The big issue over the pension inheritance tax issue is around retirement options. What I’ve found is very few regular well known pension companies will allow you to buy a retirement product with your retirement funds when you retire if you are not in the uk. That means you are forced to cash out the entire pension in a single tax event and. It spread it out over multiple years and so you pay much higher tax rate.

As a Brit in the USA I’m hitting a different issue, as I approach 60 I talk to the holder of my uk GPP pension fund and they tell me the only option I have is 100% cash out or leave it sitting here forever. They will not allow me to buy any form of pension or annuity because I’m outside the uk. Most leading name pension companies also say they won’t touch me. So I’m going to get hit either by a massive tax bill cashing out or inheritance tax for my son when I die,

As an expat in the USA I was planning to pass my uk pension to my son (use it last) and live in my USA pensions and investments. Now my plan is messed up. And sadly as a Brit dual citizen in the USA using my uk pension without difficult tax paperwork and maybe high tax wasn’t easy. So I suspect many expats won’t be so happy with the pension changes.

As really hoping for some news on the implications of the budget for people like us :-)

Thank you for the information. I’ve had legacy charges since 2013 issued to me. At the time, I was serving in the Army in Germany and was not aware of these charges or the requirement to submit a SA form.
