After activating Wonder Guard, the game "remembers" the ability, hence the second attack will always be a super-effective one.

At the start I would have saved poison powder bought the magikarp and then used poison powder on metapods and switch trained both pokemon all the way until I was out of poison powder PP so i was hopefully overleveled
