Lots of misinfo in these comments 1: he never got surgery, he had chronic inflammation & fatigue of the vocal folds from exhaustion touring plus over consumption of substances during that period. The booze, ketamine and others just compounded on the fatigue due to proper rest of the voice not occuring consistently. The substances he used increase dehydration & other aspects of tour burn-out. He actually DOES sound healthy here, but he isnt in top-form or totally disciplined it seems. His fry sounds exactly like he is dehydrated partially & lacks some control over the fry itself leading to voice cracks and harsh overtones that consistent support and laryngial posture prevents. You can tell he improved on the record after this but on Suicide Season he just sounds less skilled. 2: his technique isnt and wasnt unique. Its just Vocal Fry like many screamers use, as well as Singers, fry is very useful and versatile. Every persons fry sounds different due to it using your personal vocal folds. Normally fry has a brighter and sparklier sounding distortion, more of a loud sandpaper effect vs his more coarse effect. Fry sounds more and more coarse and less intense as the folds tire and the tissue loses hydration. His highs and lows are a full fry, nearly totally closing the folds while his shouts are a mixture of applying falsetto to the fry itself while keeping the folds partially open to let the voice color the fry. Using fry incorrectly would be attemtping to vocalize normally while also employing the fry posture/position OR applying too much support and pressure while using fry that leads to over exertion of the larynx, pharynx, and jaw as well as decreasing breath control. None of which he is doing here although HE DOES make that mistake in videos of their old shows. Trying to push his fry while using too much pressure and air to try and maintain volume/projection. That leads to inflammation from the muscles being overused which leads to damage over months and years. Fry is very safe otherwise, its hard to fuck it up. Fry is produced by starting to close the folds & applying a light pressure while moving as little air as possible through them. To make a fry, flex your abdomen, hold that flex and try to speak with your shoulders totally relaxed. That gravelly sound is the basis of fry screaming. At first the fry will be very quiet and you wont be able to easily project it as you lack anatomical development of the muscles this engages as well as the muscle memory of its use but with time that will change. A few months of proper technique & practice should have you sounding like a normal fry user & less like the girl from the Grudge. Fry has a low to medium level of volume and it cant reach the volume of something like full-range singing although it gets close. At first you will be quiet. Healthy fry has a speech-level volume however advanced forms are a bit louder as they combine the singing voice. The advanced forms of fry such as the 'compression fry' of someone like Chester Bennington and Oli Sykes is hard to learn & requires singing skill + fry development however normal Lows/Mids/Highs are far easier and use 3 basic jaw/tongue/mouth positions you will naturally find out as you practice the sound. Screaming is all breath support and mouth/tongue shapes, the basics are anyways. Good luck.
