    When it comes to younger artists, I hope they don't take their art too seriously for a while. I am concerned that many kids / teens feel unhealthy levels of pressure to justify their hobbies by monetizing them or making them a career path. There are so many 13-20 year olds who like art but are so distracted by these external pressures that they forget to just enjoy life creating things. With that said, I think most people are better suited keeping art as their hobby. It is incredibly difficult to take something so deeply personal, that brings you joy and stress relief, and turn it into 'serious' work. If someone chooses to make art their career, I hope they are not feeling like they have to in order to be a real / valid artist. Sometimes an artist is 'serious' and skilled, but they realize art is best for them if it's not a career. (Shoutout to anyone who had to make that difficult decision.) I would consider myself rather 'serious' about my art. The path I'm pursuing is illustration (both freelance and personal projects). I agree it's important to learn Adobe and whatever else is industry standard, but it's also important to recognize that these standards can (and will) change. I remember when Quark and 3ds Max were standard, and I don't think they are used much anymore.. So, I know how to use Adobe CC, but I also enjoy learning new programs; expanding my skill sets and I encourage other artists to do the same. Currently, I use Clip Studio Paint for digital painting. My tablet is also not a standard Wacom Cintiq, but a Huion Kamvas. I think there is more room if you're not in an 'in house' creative position, as long as you can deliver what the client expects. I truly believe the industry would improve if Adobe had more competition in the creative software space. Maybe Procreate can help facilitate that?

    Alrighty I just stumbled upon this video, so everything I say about the situation is based on how you yourself describe it here. Forgive the length of this comment lol I just like to talk. I totally agree that not every video has to be catered to every artist, no video can do that. It's fine and good to give advice mainly to professionals or people who want to be professionals, and to describe objectively and realistically things that professionals do or don't do. People who aren't professionals and know they don't exactly want to be should be able to look at your videos, realize that the advice isn't necessarily applicable to them, and either continue enjoying the videos with that in mind or find a channel that is more applicable to them and their art goals. Honestly, I think a lot of hobbyist amateur artists online have just had bad experiences with having their art shamed, being told that they *have* to take and implement all art criticism they receive as soon as possible, no matter how subjective the advice sometimes is, or else there's something wrong with them. There's a pressure to constantly get better and better, people project onto artists that their only goal should be to constantly improve their art with extremely dedicated professionalism, treating every piece of art as something that exists to aid their growth until their art is something other people will approve of, which can indeed cause burnout in artists and make them feel like they're not allowed to take their time enjoying the experience. As an artist who has no interest in doing art professionally, I totally feel this pressure, and I think it's kind of unfair since the only goal I've truly wanted for myself is just to have fun and create things that bring me joy and comfort, and bring that joy and comfort to however many or few others share my particular niche interests, I'm not personally driven by a desire to be the best I possibly can be at the craft. So in general I agree with almost everything you said, however I will say that I don't really like the phrase "artists should take art more seriously". This sentence does seem to suggest that everyone online under the artist umbrella, whether hobbyist or professional since you didn't specify, shouldn't think that having fun is just as valid of a priority. This isn't just saying what you want for your own art, but dictating what other people *should* want. Now, I'll give the benefit of the doubt that this isn't what you meant, I think the idea is probably just that artists should be more conscious of the fact that this is a legit job for many people, but if that's the case then I think the words you actually used were ineffective at conveying this point and give off a completely different idea. It doesn't help that this is the phrase in the thumbnail too. I think the artists who aim to be professionals in the industry should take it seriously, and I think everybody should *value* artists more for what they do, but other than that I think artists online who do it for fun should take it however seriously they want to. In my opinion this phrase is no better than the sentiment you're criticizing-- I agree that not everything should cater to hobbyists, but not everything should cater to professionals either, art should be however serious the particular artist wanted it to be, or however serious it should be for the spaces they really want to find themselves in. For the case of online artists, assuming they're not trying to get into any specific groups, the internet is a space with a minimum requirement of 0% seriousness, and I think it's neat that everybody has a place here. Some people make art for nobody but themselves and people just like them, and that isn't wrong of them to do so, those people don't owe the world anything through their art, other than common respect and decency of course. Anyway, I'm not hating on you, nor do I wish hate upon you. Again I'm assuming that you didn't intend for that to be the message, and I'm not even mad at all because wording one thing poorly is something we are all more than capable of. I understand that it's hard to have every single word get across properly in a video-- there's always gonna be someone who misinterprets you, and I guess that's somewhat the root of all this to begin with. I'm sorry that this situation has put stress on your shoulders and I'm glad you chose to make a video expressing your thoughts on the matter, overall I think they're very valid and that you haven't done anything wrong. I just had my own two cents on a minor aspect of the video as an artist coming to it from my own perspective.

      Don't worry about the length, I definitely appreciate the insight! I definitely agree that hobbyists have been pushed around and harassed online for not being "perfect" at their chosen craft, you're absolutely correct about that. I wanted the title of my video to be short enough to catch people's attentions, and then hopefully they'd listen to my video and understand that I didn't mean "all artists" online! My idea is more about artists taking the craft of art seriously, as in considering it a serious practice and not just a hobby. Obviously many artists are not interested in the professional field whatsoever, but I feel like they should be able to accept that some advice is simply not pertinent to them and move on. Hobbyists are definitely a large backbone within art being so popular and prevalent online, and I would never want to imply that they should absolutely follow what I, or anyone else, says. I really appreciate that your comment addressed so many things! It gives me a lot to think about and I appreciate how respectful you were about it! I would love to expand more on this topic in the future and possibly readdress what I said here, but right now I am just finding my feet on social media/youtube as a whole and just wanted to push this out there to the world! I am really happy you commented, it really helps me !!!

    imo i believe that a large majority of why people don't "take art seriously" is that for a while, a considerable chunk of the art community voiced their frustrations with middle/high school art teachers discouraging young artists from exploring non-classical styles and techniques of artistry, that there is only one way of doing art and that is through classical or traditional techniques. at some point in the past, even digital art wasn't considered "real art", and the artists having grown up with this teachers who say things like this this ended up becoming art youtubers who say that it's okay to stray from the rules, that it's okay to draw whatever makes you happy. i dont think it's a bad message in of itself, as you said, there is an audience for hobbyists or even artists going through burnout that would find this helpful. with that being said, i do agree that it is frustrating that there are artists who don't take art as seriously as they should, and especially if they're aiming to break into the art industry, and that the art community is sorely lacking resources talking about art from an industrial and professional standpoint. but i dont think it's the fault of the art community themselves, and im inclined to say that the artists should know better than to disregard fundamentals and better techniques in lieu of just doing whatever they want to and thinking that it would be enough to become a professional artist.

    • @divyasoup
      @divyasoup 14 часов назад

      Oh, this is a great addition to my video, wow! You're right, I didn't consider how art teachers in middle and high school might provoke this side of people's thoughts! I definitely think art teachers job's (and hearts) are in the right place, like, their job is to teach people the fundamentals of creating, not the hobbyist's methods, but I definitely see how people would resent that. I think it's very difficult for industrial and professional level artists to become content creators because it takes up SO MUCH time being a creative! A lot of the work is under NDA's and other restrictions, so they don't have time to do their job and then make so much content for free! I am definitely hoping to put my two cents into the art community online and express my own thoughts, opinions, and education on social media, so I'm really delighted that people are interested in what I have to say. Thank you so much for your thoughts!

    I feel you and no, you’re not crazy. As someone hoping to break the professional industry of art within the next few years I’ve noticed that there’s a lot less videos out there to find that talk about that kind of thing or the skills you need, I’ve definitely found a few of them but it’s so much less than when it comes to simple tutorials for hobbyists and beginners or art as entertainment via something like speedpaints (with cuts in them or 1-3 minute long) or art challenges which are fun to watch, but aren’t really set up in a way to help you find new techniques or processes, (demo videos are best because they actively help you to do that because the artist purposefully is breaking down their process and explaining it). I also find that many of the channels from pro animators, splash artists and others in the industry and not just making a living off of social media as their main line of income tend to bring in a lot less viewers or are super small. I think this might have something to do with the reason your viewer base might be taking things related to professional art the wrong way, it’s less common to find in general but also likely the sentiment of wanting to “go your own way and be different” is probably another factor. When I was a beginner and not an intermediate looking to improve and eventually go pro, I tried my best to ignore the art fundamentals and only do what I was good at until one day I realized that I would never be able to improve if I didn’t practice what I wasn’t good at when it came to art (the fundamentals), I think a lot of hobbiests especially young ones share that rebellious nature and can take it out on people with more experience than them who are only trying to mean well and help them not fall into the same potholes and level up their skill faster. Keep up the great work and don’t let what others on the internet say get you down!

    Maybe numbers would explain your expectations of a professional program. Like what is max layers of Photoshop compared to Procreate? And what else?

    • @divyasoup
      @divyasoup 2 месяца назад

      There is no real maximum on Photoshop. It really depends on your computer's functionality, but there is no hard limit. The program will slow down, however it will not prevent you from creating more layers. Similarly, you are not limited with your canvas size. Procreate has a point where increasing canvas size lowers your layers significantly. I have the iPad Pro 2022 model, which is extremely powerful for a tablet, and the limitations are pretty extensive once you get into higher DPI (300, 600) and larger canvas sizes (A5 and larger, I believe). This is a pretty severe setback, even if the reasoning is for smooth runtime with Procreate. I think there are a lot of smaller details that cause issues too, like the fill tool and the transform tool. Both are finicky and have limited settings. The transform tool lowers the quality of the object transformed significantly, while the fill tool can only apply itself in certain situations and cannot be edited. The animation assist tool is super limited, which is fine because Procreate Dreams exists now, however it's also a disappointing app to me, so it's not a good fix there. Overall the differences are up to individual preferences. I do not appreciate the limitations that Procreate has, so I use Clip Studio Paint on my iPad, a program I also use on my laptop. All this being said, these limitations prevent Procreate from reaching the standard status that professional programs have.

  • @dplj4428

    QUESTION: Is having multiple faces a key and then, does Procreate's Page Assist and Animation Assist qualify it as "professional"?

    • @divyasoup
      @divyasoup 2 месяца назад

      Sorry, I'm not understanding the question. What do you mean by faces? Like different capabilities? Because if so, then no, I don't think that's necessary. It's more that Procreates functions are comparably rudimentary when compared to programs that are more robust, like Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint.

  • @dplj4428
    @dplj4428 2 месяца назад

    Yes, you are correct. Procreate is for both, beginners and professionals. A lean interface on a program whose more powerful tools wait behind that lean looking tool set. Easy on the eye, but powerful if you want that. In Savage International's guides, they explain the settings and limitations of color, layers, and resolution. That informs us that best performance is on more capable iPads, not all generations. I'm looking forward to Procreate's continued polishing. Perhaps even a Mac version. But ideally, my preference is with a greatly improved iPadOS. I did not like the cost of computer, display and a drawing pad.

    • @divyasoup
      @divyasoup 2 месяца назад

      I'm not sure they'll ever get to a Mac version, as they've shown no interest and the app would have to be completely revamped! My best guess is they will continue to work on the app for a very long time, but unless they make significant build changes, I don't think it can be worked on indefinitely.

    I’ve made art using Procreate multiple times, and having also used Photoshop and Illustrator I would consider it (structurally) on par with those programs. Saying anything isn’t a professionally used program requires professionals to not use that program in their work, which for Procreate, many do. The logic that it was made with beginners in mind and thus cannot be updated to be, or be used by good artists is inherently self-defeating.

    • @mangoman1177
      @mangoman1177 3 месяца назад

      You also mention that it “does not look like a professional program.” Procreate has a very simplified UI, it’s done that way 1: to make it more approachable for beginners and 2: to reduce the amount of clutter on screen, providing a more streamlined user experience. Whether or not you like it is a different question, but having used Procreate and Photoshop extensively in multiple projects, most of what you have in photoshop is in some form within Procreate. (Aside from the tools designed for photo editing and manipulation) You also say that because it’s an IPad program it’s somehow not professional..? What do you mean here, a lot of professional artists and animators use tablets to make the process of digital art closer to traditional pen and paper art. I don’t see how this point changes anything.

    • @divyasoup
      @divyasoup 3 месяца назад

      @@mangoman1177 I would argue that Procreate cannot achieve a professional level because it's imprisoned itself to be an iPad only software. It's limited itself to being functional on every iPad device, meaning that it's not able to expand beyond the boundaries of what an iPad is capable of doing (which is absolutely a lot). Photoshop definitely has a myriad of capabilities that Procreate does not, but they're not necessarily used by everyone, so the difference is negligible I want to be clear, professionals can use any program and make professional quality artwork. An iPad does not have the capability to run a program that can be used for professional work in the industry at a level where you would not need to export it to other programs. There are more artist's than just illustrators and animators, and I would argue that the majority of illustrators and animators would prefer a more robust program. Overall, in a one minute short, I cannot really get into the nuances and different cases in which this isn't true. What I am firm in saying is that Procreate advertises itself as a program made for beginners and professionals, which is not accurate, because it's a counterpoint. Photoshop is inherently created for photo manipulation, the fact that you can draw in Photoshop does not make Procreate a similar product in any way. The point is simply that Procreate is not something used substantially enough in professional environments for it to be considered a "professional" program. I have seen a lot of artists consider Procreate the best art program ever, which limits their own abilities to try and learn new programs. It's, in my opinion, very disheartening and worrying to see people using only one program and considering it the best out there.

      @@divyasoup people say the same thing about Adobe, affinity, and CSP, to name a few. I have always been careful to say that procreate is the best program *for me*. My use case is making art while being a father, so I don’t have time to sit at my desk and use my tablet monitor. Also, there are many use cases where procreate is all the artist needs. I’m thinking of people who make small things like stickers and Etsy products. There’s a lot of users out there who have found a way to make their art without paying subscription fees and for an expensive pen display. And there are just as many people who do the same with a Wacom bamboo tablet and a laptop. There’s many different people out there, and I don’t understand why you’d use a limiting minute-long format to talk about such a big issue/pov.

      @@JakeTheLateCreates I believe you have inherently misunderstood the point of my video, I would appreciate it if you actually asked a question before just making a confusing comment. Clip Studio Paint was previously Manga Studio, which was still widely used as a professional manga, comic, and illustration program worldwide. I'm not sure why you asked me this question either.

      @@divyasoup I was curious if you knew the history, that’s all. I was in art school when they were demoing Manga Studio. We all got beta licenses and freaked out about it. As to your point, if I didn’t understand it I’d like it if you clarified. What I took away was that you believe that Procreate isn’t a professional art program because it wasn’t created with professionalism in mind.

    • @divyasoup

      @@JakeTheLateCreates So objectively speaking, Procreate is not a professional program. It is really fantastic for illustration and sketching, but it's extremely limited due to it being on an iPad. Procreate has layer limitations, canvas size limitations, the limitation of being capable for every iPad, no matter the GPU or RAM, and it has a lot of smaller issues that are more personal than objective. I find that it's a great app and people can absolutely do a bulk of their work on it, even professional work, but it's missing a lot of tools and functions that would make it a "professional program." This doesn't mean that it's a bad program, just that it isn't technically a professional one. Professional programs tend to have an extreme amount of tools and be used for multiple different things, like with Photoshop being used for photo-manipulation, drawing, and also simple animation. Obviously it's main purpose is for photo-editing, but it has excess capabilities to ensure it's not forcing people to move elsewhere. Clip Studio Paint has all the tools for comics, which is it's intended purpose, but can be used for large frame-by-frame animation (in EX) and has an extensive illustration capability. It also offers vector capability, which is definitely not needed. Overall, Procreate is incredibly powerful, but it is a highly limited program and doesn't have the capabilities that you would expect from a professional program, regardless of whether you use all those features. In no way is my video meant to suggest that Procreate cannot be used by professionals or even used in a professional setting, just that it is not actually a professional program. I hope that clarifies things further, thanks.

    • @JakeTheLateCreates
      @JakeTheLateCreates 3 месяца назад

      Okay, I think I get it. I don’t agree that it’s not a professional program, as I feel that your definition is too restrictive. Plenty of programs and tools can be tailor-made for a specific purpose and still be considered “professional”. I do agree that Procreate is squarely targeted at illustration and painting, but that doesn’t prevent it from being a professional app. I’ve spoken with the devs, and they told me that the layer limit is to keep the app running smoothly, and I appreciate it. I’ve tried similar canvas sizes in other applications on the iPad and they all start to cubit, but for procreate it takes a truly big canvas an a large brush size to get to that point. I definitely agree that limiting themselves to iOS devices sucks and limits their growth potential, but that’s to keep the development costs down.

    I'm not gonna lie to you, this video opened by accident as I was flicking through tabs on m my computer and I am very greatful for it. I want to improve in a lot of areas of my artistic capabilities. I've discovered Sketches of Shaye recently (a few months ago) and they have altered my brain chemistry and encourage me to also pursue my cowboy shaped dreams. I've been struggling a lot with maintaining my energy when I draw. I do studies and often feel discouraged, either because I have done fundamentals so much it's become monotonous, or it doesn't look like I've improved since my last study (mostly both). I have too much ambition to give up though, despite my frequent down days <3

      Keep going!!! I mentioned combining studies with your personal interests because it's so easy to get bored or disillusioned with them. I'm so glad you liked the video, even if it was just an accidental click, lol! Art almost always feels like a struggle, but I think the end result and enjoyment is well worth it.

    Helping others improve is a tough thing. On one hand you dont wanna fill their heads with rainbows because they might not improve. On the other, if youre too harsh they might give up. Tis why not every teacher is right for every student. Everyone learns differently and needs something different.

    When drawing a hand, I find it easiest to draw the basic shapes first. This is to let me get the size and proportions right. That's how I would tackle such a project. I don't think I'll be able to draw like that because, if I did, then my shapes would come out totally unproportional.

    • @divyasoup
      @divyasoup 3 месяца назад

      Super fair. I do that too sometimes. I'm used to doing underpaintings and using oil paint, so my technique is coming from there. I definitely struggle with proportion too, which is why I'm this is a reference study! Gotta get that practice in !
