I am afraid of guns so I am not doing the gun thing unless I want to, so if I were the official starter, I would, for safety reasons, do this with my starter's gun.... 1. On the signal, "Take your marks", I would keep the gun downrange. 2. On the signal, "Set....", I will raise my gun uprange, finger off the trigger but ready to get that finger on the trigger. I would have the gun in the air with both hands for stability because the bang of the gun will set off a kick. Fortunately, starter's guns fire blanks, so this is not like New Year's Eve. If the gun shoots uprange, because there is no real bullet, no worry about bullets raining down 10 seconds later to kill off a racer if the bullet hits the head. 3. The "Go!" signal, of course, is the actual time I would fire the gun, which means the start of the race. But I need to be careful on timing of the word 'Set" and the time I set off the banging discharge of the gun. From watching all of the track races in the Olympics, the typical protocol is 3 seconds between "Set" and the "Bang!". It is called the "3-second set-to-bang rule" for starter pistol shooters. My two bits. If I see a false start before the first "bang", I do a "car backfire" bang - that is, an additional shot (2nd shot) to tell the racers that a false start happened, which nullifies the race. 2nd shot is also uprange, and then I can get the gun downrange. Because of the risk of false starts, I would put 2 caps of ammunition in that gun. Always! For each race. So if I have to fire the second shot, I can do that!
