One night in the summer of 1992, not that long after the Wall came down, I stood on the Charles Bridge in Prague, the bridge that spans the Vltava (aka the Moldau); I played this song in my head and seldom has there been a more appropriate song for the moment. Prague was in the midst of another invasion, but this time it wasn't the Wehrmacht; 40,000 Americans had arrived in the city and their presence was visible everywhere. Farther down the bridge there was a crowd of about 100 young people sitting on the pavement, singing along in English with a busker who was playing "Hotel California..." (!!!) I stood there, trying to ignore them, gazing into the Vltava's dark waters, and thought to myself "On the bed of the Moldau/ The stones are turning/The days of the rulers/Are ending fast..." . The wheel continues to roll.

Dagmar Krause is a great singer/artist. She has so many layers, finesse and intensity. I remember this album from the time when I was a post-teen and it has haunted me ever since.
