Japan's New Gambling Controversy - How Yokohama Fought To Block a Casino
Despite the numerous gambling venues in Japan, opening a casino has proved to be a controversial subject.
Yokohama was one of the cities that joined the bid to host an IR-facility (integrated resorts) with a casino being the Cash cow to bring much needed new revenue into the city.
Where did the idea come from to host a casino, and why did it face a fierce resistance from its citizens?
All this and more answered in the video.

      @@economicsinjapan8076 I'm currently on a student visa in Japan, and recently got a startup visa in Tokyo. @@strauss7151 Congratz on your startup visa. I have been able to put up with the Japanese bureaucracy because I speak the language but I would assume it to be a nightmare for somebody trying to get by with english as people and systems here really don't understand english. High taxes was already a thing in my home country Finland so I didn't think about it too much, although Singapore would probably be way better in that aspect.

    Thank you for a comprehensive and fascinating exploration into the world of entrepreneurial visas in japan. This is something I have been looking into since 2015 as I wish to be able to enjoy my retirement in a country where I can be free from harassment. The cost of living in my country is too high and it is a banana republic. So I was looking at moving my amplifier repair business to japan. I visited in 2017 and spent some time with a prominent Japanese loudspeaker Restoration company in Nagahara japan. After 4 hours of discussing the business climate in Japan we both agreed that I should manufacture custom vacuum tube amplifiers and sell them. Now the problem is a lack of capital for me. I do have a house in the United States but I also am in a situation of owing a lot of back property tax. So my equity in the house may be reduced considerably. And then there's all the stress and uncertainty and being elderly this may be difficult to handle at my advanced age. But the stress of not leaving my country May soon become too great.

I think it is easier to start a buisness in The U.S and then open up a branch office in Japan and get an intra company transferee visa. Or simply save up 300k and coast indefenitely getting renewals for designated activities long stay. with the occasional going back home to make some money.

    What was your Japanese level when you applied? I am currently a language student in Tokyo but I am leaving my language school to go back home(its a pretty shit school is the reason). Thinking of spending a year going through with the process of this but it seems difficult haha! My chances seem pretty low, checked Kobe University acceptance for foreigners since I am pretty interested in this uni and they accepted 1/17 foreigners for the Engineering school(2021), and 0/2 for business(2021)!!! Than again, maybe most of the applicants were just not readily prepared. I suppose my plan right now is to find 1 or 2 colleges that have similar EJU reqs, study the year for that and apply. What were the main Universities you considered when choosing Yokohama uni? Edit: Regarding the entrance rate info I showed above ^^. I pulled that data from the English pages of the website but after navigating to the Japanese acceptance info page I have found that the overall acceptance rate it MUCH higher than that under the section labeled 特別選抜 which I assume includes foreigners. Not sure which page to trust now haha xD.

      My Japanese at the time was somewhere around JLPT N2 or close to N1. The main candidates were the Yokohama National University, Hitotsubashi University and YCU. Yeah, like you said, usually the Japanese version of the page has all the info compared to the English where its only a fraction of that. Good luck with your journey!

    My 2 cents as a JP Postbank user. I've had JP Post bank for close to 6 years now and when I first started in Japan, they were definitely the go-to bank for foreigners. No phone number needed to set-up, so it was great if you just got here. However, over time their fees have gotten higher and higher and not being able to withdraw after 5pm became very grating on my nerves after the first year. That means no using an ATM Mon- Fri if you have a job. No withdrawals after business hours means no ATM use on Sunday either because a lot of them are closed, and fees for using it on Saturday. There are a lot of JP ATMs but they count the ATMs in convenience stores in that list and those carry a 2-300 yen fee these days. I don't know about the other banks, but JP Post requires foreigners to fill out paperwork every year stating you aren't a money launderer, or the account gets frozen and you cannot withdraw money from the account until it's done. Sometimes this can take 2-3 weeks to process so hopefully you have some money out or it hurts.

    • @economicsinjapan8076
      @economicsinjapan8076 9 месяцев назад

      It's pretty much the same with the withdrawing fees with other traditional banks. Weird how you have to pay to get your own money back right? When it comes to SMBC I don't have to do the KYC every year but pretty much all other money related services I use pester me all year round...
