Britain needs iconic entrepreneurs like Sir Clive, i fear we won't see his like again
99 red balloons go bye.
⚪🔴🟡🟢🔵🟣🟤⚫1984 the late and great Sir Clive Sinclair >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Sinclair
Famous words replied Hermann Hauser "cord must be cut". "Cut the green wire"...What a genius!
Sophie Mary Wilson (born Roger Wilson; June 1957) is an English computer scientist, a co-designer of the Instruction Set for the ARM architecture. Wilson first designed a microcomputer during a break from studies at Selwyn College, Cambridge. She subsequently joined Acorn Computers and was instrumental in designing the BBC Microcomputer, including the BBC BASIC programming language. She first began designing the ARM reduced instruction set computer (RISC) in 1983, which entered production two years later. It became popular in embedded systems and is now the most widely used processor architecture in smartphones. In 2011, she was listed in Maximum PC as number 8 in an article titled "The 15 Most Important Women in Tech History". She was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2019.
Brilliant to see this again but christ the long adverts really spoilt it
"Clive Sinclair" looks like he's playing a character from a Python pisstake.
Halcyon days. 1st computer, a ZX. Truly trailblazing times. Over 40 years ago. Time & the tide...
I remember about 1980 I think, about 13 or so Mum brought home a bbc micro and cub screen from her school - she was a primary school teacher, and wanted me to show her how to use it
13:16 "Your Prussian friend." That was comedy gold on several levels. Prussia hadn't existed as an independent country since 1870, and then ceased to exist completely even as a geographic term in 1945. And then he uses that defunct term to refer to an Austrian, whose national character could not have been more antithetical to that of the Prussians and who have traditionally harboured a deep mutual dislike. To this day, Austrians refer to the inhabitants of the former Prussian territory as "Saupreiß'n" (Prussian Swine). The latter reciprocate by referring to Austrians as "Schluchtenscheißer" (Ravine Shitters).
32:46 Oxtail Soup WARMING AND NUTRITIOUS
Sinclair came across as affable - not a total dick like this portrayal - if he was really like this no one would work for him surely
Ah. Made me nostalgic! I went up to Cambridge in 1982. My college had bought a BBC Micro and placed it in a basement room you could book for free in 2 hour increments. I remember writing something that drew sine curves! I went on to a career in database administration and _teaching_ database administration. Wouldn't have happened without a little sprinkling of BBC Basic at 3AM in the college basement! I kind of wish I'd been born either five years earlier or five years later: it would have been nice to be a kid for whom computers were uniquitous. It would have been equally nice to have been in on the ground zero that was Cambridge computing development. Oh well. I didn't do too badly on the end.
Chris Curry said "Bugger." 43:30 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Curry
Loads & loads of games interns of Jet-set willy with the telephone up & down the late Sir Clive Sinclair >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Sinclair
I would absolutely die of second hand embarrassment if I were that soy boy
Wonderful. My Spectrum sent me on a journey via an Atari 800 XL and Atari ST to a PhD in electronics and then a life as a quantitative trader writing code to trade the markets in major investment banks. Thanks Sir Clive. May you rest in peace.
Ah, computer history! My very first computer (actually my dad's ;-) ) was the Acorn BBC Model B computer!! Fantastic computer, and not very common in The Netherlands. At that time (1982) the most popular home computers used in The Netherlands were the Philips P2000T (the education computer used at schools), the Commodore 64 (used at home) and the PC (used at work).
For someone who was sucking 8+ mililion pounds from tax payers money to deliver nothing, Clive should have more respoect for comunists and his neoliberal government.
Wow. An oldie but a goodie. Except for Sinclair, I was only vaguely familiar with home computing outside the US at the time.
He was an achiever >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Sinclair
so Google can make all sort of Algorythms, and employ therm all over their properties, but they cannot make one that will put their stupid Ads at places where they should be.
One thing i find interesting about the home computer revolution back then it seemed like it almost unified everyone from the average joe to the wealthy elite, it seemed everyone was blown away by the tech advancement and rightfully so. I was born 91 so i missed out on all of this and no one really mention these computers around my house as a kid cause PC was on the rise. These days i have grown a sick love for these old 8-bit and16-bit machines so simple but still so effective it seems. Great Film gotta show this one to the family for sure.
24:55 "Z88 processor...". Should have been Z80 processor. The Z88 was a computer Sinclair made in the late 80s. 40:58 A plate Ford Fiesta. It's supposed to be 1981, A registrations came out in 1983-84. 41:40 "Proposals from Dragon, Oric..." Should have been Tangerine not Oric. The Oric computer wasn't released until 1983, this is supposed to be 1981.
but, compare this to the first season of Halt and Catch Fire! Every critic thinks it's about Compaq, but it much more closely resembles Corona Data Systems. IBM lawyers never bothered Compaq about the BIOS, they knew what they did was perfectly legal. Corona Data Systems copied the BIOS outright, and they were forced to settle with IBM,
Is that Sophie (nee Roger) Wilson at 1:20:02, serving a drink to Sinclair? I heard she has a cameo in the film.
Yes, that's Sophie.
0:39 did i hear that right?
It’s fine in the UK
Gabby was fit.
45:44 that's exactly how code is written, pure hexadecimal at insane speed.
Thank you for the ARM chip you crazy British blokes.
Thankyou for the ARM chip that’s in my phone you crazy Cambridge inventors!
Amazing film thank you!!!
1:15:51 - when he sees the advert ... and goes RED ...
"it's usually men who say that"? Not where I'm from!
Great job showing this time period. I love the soundtrack
At least back then as a country we were trying to compete. Thatcher's rot eventually put paid to all that and now we make nothing.
In you case you missed it Thatcher was in power when this happened. It was Blair who made Britain a house price mass immigration economy with unemployment hidden by useless mass University education
1:19:24 yes and every smartphone in the world is using what is written on that whiteboard, nice reference
Whats the name of the original tune playing in the background near the beginning, starts around 0:58
Sounds like a Jarre release changed up a bit
I think it's a cover of Pulstar by Vangelis.
Pulstar by Vangelis.
@@michaelturner4457 Thanks, though it might have been Jean-Michel Jarre... no wonder I had trouble finding it lol
Sorry to be picky, but Chris Curry drove to the BBC in an A-plate fiesta, meaning it was registered in 1983. The BBC micro came out in 1981.
LOL
Sophie Wilson (formerly Roger Wilson) serving behind the bar at the end. Nice touch.
She probably apologised for using "male language" rather than actually saying the cnut word 😂
if the returning office says “Jeremy Cunt - Conservative Party” as he loses his seat in the general election, i will literally die with laughter
The most educative movie about what means to be British.
My first employer was a guy who worked for Sinclair as an undergraduate. I can confirm that his portrayal as a petulant twat is an accurate one
Usually men that say it??? Thats the 3rd woman so far to say it live that i've seen
Perfect. Thank you Victoria..
Thanks for the many commercials, it makes the video unwatchable.
If by now you don't know that RUclips itself puts the ads in and not the channel, then there's no hope for you. Also, Adblock exists, but I'm guessing you don't know about that either.
I've read on and seen all the bleeding heart men lambasting her for the 'men' comment. Honestly? She panicked, and trust me, I know it's not all men, but socialize with some rugby/football players, police, fire, army, teachers, council staff, ohhhh, quite a lot of men. It's not the first time it's happened and personally I HATE the word. Why should a bit of my bod be such an insult, but calling someone a 'dick' or 'cock' is almost a term of endearment!!
Hahahaha!! I know I'm not 15 but I can't stop laughing!
I like how sir Clive comes across like Davao’s in the first scene
