Thundersnow happens becausw of sea effect snowfall. Sea effect mechanism makes thunder possible. If it was cyclonic snowfall, that was not so possible.

​@@arya_shm Yes, exactly as you said. This phenomenon often happens in Attica due to the effect of the Aegean sea and is called Aegean sea effect snow.

@@droneinnorth399 yes. Also i live in Istanbul, in rural area, 200+ meter elevation. We get more than 50 cm of fresh snow every winter with sea effect from Black Sea, while city center enjoys sun. Thundersnow is a too common phenomenon, that it happens as frequent as thunderstorms there. I only witnessed thundersnow without sea effect one time in a continental climate, eastern Thrace near Evros river and it was during 2005 february snowstorm which dumped 70+ cm to Thrace region. Yes it is possible but its tooo rare with cyclonic storms.

@@arya_shm Yes, the sea(lake) effect is the easiest way to create thunder snowstorms. In our region, the aegean effect is also combined with wind convergences and strengthens the snowfall even more. I would like to experience this phenomenon once in the Black Sea. How What is the name of the area you live in so I can study it meteorologically?

@@droneinnorth399 Sure. I live in Basaksehir, a rural district of Istanbul. Also Catalca district witness heavy snowstorms frequently. It's an area that deserves future meteorological studies for sure. 7 years ago i was studying in high school. My high school was placed near Hagia Sophia mosque, and climate was too mild, dropping barely below 0 throughout winter. One afternoon i jumped in metro while it was sunny. Arrived at Basaksehir, my house after one hour. When i stepped out of metro station, there was a heavy snowstorm with 15+ cm snow on the ground. You should definitely study microclimates of Istanbul. Especially northwestern side called "Çatalca" gets toooo much sea effect, even more than my hometown Basaksehir. 100+ cms are not a magic there.

Days of snow in Athens are 4 every here usually. And of course snow can cover Athens. This happens once every 2 years.
