NZ long distance EV road trip on a BYD Atto 3
Chris and I are back at it again! We retraced our steps back to Christchurch for a conference and back to Taupo, this time in a BYD Atto 3. We wanted to see how this car compares to our previous experience with the 2017 Nissan Leaf (it had reduced battery health, about 100km useful range).
The Atto 3 has a 60kWh battery which has a realistic motorway range of around 360kms at full charge. Over a 1500km return trip from Taupo to Christchurch, we broke the trip up into 5.5 hours travel a day.

    One of the worst experiences ever, I have a dog and I just adopted two cats but one of the cats keeps hitting my dog and hissing at him and even sometimes at the other cat so I decided to take he back to the shelter while she is still young so she can find a home where she'll be the only pet, but I'm so sad I already grew attached to her and I don't want her to suffer or feel abandoned but I hope she finds a good home where she'll feel safe

    Thank you for posting. I had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender my rescue kitty. I had him since he was 4 weeks old. We took really good care of him. The only challenge was him constantly wanting to run out the house when he was 6 months old. I tried developing a system to allow him to go out and return back. It worked once but he later couldnt find his way home. Thankfully I managed to find him after hearing his cries, late at night. It also didnt help that the area I resided in is very hilly and has a bit of traffic. I also reside in a complex and don't have the yard space to build him a big cattio. I tried to distract him with play etc but he would eventually want to go outside. Bought a leash to take him on walks to fulfil his desire but he would always want to run out again when we get back. I eventually had to make the heartbreaking decision to turn him in to our local shelter. I cry everyday as I miss him so much and im having a hard time dealing with it.

    Your title made me judge you, apologies! A cat that will bully another cat, can actually kill it, just through stress. Unfortunately I didn’t know this and when my ex husband left my daughters cat on my doorstep, she bullied my other female cat, all neutered, but the stress eventually killed her, at only 12 years old. I still cry even though it’s been years. She actually would go for her throat and pin her down. As a person who’s had cats most of my life, I’ve never experienced anything like it and hope I never do. ❤

    Thank you 🙏🏻 This video has helped me so much. I had to make the decision of returning a cat that needs to be an only cat as well or at least with a more playful/younger cat. My older cat lost his life long companion, i adopted another senior cat that previously lived w another cat as well. It wasn't a good match and I'm devastated over it. Seeing this video is the first time in days i feel a little lighter. ❤

    Chicago guy here and my new born kids are allergic to my cats. A 2 year old male Luke and 3 year old female Ella. I spent $4,000 renovating my garage for them to live in with insulation and a heating/ac window unit. It's a detached garage. No cars are parked inside. I have layered their beds and the floor to keep them off the concrete ( which I epoxyed ). Plus I wrapped their houses in that teflon aluminum foam stuff. And put beds inside which I change out regularly. The 2 do not get along. The male plays too rough for the female so she hates him. We thought this would stop over time. It hasnt. I have them sectioned off in their own spaces. Roughly 30 sqft each. Though I let the female roam around the garage more freely than the male. He's missing his back legs from the knees down.. Adopted him that way. So there less space for him to roam than the rug I put down. She has an illness where she use to walk around drunk but she got better with age. Though her stool was basically water when we got her and she would projectile poop everywhere.. And sometimes fall in it and get it all over herself and my home.. Since she's gotten better at walking the poop has also been 50/50 loose, she doesn't fall in it as much anymore. Basically both cats are special needs. With the Chicago winter here, it's been moderately cold. Worst so far has been 25 degrees outside. My heating/ac unit maxes at 81 degrees. 5-6ft away is their spaces and I have a thermometer by their spaces and it shows 50-55 degrees. I am afraid that when the Chicago weather goes negative, it could drop to 25-30 degrees or lower in their area despite my heating/ac unit pumping out 81 degrees... ( It was $800 and I thought it would do better... ) I can't have them inside since my newborns are allergic and the no kill shelters are saying they will take them back and rehome them. I am terrified not knowing where they would go if I rehomed them... Per their adoption contracts, If cannot care for them anymore, I have to bring them back to the agencies Is it cruel if keep them like this? check them twice a day and sometimes play with them when I can like when l'm working in the garage but deep down I want them to have a warm home to live in and roam freely. I am having a very hard time deciding what I should do. advice would be appreciated.

      Oh it was just a tiki tour to see what's the charging facility like in Palmy :)

  • @dwainthecat
    @dwainthecat 8 месяцев назад

    Atto 3 charging speed is its main downside. Most new cars can fast charge at 150kwh and upwards. This and only charging to 80% would have made a big difference to your charging time. But as long as you had a good experience that's the main thing.

    • @gregb1599
      @gregb1599 8 месяцев назад

      What is 150kwh charge speed? And we live in NZ, so most charge stations are 50kw, with some now hitting 75kw with just a few 180kw and 300kw, also like most EV the they only peak at 100kw plus for a very short time even Tesla Model 3 peak at 170kw dropping fast as they hit like 40%

    • @dwainthecat
      @dwainthecat 8 месяцев назад

      @gregb1599 model 3 peak is 250kw but I get your statement. A lot of ev haters will jump on the fact that there was a lot of time charging, just wanted to point out that there are many cars that charge much faster as atto3 has max 88kw charge speed.

    • @gregb1599
      @gregb1599 8 месяцев назад

      @dwainthecat Only the LR Model 3 is 250kw the standard range, which is 90% of the Model 3 sold in NZ is the 170kw max as it uses LFP

    • @gregb1599
      @gregb1599 8 месяцев назад

      @dwainthecat Yep, and until the charging infrastructure has all chargers at 180kw or faster, then high-speed EV that charge faster than 75kw even Tesla as unlike many other countries NZ still lacks even super charging locations. Can you imagine having a 100kwh Model S or X charging at a 50kw charger? That's 2 hours in ideal conditions. We have two 40kwh Nissan Leaf, so we are not EV haters, but for us to want to do a trip like that, we would rather have an EV that can travel 500km and just charge overnight at each stop rather than stopping at a 50kw charger. We are considering the new RWD 82kwh BYD Seal, but again it's charging speeds are as you say rather slow with a very limited time at 130kw dropping to around 100kw or less as seen by some reviews, however it's also got that big battery so probably not need to stop other than for breaks.

    My sis is having a problem with two of her resident cats peeing on everything. She took in a stray cat and I guess her two resident cats hate her. It’s been months of them Spraying her couches , bed , curtains. She took them to vet and both are healthy so it’s behavioral issues that started when she took the stray. She said she is going to look into behavioral tactics with a pet behavior specialist. I don’t know what else she can do. I suggested her watching galaxy guy on here for tips like more litterboxes and litterboxes in the areas the cats are peeing and making sure the boxes are always cleaned etc. I never had cats to spray . Thag has got to be a nightmare to deal with

    I just had to do that. I felt terrible. I cried hard afterwards. I adopted two cats 15 years ago together. One of them passed away a year ago. I debated an entire year if I should get my cat another friend. I went to APL 3 times to look trying to figure out the best cat I read a bunch of things , watched videos etc and finally decided on another boy that was 8 years old ( thinking that paired well with an older 15 year old ). The 8 year adopted cat had lived with another female. So I thiight it would go wonderfully. Boy was I wrong. That 8 year old is extremely friendly to people. He would follow everyone around , roll around , purr , lick your hand etc. we tried the swapping blankets , swapping rooms , tried the screen. Then let them be in same room. Every time he would be the one to attack. My 15 year old would hiss and walk away but the adopted cat would run after to attack and growl. The APL gives 30 days where you can bring a pet back if it isn’t working. I think I needed more time. I have to now work out of state and I can’t bring two cats who are going fight with me. It is very stressful introducing cats. I had never done it before and I don’t think I will ever do that again. I watched all those Jackson galaxy videos and others for tips and the only thing I vxn think of is maybe I needed more time. Then I started reading it can sometimes take months to a year for some cats to get along. Then I read older cats can be harder to introduce. It is a terrible feeling to give the animal back. I started to really bond with him. But looking at the entire picture I think he will be happier in a home with maybe no other cats or someone who has a lot more time to do the introduction. It also wasn’t fun hearing him cry at night to be let out bc I had to keep him in one of the bedrooms . When I let him out I had to lock other cat up or there would be epic fights. What I also got from this experience was fleas. My cat who is 15 never had fleas. She has them now and I’m not sure if the adoptive cat had them when I brought him home or if my resident cat got them from screen windows. She is indoor so those are the only two ways she could have gotten fleas so she is on prescription flea meds and so is he. The dr went a head and put him on it before I returned him. I pray he finds an amazing home bc he was the sweetest cat to people. Perfect cat. I am upset it didn’t work out

    We had two cats we got during COVID, one being a short haired tortie and a short haired black cat, about a month apart. They get along really well. We went to the shelter and got a third cat this year who was about 9 months old (a year or so from when we got the original two).. He is a sweet but also is a bit of an asshole. We love him, but he and the tortie cat do not get along. They tolerate each other at times but she hisses at the newer cat. The new cat has been proceeding to pee on furniture. We gave him about 9 months to try to calm down. We thought it stopped but noticed he was doing it elsewhere and recently started peeing everywhere again. Needless to say he is being returned back as unfortunate as it is.we feel terrible, but its the right thing to do. Sometimes the cats just aren't a great fit in the dynamic. We are hoping he can maybe be the alpha male with a kitten in another home or be an only cat elsewhere.

    I'm wrestling with this decision right now. I've never had cats before and I adopted a senior cat. I'm trying to be patient but he's being so disruptive to my life. :( The #1 thing right now is that he's waking me up every 20min at night, I haven't been able to sleep and it's infuriating. Plus I can't get him to stop peeing in my kitchen floor. I don't want to take him back but maybe I'm just not good with cats. :(

    • @JeffNQiDo
      @JeffNQiDo Год назад

      oh I'm so sorry to hear about your situation :( Sometimes senior cats have dementia or other illnesses that could cause these behavioral issues. I think he's not what most of us expect when we are looking to adopt and sounds like it might have been the reason he was given up. Senior cats like him will probably need special care. It would be a best-case scenario if they (the shelter) could find him people who know how to look after a special cat. But I wouldn't say you're not good with cats based on this experience, if you ever have the opportunity again, a young cat can be a wonderful companion :)

    • @ccalexander1924
      @ccalexander1924 10 месяцев назад

      How old is the senior cat ? The one I adopted was 8. He had a full bloodwork panel and check up before I adopted him. I watched all kinds of videos and read things on adopting older cats. I’m guessing he had a full panel of bloodwork done that was normal so my next guess would be try a different litter. Make sure it’s a softer sandier litter that is easier on older feet. Make sure the litterbox doesn’t have that hood on it. You want a nice open wide one incase he has trouble getting in and out ( older cats can have arthritis etc ) so having a bigger open litterbox is helpful. I also learned you need two boxes per cat. So if he is the only cat make sure he has two boxes and try putting one of the boxes where he is spraying. My adoptive cat would cry middle of night bc he wanted out of that bedroom but he would attack the resident cat so I couldn’t let him out at night. Having cats and dogs can be stressful sometimes. I had to give that adopted cat back bc he kept attacking my resident cat. It’s an awful feeling taking them back. It’s something I know I can never do again. I cried hard. I got attached to him . I had him 3 weeks. Since I have to work out if state I couldn’t take him with me and other cat fighting. To stressful for me and both cats. I hope it all worked out with you and your cat.

She was good for about two weeks, then she started waking me up at night, biting and scratching me all the time, destroying everything I have inside, from curtains to plants, books, clothes. I work 24 hour shifts 5-6 times a month, so I was already sleep deprived. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in two months and I feel exhausted.I also got her spayed and had to keep an eye on her non stop for about a week because she ripped off her stitches and had to get new ones 🤦🏻‍♀️I hoped she’ll get along with my Mum’s 4 cats, she lives in a house with a large backyard and I thought it would be easier if my cat can roam outside like she was used to, but there’s no chance for that. My cat is quite aggressive with them too, especially the elderly cat. I feel really sorry for my cat but I think I will have to return her back to the colony😢

      Im dealing with this as well, I adopted my 5year old cat from the shelter less than 6 months ago and within 2 months, he began waking me up constantly throughout the night even with an auto feeder and auto water dispenser plus tons of play before bed. I'm highly considering rehoming him back to the shelter because I can't not have one night of sleep and its killing me no matter what I try, plus I'm struggling to then bond with him. Doesn't help I'll be moving in with my bf v soon and I wasn't aware how severe his allergies were in comparison to my moms in the past. I feel extremely guilty and I cry thinking of letting him go, but I have no idea what to do and my family already has their own pets as well

      Cat might have sickness if peeing floor or liter is dirty. I would advice take cat to vet to find out what's wrong.

      Our previous senior cat was sunbathing in our yard and a couple of aggressive dogs snuck in from under the neighbor's fence, and she didn't stood a chance :(

    My gf and I just adopted a cat yesterday who who was surrendered after 4 years 2 days ago. The only info the shelter had was that the owners were rude and supposedly they couldn't afford the cat anymore. We have 2 weeks to return the cat to exchange it if it didn't work out or recieved a $50 credit to get another cat. We love animals and I've worked at a pet rescue and at the end of the day us who really want to adopt and help a cat out or any animal sometimes it just doesn't work out and it's the effort that counts.

      @ynot6205 in glad it brought you some comfort. It's life and things happen, and even though others may judge they won't understand until it or if it happens to them. I know people who put their dog down after showing aggression towards their children because once a dog shows that it's bound to happen. I was animal control officer as well and did a lot of studying and training.

    So you abandoned this poor baby girl back to the shelter and replaced her with another cat. You should be ashamed of yourself. It's people like you who don't deserve animals. You didn't deserve that poor baby girl hopefully she found a home that truly loves her and will never ever abandon her like you did. You make my blood boil. You have no idea what it's like to be abandoned and tossed aside like you mean nothing. That's what you did to that poor baby. I sincerely hope you don't abandon these babies either but I wouldn't put it past someone like you. Your not to be trusted.

      Hi Yvonne, yes, it has a small slope of 2-3 degrees if I remember correctly based on the existing pergola. We would have preferred it to slope a bit more (5 degrees) if we had built it from scratch.

    I’m just about to order a billion! I’m addicted to looking at the designs. I kinda want them all. I’m pretty crafty, but I’ve never tried embroidery! The reason I searched your video was to be sure you understood the instructions, and were able to complete something!

      Oh yes I did find the instructions to be clear enough. Even though the English wasn't 100%, they have step by step images for each type of stich, that I found to be very helpful. I hope you'll enjoy the embroidery process :)
