I ran a 5K a day for 30 days

For 30 days, Matt set himself a challenge of running 5K every day. Starting from very little running background (1 rubbish 5K in the last 2 years), and a general dislike for running overall, where can we get to over 30 days? Can a love of running be found? How fast can we actually go? Will 30 days be enough to show progression? Will Matt even complete the 150km of running required? If you want ...

ooh 3.12 - drone almost hit the tree?! enjoying your video, will get through them all this morning while off with covid..! i got sent a wayfarer to review too. looking forward to it!
I just won an ebay auction for this ship. Holy crap 😜 that box is huge
Amazing!! I'm off to NYC in Feb, this has me buzzing now! Thanks Matt! 👌
Wow! You certainly crammed a lot of activity into a few days. Glad that you had an excellent time. Lovely montage
Looks brilliant!!
Could you please breakdown all costs of your trip in a second video? Thanks in advance
Fun fact these were all filmed on the same day
Pity you had to bail but safety first better that than under a car when the brakes fail
Loving the trip so far mate well done 🚴🏼♂️👍🏻
Well done mate 🚴👍🏻
Have you considered doing this trip again using the Eskute Voyager Pro? The Pro has the Hydraulic brakes needed, mid mounted motor with a torque sensor, better larger capacity battery for better range and a Samsung brand. I also believe the tyres are better. The bike has a £1550 price point so not the 3K mentioned. Its the bike i am considering.
The Pro model must be fairly recent, as it didn't exist when I did the ride. It certainly looks like it would deal with the challenges I had much better. Mid-motor would be better for the steeper hills, extra gears would be useful and the brakes being better would make a huge difference for the load I was carrying. It would be something I'd be happy to complete the second half of the trip on.
@@futureproofliving you should contact the marketing department and share your videos with them. Tell them you would like to try the challenge with the pro.
i forgot to say i did just add £5 to your charity and i hope you raise more so well done for getting me to part with my pennies
Thank you so much for making a donation!
great end to a tough challenge and im sure it was the best review i saw about this particular bike and many people have a clear picture of how it would work for them. Hope you get the chance to try it again on another electric bike that makes the journey easier . I was looking at buying one of these but my journey has some hefty hills and im not looking for a workout as i already train 5 days a week so for now i will stick with the train or my motorbike but will be watching out for your next adventure
Take my hat off to you friend
You have my admiration for attempting the trip in the first place. In my early teens, nearly 60 years ago, and on a bike with 5 gears, I used to cycle between 60 and 100 miles on a sunday with the CTC. But not of course with the sort of load you were carrying. Several days recovery were needed! I now have a cheapish e bike but with hydraulic discs and would love to make longer trips. But the spare battery cost is about £350 and it weighs a lot, so each battery would have to work harder. I used to live in the Peak District and cycled thousands of miles there. If you had asked me, I could have told you what the sometimes horrendous hills are like, even on an ordinary bike. But I agree they would be no problem at all to even a mid range electric and you don't need to spend anything like £3000. I hope you try again, and please post it if you do.
Foliage is a huge issue. This year it is worse than I have ever seen it. On narrow roads if I have to stop for an oncoming vehicle, it is often in the stinging nettles. My sympathies. Not good. I haven't noticed on my e bike-a Carrera crossfire, that the battery is not performing well at lower charges, except when it gets to 10% when you can definitely feel loss of power. So not all e bikes are the same. Battery: I have a lower wattage battery at 417 than you but I can get 60 miles out of one charge by cycling always at the lowest assistance setting or, on the flat or downhill, with power switched off AND not pushing it but cycling as if you were on your ordinary bike.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was gonna get one of these bikes but i doubt it now
Look at the Escute Voyager PRO, it has everything this guy mentioned he needed. Its the one i might look at, the price is around £1550 so no the 3K he mentioned. It has Hydraulic brakes, mid mounted motor, larger branded samsung battery and better tyres. Also display is bigger and brighter.
Omg how🧐🤨😕 but I love it🤗😍
Donation made - hope you make it mate! (only watched part one but I live in hope).
Of course it's all up hill, you're going North. 😁
I just Ordered this bike thru Amazon. What I gather right now is at least 3 batteries and a second charger might have help, But that 180 euro per battery Ouch! And I am just starting to follow your trip. I am 70 and do not want to rely only on my peddling But really doubt I would try such a great trip at my age, or at least not try 100 miles per day. Thank you for this adventure.
A quick update, I have received a reply in less than 6 hours after placing my order, that my bike has shipped, and also found a good local bike shop that said they will put hydraulics breaks on my new bike for me.
how many miles do you get on one full charge? mine only does 20 max on flat
I got around 35 miles from a charge, assuming I was cycling with assistance uphill, nothing downhill and occasional on flats. Basically, I tried to keep my overall speed at around 12mph plus, so whatever I needed to achieve that was where I put the assistance. Also, this was with the extra luggage and weight. You might find that it takes a few charges for the battery to normalise.
Where did you get the rack from?
The rack is from a local hardware store. Just a simple garage storage shelf. Ours is from B&Q and is one which has a high weight capacity, but then we've only use half of the height possible for it. Also, the weight capacity is optimistic with the wood they provide for the shelves, so I purchased some additional layers of wood so it's 3 times thicker than as it's purchased, and this holds all of the weight no problem
Really enjoyed those videos of your challenge. You really gave it a decent go. Obviously not the right bike for that sort of terrain. You did incredibly well considering the weight you carried and the limitations of the bike. Our Cube reaction E-mountain bikes cost around the £2000 mark each and would have eaten up those rocky bridleways. Bosch mid drive motor, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes but also 2.6 inch wide tyres to absorb those rocks. Batteries are bigger also at 500wh and charge in about 4 hours. Hopefully an e-mountain bike manufacturer will see your videos and sponsor a 2nd attempt on a more capable bike 👍🏼 Keep up the good work. Very inspirational.
Sorry to hear you couldn't complete the journey but it was an interesting challenge to take on and I hope you give it another go sometime. You defo did the right thing though. I really enjoy riding my Eskute (Voyager) but the brakes are definitely the weak point. Can I ask, where did you carry the spare battery - did it fit ok on the pannier rack? Cheers 👍
The spare battery fit fine on the pannier rack. I did a few things to make it work well though. I made a cover for a spare battery. Just some childrens leggings cut down to go around the carried batter to try to protect from scratches. I'd love a better solution that's maybe neoprene, but anything is good. I used a strap to hold the battery down. I used a bungee cord around the seat and then around the end of the battery to make sure it didn't slide backwards. Of course, I had a luggage bag sitting on top of it also to help keep it secure. I think to carry a spare battery, you just need to work out how best to keep it secure for your own journeys
@@futureproofliving Cheers for the detailed info. I've just added a pannier to my Voyager and got a spare battery on order (along with loads of bungee cord!), although I've tried the existing battery on the rack and it's quite a lump! Good call about wrapping it and securing it from flying off the back. Am looking forward to longer journeys with the extended range - hopefully the Trans Penine coast to coast in a couple of months.
im fitting hydraulic breaks to mine. sorry to hear you didn't complete it.
Eskute has shameful customer service, please please I beg you 🙏🏽 avoid them. They will take your order and then will say they car give you a date on when you will get the bike
With everything that's gone on in Europe,it is kind of hard to give a date right?
Im glad i didnt get one now. Customer service is a priority for me.
@@jamiewales9810 Stock is now held in Leicester, England. But like others i have emailed a few questions and customer service has been terrible.
Great effort, Matt. Can't blame you for stopping given your braking issues. Hydraulic brakes would clearly be a worthy upgrade for the bike if big hills feature in your local riding. It would still work out as good value overall I reckon. Random question, did you suffer any punctures on your route? That's my biggest concern given the extra complexities of rear hub motor wheel!! Well done again, I'll keep following your ventures.
No punctures at all actually. The tyres I think have some puncture resistance built in. I really thought the gravel tracks and random sharp rocks might cause me a problem, but the bike did great with everything thrown at it overall. Just a shame the brakes couldn’t be trusted overall and ultimately made country lane downhills pretty scary. The most fun pet of cycling is downhill, so when you’ve got to do those at jogging pace to feel safe, it’s not ideal.
Well done - sorry that you couldn’t complete the trip. I’ve got a wayfarer and the brakes are definitely one of the weak points of the bike and especially so if it’s fully laden like yours was. I also find the power system to be an issue. I often find at set off there is no power assist but after a few seconds it seems to wake up and become active. The battery status also varies widely under load!
Sorry to hear you couldn't finish the full trip, but the right decision non-the less. Just your little issue with the breaks you mention at 5 mins in being hydraulic powered. I would recommend a Tern GSD with the two battery option for a larger trip like this. Comfy with a large range on the power. Comfortably 130 miles between the two. If you were ever to attempt this again, maybe a local dealer would lend you one for the duration of the trip in exchange for some promotion?
I’d love to try a different bike to finish the trip. I’ve got unfinished business for sure
Why do you think you had the brakes issue? Do you think this will occur on all Eskutes? And how easy would it be to fix permanently and how much would it cost roughly?
I don’t think it’s an issue overall. Just a brake system that would ideally be upgraded on a bicycle with power. I could make it better myself for maybe £20. A full replacement system would be future proof and would cost £120. Still the total cost of bike and fully replaced brakes would make a for a good priced ebike
@@futureproofliving thanks buddy
Really enjoying your journey, warts and all, appreciate your honesty in challenges you encountered. Particularly interested as I ordered an Eskute bike in June - the Voyager mountain bike initially but changed to your Wayfarer road bike due to the MTB being thoroughly out of stock!! Still waiting for delivery but excited for my first electric bike experience. Do you find the Wayfarer easy to ride without powered assistance, or is it a bit of a slog due to the weight? This may be a reason for me to purchase a second battery, we'll see!! Keep going Matt, all for a good cause, I'll make a donation. Thanks, Rich.
It’s a heavy bike without power, but actually the spare battery and my luggage including camera gear added a lot of weight to the total. A mild uphill without power is find without power if you use the gears properly.
Please please do not buy from Eskute. They took my money for a bike and I still have not got it, its been almost 1 month. They make silly excuses for the reason of the delays and keep messing me around. Save yourself so much hassle and AVOID!!
I got mine.
Thank You for the heads up, so I placed my order thru Amazon and have already been informed the bike has shipped. I still need to wait a week or 2 for the bike to arrive. I am glad I read your comment.
I did see another RUclipsr who said his had taken 6 weeks to come.
I ordered my Voyager and it arrived in about a week. It's the international freight problems causing this so maybe don't be too hard on the manufacturers I think.
I got mine in 3 days.I think maybe they were waiting for a shipment earlier in the year. Maybe they were stuck in the Suez Canal 😬
Keep up the great work 🤛🏼
Good job for keeping it up. Doing 30 continuous days is a tough start. It sounds like you'd really benefit from parkrun (free weekly timed event), returns in July in Scotland. Running with people can help, the community is so nice, and you can race yourself each week. It's family friendly for the kids as well. It's been a gateway to running for many in my club!
Kampret
good!
I just finished my 100 day push up challenge and got great results. Keep it up!
Really I just started to do 100 puch ups and 100 sit ups im on day 2 rn
Would you recommend it? looks like a good mix bikes, great video
It was an excellent trip. Well run and very enjoyable. A range of riding abilities and different bikes, so it was a nice mix, and everyone can find a place they fit in the convoy of bikes.
Very creative movie! Looks brilliant 👍🏻
Great views. Great footage.
