK, great job!
Hey David, all of my videos use the Iroshizuku in Take-Sumi. I have found that it is the best black ink that I can find. Very smooth flow with great saturation. I tried out at least 10 black inks before I found one that I liked! The Take-Sumi is especially good in super fine nib pens, I found that others would clog them up sometimes! I hope that helps!
Thanks for the informative video. I wasn't aware that there were two lines of Rhodia. Is the premium marketed as Rhodia Premium or something else please
Rev- No problem! Yes, this is the premium line of Rhodia, it is 90g/m2 rather than 80g/m2 and it has a very soft finish to both the paper as well as the cover. It is very similar to the Clairfontaine paper, which I also love. By far, this is my favorite paper though! It is called the Rhodia 1934 collection and comes in a few sizes =] Hope you like it if you choose to buy it!
I just found your channel here on YT and I find your videos very informative, thank you!
Hey David! Thanks so much! I am glad that you like my channel! I should be posting another video later this week! Feel free to subscribe =]
Already subscribed! one thing I forgot to mention is the fact that it would be very helpful if you could mention the nib size somewhere in the description of your videos or in a writing sample. I don't know about other people but I often find them very helpful when I'm doubt which nib size should I order. Really appreciate your effort!
Thanks so much for the suggestion, I'll make sure to do that!
He did mention in the video it's a Pilot #15 size nib, F (fine). But maybe you just meant ALSO in the description/writing sample.
Thanks for this review. I've considered the 845 for about a year now and can't make my mind up about buying it, whether the Urushi is worth the premium over my 823 which I use on a daily basis. I'm sure it is, and I'm sure I'll get seduced by the red version of this pen someday. Also, most pen reviewers out there use medium or broad nibs...it's refreshing to see the F and EF nibs get some attention, for those of us that enjoy them more than the wider, more popular sizes.
Thanks so much for watching my video! Yeah, since the 823 and the 845 both come with the size 15 nib, it's definitely a toss up. They are coming out with an even larger version of the 845 that has a size 30 nib, though it is supposed to retain for around $800. I will say that the Urusei is absolutely stunning and really is a pleasure. Have you considered looking into a Nakaya? They are a little more expensive than the 845, but at least that way you can diversify your collection and still get some urushi! They also have incredibly fine nibs! Check out my review for the Nakaya, I think you'll like them!
Hi Jacob, thanks for your great review. I own a Piccolo and totally agree with everything you said. Love your handwriting too :-)
Excellent points about the ink being absorbed into the section, the lack of the ink-window and the overly generous ink flow. I just checked mine and picked up some ink with a wet paper towel despite having inked this 3 days ago!
Yeah, that ink absorption is something that really bothers me. Make sure to check your cap too...I bet there is a bunch in there too! Thanks for watching the video, and thanks for your feedback! While it definitely does have some drawbacks, I still do enjoy the Homo Sapiens. However, my pen may find it's way to a nibmeister sooner rather than later!
I've been waiting for mine for a few months, it's coming! I ordered from Nakaya Japan, along with some accessories.
You're gonna love it! What pen did you get? The Naka-ai? And in what color?
Jacob Leroux I got the decapod writer in Aka-tamenuri and the Neostandard in Heidi-tamenuri.
Great video!! I have a quick question: I have reached an academic milestone, and plan to "treat" myself with a new EDC pen. I am torn between the Justus 95 and the Custom 845 pen. I know you have reviewed both; which would you recommend? Would you still choose the Justus first? As a note, my favourite all-time pen is the Custom 823 fine. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Steve! Congratulations on your academic milestone, I know how exciting it is to reach those! Honestly, if I had to choose between the two pens, I would likely choose the Justus 95 in a Fine. Given that you already have an Custom 823, I am not sure that getting an 845 would be much more exciting. Also, the bodies of the Justus and the 845 are very similar (though the justus doesn't have urushi), but the justus has the adjustable nib. For an EDC, I think the justus is the best choice because you don't always have to be concerned about ruining the urushi as well. With that being said, both of them are VERY nice pens! However, the Justus has always been my favorite pen! Congrats again, and let me know which pen you end up getting...either way, you won't be disappointed!
Hey, another great review! Do you own a 823? It's one of my fav Pilot pen, vacuum filler, high ink capacity.
Hey Max, thanks so much for your comment! Unfortunately I do not have the 823. It is, however, on my short list and I hope to get it within the next 6 months or so. When I do, I will make sure to do a review! I have the Pilot 742 though and I will be reviewing that within the next week or so!
Jacob Leroux I have a 743, it's kinda similar to 742. Any other brand you like other than Pilot?
Yeah, I do have some other pen brands that I will be reviewing! Pilot is definitely my favorite brand though. I will be reviewing some Sailor, Lamy, Nakaya, Visconti, and Wahl pens in the near future!
Btw, did you flip your video horizontally?
Yes, I did flip it horizontally haha. I realized maybe I shouldn't so that the words read correctly
Hi Jacob, I really enjoy your comprehensive review. This is the one pen I've been wanting to get for a long time, and I finally placed an order after watching your video. Hope to see more videos on your channel. Oh, my poor wallet.
Yeah, trust me, I know how you feel! I am sure that my credit card company loves my pen habit. I am glad that you liked the review!
