Against whom rose. Have you assumed these thorns? Is it your too fragile joy that forced you to become this armed thing? But from whom does it protect you, this exaggerated defense. How many enemies have I lifted from you who did not fear it at all? On the contrary, from summer to autumn you wound the affection that is given you.
Go Lovely Rose, Eric Whitacre

From the Acapella works of Eric Whitacre Go, lovely Rose- Tell her that wastes her time and me, That now she knows, When I resemble her to thee, How sweet and fair she seems to be. Tell her that's young, And shuns to have her graces spied, That hadst thou sprung In deserts where no men abide, Thou must have uncommended died. Small is the worth Of beauty from the light retired: Bid her come fort...

2:14 is my favorite chord in music, period
I love this piece so much omg. and the tension and release at 3:19 ❤️❤️
Wow wish my choir was doing this version 😭😭
Still my favorite recording.
Still my favorite recording.
Lindo! Conheci pela versão do Leonardo Gonçalves.
Sang this in Madrigals my senior year. It was the last song we performed together before graduation, and we were all in tears. Made it a little difficult to keep our tone good.
I'm autistic and I have synesthesia so this calms me down, and also I see a snowy forest scene. I'll write it out below. You're standing on a path. There's snow beneath your feet. There's a breeze, but the way you're bundled you're not cold. You have nowhere you should be, no one you should be with. You're just there, present in the moment. The sky is white. Small snowflakes fall from the sky. The trees are dark and not a single leaf hangs on them. There are stumps from branches which have wilted and died. It's calm. It's quiet. And you're at peace.
09:20am UK 4th June 2020 and I am hearing this for the first time on BBC R3, Ian Skelly. Just what I needed to hear 🙏🏻.
Me: “The perfect song doesn’t exi-“ Mormon college students: “ Hold my mocktail”
I sang this at college in the forties but to a different melody. My memory was jogged just today looking at the beautiful flower. Such wonderful lyrics and feel so grateful and blessed to have had an amazing music teacher who inspired us all,, much of this you rarely hear today.
Stretched out Stretched out on the grass A boy And a girl Savoring their oranges Giving their kisses Like waves Exchanging foam Stretched out Stretched out on the beach A boy And a girl Savoring their limes Giving their kisses Like clouds Exchanging foam Stretched out Stretched out underground A boy And a girl Saying nothing Never kissing Giving silence For silence Hmm
Love doesn't age. If you truly love someone, you will cherish the moments you have with them while you can. The stark realization that mortality is the only limit on earthly love can be troubling; however, it makes savoring the moments all the sweeter. Enjoy it while you can and never let it go. Love doesn't age.
We sang a different version of Go Lovely Rose this year in my choir and our conductor gave us a mental image to envision while we are singing it and it made me tear up every time we sang it.

Nothing like a 9 part chord. Pow.
When I was in high school, I was a soprano 1 and the guy I had a crush on was a bass and we used to practice together, just the two of us. When I was stressed or upset, he'd hum the bass line for me so I would calm down. Looking back on it now, the mere thought of it all makes me relax. This piece can bring me to tears.
Wonderful uplifting music
my regional choir did this awhile back and it was one of the most musical moments I have ever experienced, that will stand out for the rest of my life.
We won state in chorus with this song and sleep
Listening to his songs gives me the same goosebumps as when i sung them a decade ago
If any of my Nabors bois are out here. Y'all all the realest. Keep shoulder rollin
great music. me being a countertenor i still sing eric whitacre to warm my chords up since high school. his song are really great warm ups and song to sing
This will be playing at my funeral when I die...
The first 40 seconds of this are absolutely AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS
To me this song tells the story of partners who were once happy. They shared everything with each other. Their words, their belongings, their hearts. Their love was rooted in pure and unselfish generosity. A selfless love. But as the years passed and the months grow longer, they realized that their love has grown weary. In my mind, the song seems to jump ahead 5... 10...maybe even 20 years. They lie next to one another - perhaps physically, more likely metaphorically - knowing all the while that something has changed. This idea is played out through the long, leggato and at times "clashing" harmonic chords toward the end of the piece. The tragedy of it all is their mutual realization that it doesn't matter whether they can identify what is different or missing, or put it into words. What's lost is lost. Their bond is weathered beyond repair. Left are mere memories of a once-giving and seemingly eternal love.
My favourite Whitacre.
There's a phrase I learned long ago - music that "plays the silence." For those who have not heard such, here is your Exhibit A.
Lauridsen's treatment of the french unstressed and final 'e's is a bit strange for a french singer like me. He does not follow the classic rules of french prosody, as Poulenc would do, for example, but those of colloquial spoken French. I don't know if it's by ignorance of these rules or whether it's voluntary. In any case, we are tempted to restore these "e" s where he "swallows" them.
Puede ser una licencia musical. Quienes no tenemos el francés como lengua madre, no somos capaces de imitarles. Tal vez rs mejor elegir la opción que encaje con la partitura.
2:14 - 2:19 ...Top Choral orgasmic seconds
The Chamber Choir of Europe just knows how to pull it off with the PERFECT intensity, I love them so much
I played it with my orchestra It was meant to be played with a choir, but it was really good without it.
I loved this song when I watched Byu Concert Choir sing this. This made me want to join Concert Choir.
always makes me cry, always
いい曲だよなー

we did this song is choir
That tenor line makes me feel things
He conducted me one day, it was such an honor.
i sang this song in choir, it's one of the hardest songs are class has ever done but we nailed it.
This is beyond words.
I was in a choir and we skyped him
BYU Singers, Your performance here really is pretty stunning, I can discern your keen awareness of the chord balance and enunciation. Probably the finest performance of Boy & A Girl on RUclips. Ronald Staheli is amazing.

Tell her that’s young, And shuns to have her graces spied, That hadst thou sprung In deserts where no men abide, Thou must have uncommended died. That she The common fate of all things rare May read in thee; How small a part of time they share, That are so wondrous sweet and fair!
rose bates
The dissonance is absolutely beautiful.
One of my last songs that I sang with my Chamber Choir in high school😭 Wish I could go back there sometimes😭
I feel the exact same way. When we sang it, our director started to tear up in the middle of it and the sopranos almost lost it, but they held it together. Such a beautiful song. :)
I sang this in my chamber choir too! Such a beautiful piece still listen to it to this day.
Man this is so beautiful
I think pretty poetic, beautiful poetry and what a generous act to produce some music for your mentor and teacher. I love the virtual choir too.
no , no it's not a good sawng
This song is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever encountered. We're singing at my school right now, and I teared up when i first heard it. The clashing and dissonance embodies the feeling of sexual tension, but also of how fleeting and delicate their love is. Eric Whitacre captured mortality perfectly in this piece, the fact that weather or not love dies, people die. Nothing lasts forever.
+Joy Bergner O.o
a literal interpretation is an inaccurate one.
+Dalton James how is this relevant.....?
+Anna Hanson it's relevant because you interpreted it wrong, and that, if you were to perform this your emphasised phrases would be inaccurate.
+Dalton James I interpreted what?
