Totally coincidental with Curzon's birthday, but one of my favorite recordings of this concerto. Unfortunately there is a short but very noticeable audio dropout at the beginning of the 3rd movement.
wow!

I'm referring to the coda of the 1st movement!
Ridiculous sudden speed up towards end of coda! Where is the wonderful rhythm of the timpani? For timpani just listen to Solti with the Chicago SO on Decca which for me is my favourite Bruckner 6 overall.
Tempo wie anfangs.

RIP Maestro!
Finally, i find most immaculate version thank you Gilels
Oh man, he had me until that subito fast tempo at the end of the coda!! (1st mvt)
Smooth and polished playing, pacey and exciting interpretation, very bright brassy sound, the best kind of Bruckner performance: fired up and magisterial!
Une oeuvre merveilleuse. Pourquoi est-elle si rarement jouée ? Merci.
music music
Reihe".
...great technique
Great performance. Thank you very much for posting it
No answer?
Katchen is at the piano.
@@RabidCh yup, and it's a cool picture. Any idea what they're playing? Would be interesting if Britten ever conducted any Bartok.
@@ilirllukaci5345 Britten's Diversions during their 1954 studio recording.
Sure it's Rosbaud conducting?
Great recording RiP maestro Abbado!
A revelation. The first movement’s tempo allows both uninterrupted lines and a vocal-style sculpting of them. Schnabel disdains the usual phrase-end gaps, moving through them (as Brahms himself advocated, as a matter of principle) to reveal much longer, INTEGRATED(!) structures than we ever hear today-and this performance gives the lie to a common misconception that technically he wasn’t a stunningly-equipped pianist. Great to hear Szigeti before that disfiguring wobble invaded his vibrato and, of course, Fournier’s stunning, unerring ability to “find the opium” rounds out an unforgettable experience. Thank you for posting it!
What a blessing to have such recordings available at 16
0:01 From the very beginning, a flowing current of sheer beauty ... uncontrolled, massive, generous, with noble brutality. I'm singing in front of my screen, with no shame at all ......
Horridly fast. Why play it so fast when berceuse translates as lullaby? 🤷♂️
This is so very passionate! Amazing playing! There also extant recordings from the same’47 festival of the Schubert B Flat and the Mendelssohn D minor.
Stupenda interpretazione ! Grande Maestro Sergio Fiorentino!
The only few recordings that bring out the con brio quality
Fournier's opening phrase is stunning.
Absolutamente sensacional.
Firkusny was the real thing. This concerto ditto.
The third movement shows Schnabel's mastery of slow tempi, maintaining the melodic line while allowing the glorious theme to unfold with all majesty.
It's really wonderful. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was maybe the very best pianist of his times. What a great performance! Thank you so much for uploading this.
Why the picture of Britten?
Lots of comments here saying - too fast. You miss the whole point of the piece and interpretation. IT IS one of the greatest takes on this beautiful piece by Chopin. Emotive, immersive, creating an atmosphere of an quiet evening, when the mother is tucking her child to sleep. Of course Chopin wasn't an impressionist composer, but Hoffman managed to create a beautiful image with his interpretation. When I listened to it for the first time, I couldn't understand the tempo he chose, until I listened to the end, and heard the distant church bells or maybe an old garndfather's clock striking in the late evening hour - just pure genius. Don't hate this, embrace it for what it is: a romantic, atmospheric piece. If you want a sleepy version listen to thousand other samey renditions.
Yeah….it‘s almost like they’re saying please keep it boring and safe, I can‘t stand excellence I want mediocrity! Funny how these same pedants would probably never insist that the Chopin Waltzes were meant literally for dancing therefore they must be played slowly….so it is with the Berceuse. In Chopin’s marvelous hands the lullaby becomes a vehicle for masterful and original feats of pianism and not merely a piece to put the listener to sleep! If Hofmann should dazzle with some brilliant pianism of his own then that is entirely in the Chopin tradition. If you got it, flaunt it!
You’re absolutely correct! He gets this effect at the end like one of those mantle clocks chiming. Absolute goosebumps
Nessuna smanceria musicale. Eterna sobrietà e capacità narrante. Fraseggio ampio e suono ricercato
Does anyone know where and when this astounding performance was recorded?
September 26, 1947. Broadcast recording from London.
Speechless… Bravo!!
An outstanding performance by a vastly underrated conductor. But he shouldn't have interpolated the Blumine movement into Mahler's revised Four movement version.
