Bought this Car CHEAP. Worth $7,000? How??

Finally picked up these new bumpers for the S40. I was afraid that by the time I had a weekend free to go get them, they'd have been picked already. thankfully the whole car was pretty much intact. I may snag a few more parts from it in the future. #mechanic #diy #volvo #repairs #awd

Nice! Stumbled upon your vlogs, after I just bought myself an almost exact same car: a 2002 2.3 T5 manual that needs some TLC as well.
@ralph6115 congrats on the purchase! If you need any advice on anything, please reach out! My IG handle is @carsandchris and you can just send me a message. Most of the stuff I've done on the car I was able to figure out via RUclips videos. People like 1A auto, TRQ, etc, have tons of videos on repairs. I've bought parts from either RockAuto, FCP Euro, or IPDUSA.
You only do that when you're racing and to maximise grip on the turn. On an understeering car it's meant to add a bit of oversteer to help the car turn. You see this often with kart racers who don't have a lot of weight on the front, so less grip, the sawing motion helps add a slight amount of oversteer.
Issue is, he's doing this on a public road with a clear lack of an understanding of how vehicles work. He's endangering everyone else with his stupidity
@@CarsandChris yeah! And on double yellow too. Also it doesn't help much on road tires so he's just getting patches on his tread lol

Next time this happens - get your vacuum cleaner and a thinner hose that fits in spark plug hole.
@user-rs5sf8bg2c I didn't get a chance to explain that in the video but that was one of the things I tried. I found a camelbak and took the hose from that and duct taped it to my shop vac. Was unable to fish the piece out after about half an hour of trying.

Actually it doesn't matter if you bought this car for $100......By the time you fix it up you could be into it for $10,000 these cars cost so much to maintain.......😢😮😢
Not really. I'm not paying a dealership to do the work. Parts are pretty cheap and available. Been great so far
That is so very true. Even more so if you live in Canada where you can't find many auto wreckers with Volvo's in them, or parts stores that don't gouge you for new parts, so you have to import from the USA which almost doubles the cost after you factor in currency exchange, shipping costs, brokerage fees, and taxes.
@@wilschnella1202 I find Volvos at junkyards all the time here in Southern California. And parts stores are easy and cheap to buy replacements from
@@CarsandChris You are fortunate to live in a rust-free Volvo paradise! Where I am in the Great White North, Volvo's aren't quite as plentiful here.
@@CarsandChris Well I have a different volvo .....a 2010 S 80 turbo 6 cyl ....I have had it for 2 years and it cost so much to maintain ...I have spent $4000 so far and I'm not done ......the maintenance is ridiculous on this car
10/10 build in my opinion. I would do the exact same to my vehicle for the exact same reasons, EXCEPT I would do drivetrain RELIABILITY mods like a baffled oil pan and the like. You do not want starvation issues during corner acceleration.
Actually the S550 comes with a baffled oil pan from the factory! So no issues there
Maybe it isn´t such a bad idea to get a set of metric sockets and wrenches, if you're doing this all the time.
I have like 3 sets of metric and standard sockets. This particular drain plug just happens to be a size larger than all 3 of my sets except for one of the standard socket sets. This was a one-off situation where instead of going to the parts store I just used what I had.
Damn! What a steal for $1600. You could lowered the suspension for a bit tho
Thank you! I don't want to lower the suspension because I intend to sell it as stock
Thanks for help :) I made 80k km on my S40 and it's time to change oil in transmission :)

Did you reset the transmission with Vida software?
It's not an automatic.
There is nothing to reset if it's a manual..
Even the cheap rock auto parts are better than Amazon 😂
Exactly why I made this video. Too many people got into the habit of ordering stuff from Amazon and they keep getting screwed

Rockauto is the only reason my Camaro ever made it off the cinder blocks. They’re great
I ordered an entire project worth of parts on rock auto and half of them were defective out of box. 2 of the parts were the entirely wrong part
This sounds like user error to me
@@CarsandChris Explain to me how parts that are damaged out of the box comes down to user error
@@JonLasaga what did you do to resolve the situation? Did you report it? Did you get a refund?
@CarsandChris refunded and ordered all of my parts through oreillys and Napa. The two parts that were the wrong part got returned first as I ordered everything a couple weeks ahead of starting. They sent back the wrong part again so I refunded it all after finding most of the parts were defective when I started working
Rockauto only messed one item up for me but i always buy from them if my local auto parts store doesnt have it in stock
Local parts stores always overprice parts. Plan ahead and save
@CarsandChris yea but when I need the part ASAP that's the best action to take. Rockauto has ridiculous overnight shipping prices.
@KilahertzOfficial if you need parts immediately you should be going to a local parts store.

They seriously need to upgrade there website, like it's inexcusable for a company in 2024 to have a website that looks like it came out in 2012, which if I'm not mistaken. Is when rock auto first rolled out that version of the website
Nothing wrong with the site, it's clear, functional, and easy to navigate.... no reason to waste time and money to put lipstick on it.
@@Turbo2Pete Yeah, but it's an absolute eyesore plus some people actually don't think that dont it's a legitimate site because of its dated look, which is an actual concern, I genuinely know people who have never seen any rock auto, commercials or when they do see them and they click the link, they think they. Yes they are! I love them. Great dual purpose tire. Great on track, great in the dry, great in the wet. Quieter than the Advan Sport V105s I had before. Highly recommend, especially for the price. 4 tires for me is under $1,000

I will tell you brother you are about to enter a lovely journey of Volvo modding there's a surprising amount of support. the best thing you can do though would be to put in a polyurethane engine mounts and subframe bushings wherever possible and take out any slack in the drive train.
Heck yeah, mint spec. Excited to see the build progress 💪
What makes it so sought after?
The 6 speed manual was a rare option for most mid-2000s Volvos. Couple that with AWD and you have both fun and utility in the same package. And with how small it is, it's a very zippy car.
Hey! I think I bought a set of wheels off of you! Thanks again!
I think you did too! Haha nice to meet you and happy you found my videos!
Ya I want to see the before pictures. If it was trashed or especially if it had mold or mildew in it then $200 wouldn't be close to enough. $600- $1000+ with mold. That is a big job and not just anyone can do it. Everything has to be pulled out of the car seats, carpet, padding, etc. You need the right PPE such as respirators, facemask, full PPE suit, etc. You have to use the right things to kill mold, like vinegar with a wet dwell time of at least an hour. Everything has to be bone dry before going back into the car. You thinking that a $200 DETAIL would get rid of MOLD is on you. Everyone knows that mold remediation is not cheap, and you didn't go that route. You went cheap.
Let me clarify a few things. 1. The car was not "left open to the elements and soaked with water for 14 years" moldy. It sat mostly unused for 4 years fully sealed and parked on the street. When air is not regularly circulated, mold tends to form in any scenario. That's what happened here. It wasn't awful nor was it really visible at all. Any normal person wouldn't have noticed. I'm not normal. I'm allergic and it makes my asthma flare up. 2. I clarified with the detail shop that I wanted to treat mold and they clarified they'd steam and treat it with vinegar. They quoted me the $200 fully knowing what was needed. That was their decision not mine. All I wanted was the basics to be completed and they weren't. I showed you what they missed. It was elementary.
Sorry bro !!! You had a bad experience and that sucks!!! I am a life long detailer and communication for a professional is everything !!! The way you describe your truck condition as a professional….i won’t even get out of bed for 200 so what do you expect for that price point !!! On something you probably have to use some hazmat suits
It definitely wasn't hazmat situation. It wasn't full of trash nor was it filthy. It just needed to be steamed
"IF" you have to ask, you don't really need to know!
Rude
@@CarsandChris thanks for such kind words!
@@CarsandChris it was meant as a joke! but some people these days!!!!
Totally agree with you, it seems like pride and craftsmanship are going the way of the dinosaur
I feel for you, dude. People should take pride in what they do. Even though I think $200 was too small an amount to charge for the kind of detail required on your vehicle, it doesn't even look like you got $50 worth of a detail. And what the tire shop did to your wheels is a crime.
It's always better to be pointed out just incase of emergencies especially in the forest. It's a hell of a lot quicker to leave when you're backed in.
That's why they require it at refineries
200 dollar for a full detail and mold disinfecting was you're first mistake that's way to cheap to charge
Clean the car yourself and have more respect for what you do have. 200 dollars can buy a lot of cleaning supplies and also cleaning a car is not that difficult.
The man had mold inside his vehicle didn't you listen to him he can't clean it himself 🤦♂️
You can’t detail a car professionally for $200 by yourself.😂. Quality extractor = $800. Quality steamer = $250. Air compressor = $300. Chemical = $20. That’s not counting brushes, vacuum, air guns, drill, drill brushes, or experience. I charge $165 for an interior cleaning plus $10 per seat that is extracted. Plus I charge an extra $50 for mold. My total for that truck would have been $265 for the interior. However what he received is a completely shitty job. Not worth $100. Also should never promise to get every spot because sometimes you just can’t get something. I tell all of my customers I will remove 90-95% of everything in the vehicle but this detail was not worth the money he paid.
he just wants to whine
@@Mark_Shreds_Fatyeah, but you don't need a "professional" extractor to do a good job. People can get away with a +2HP 13-15amp shopvac with an extractor attachment and a drill/bottle of cleaner. As the old saying goes you can get 80% of the value with only 20% of the time or money. It's the law of diminishing returns. With the right knowledge and inexpensive tools you can clean your own car to a professional level with just a few tools. You can easily spend less than $500 for tools or less depending if you have some of these things already for mechanical/garage use like drills/shop vacs/compressors. People can get away with a $80 pressure washer. Assessories and other minor tools will bring you close to $300-500 especially if your starting from scratch. Also, video author, $200 doesn't get you much for detailing. This isn't minimum wage work.
@@Mark_Shreds_Fat Detail Geek used the Bissel Spotpro $120 for the longest time, as do many other detail startups or non-pros but yes, sorry to butt in.
This is how I see it, easier to drive away, some people prefer to drive off quicker than to arrive and park up quicker, also, what's weird is that reversing out a space seems trickier than it is pulling into it, like you can swing into a space driving forwards pretty easily, then when you reverse out, it seems like you're taking longer in case you hit whatever is next to you.... Which doesn't make sense to me since you'll usually use the same amount of steering long to drive into the space as you will backing out of it.... Idk, I don't see the kerb but being the issue in parking.... Unless you drive too close to it and kerb your rims
You have better situational awareness backing up when arriving. Most up to date info of what is around you and whats coming your way
it's also just easier and faster to get out of the parking spot aswell
Actually try geometry for reversing in is better and it’s safer to pull out forward
Because backing out of parking spaces is more dangerous.
