I've got a duel gas furnace and heat pump, and I've got 8 wires coming out of the wall, that were hooked up to the existing/old Honeywell thermostat. With the ecobee premium instructions, i only see clear details on what to do with 5 of the wires... Any suggestions? I've looked & looked for a video of someone who has a heat bump, installing this ecobee premium, but have been unable to find an installation instruction video.
With the Honeywell you probably had at least 2 of the wires that were to an outdoor temp probe. you would have also had the emergency and aux wires separate. If it is a duel fuel heat pump you should need at least a 24 v wire, a common, yellow or hp contactor, W for aux heat, G for the fan, and O or B for the reversing valve. And the premiums that we have installed have connections for all of those, I have not seen one with only 5 connections.
Hi. I looked at my ecobee screen for the wiring, and it shows the same as your video except for the Y1 is not highlighted in mine. I have a HP and my auxiliary backup is a boiler for hot water baseboard heating. My HP is not switching to my boiler backup even when outside temperature is in the teens or single digits, when it’s supposedly set to switch to backup if below 30F. Could the lack of Y1 wiring be the issue? Thanks in advance!
Hi may I ask is there a setting for certain time for heatpump and gas furnace??? I would like to set heatpump run 7pm-7ambecause electricity 50% 7pm-7am, and use gas furnace 7am-7pm because gas cheaper 7am-7pm??? Thank you
Thank you for your very informative video! It makes me hopeful that I can get my Ecobee working more efficiently with my new system. I'm a home owner and just replaced my old old gas furnace system with a dual fuel system last spring. I had already installed an Ecobee 3 Lite several years ago and it works great with Alexa and my small home. However, now it isn't behaving as I'd expect with the gas side (Aux) of the equation. I live in southern Oregon where the night temps in December & January are often in the 20's F. Warms up to 40's in the day. The Aux is running a lot of the time even though I've set the thresholds to 30 - 35 F. It's 37 and Aux is still running. My installer is knowledgeble but says that he's found with Ecobee thermostats, they never work right with dual systems. He says that with the Goodman thermostat (I have a Goodman system) he can program it exactly to what the home owner wants and it does exactly that. So, my question #1 is whether this is true or not. I'm hoping that the Ecobee 3 lite can be programmed to work more efficiently with my lovely new system. Question #2 is whether I must get a new Ecobee to make it work correctly or if indeed, I need an non-smart thermostat. Question #3 is do I dare reset the system so I can go through the entire set up again to make sure all the correct settings are in place? I know this is long and you are not getting paid for this advice. ☺ I'm just hoping you can point me in the right direction.Thank you again.
Goodman does not make a thermostat, he is probably buying either a Honeywell or White Rogers or some other brand from a distributor that puts a Goodman name on them. We have had great experience with Ecobees on duel fuel. my guess is that your closest weather station is a few degrees lower than where you are. My threshold on my duel fuel is actually set at 25 so you might try setting it a little lower.
Hi, great video. I have a heatpump (bosch) on furnace (rheem) and ecobee. The auxiliary heat has been on for a few days. The outside temp at mid night is around 25 to 30F. Is that wrong? I heard auxiliary heat should not be on. Thanks.
Depending on what temp you set on the compressor lockout the aux heat will run any time it is below that setting. But it is common for aux to be on below 30
Thanks. Mine was set at 40. I changed to 30. It is still a mystery why it turned on cause it was 45 the day before yesterday.Good thing it did not happen last night.
Needs a wired outdoor sensor. Alot of times the Internet connection is not reliable. I really wish this thermostat had a wired sensor option for dual fuel lockout setpoint.

Hey Bill! This video is/was very helpful as I'm just starting to graduate to installing dual fuel systems even though I felt I could figure it out,. Glad I didn't have to, lol. Just curious though, you don't recommend hooking up W2 to thermostat for defrost mode (possibly) or would that be too much for the system to handle being set up for a dual fuel situation? Certainly welcome your input!
@@TheMurraywc Thanks for responding. Just or clarity, you're saying I wouldn't need to hook up the W2 from the heat pump condenser to W in this set up, it would already automatically turn on gas heat in defrost (if above 35 degrees) or below 35 degrees if ecobee 3 lite is set up that way?
Bill, Why do you choose for the furnace and not the stat to control the fan. By choosing furnace isn’t this preventing to homeowner to choose options like AUTO and CIRC from the stat?
That is only while it is running in aux or em heat. You can use either but you will get a couple of minutes of cold air while the heat exchanger gets up to temp
Not sure why that would be. It will normally come on after a period of tstat reading 3 degree below set temp or anytime outdoor temp is below threshold but must be hooked to wifi to read from nearest weather station
Is it possible to override the heat pump as the primary source of heat and to switch to gas heat on the Ecobee after this is setup? If so, how would you go about doing this?
@@jplee3 No that will not work. the heat pump is most efficient above 30 degree and the gas is more efficient so I see no scenario where that would be beneficial so they do not have a set up for that.
@@TheMurraywc Thanks. In terms of the actual wiring between your heatpump, gas furnace, and t-stat, how did you run the O or O/B wire? In my case, there's an O wire coming off the heatpump (currently this is tied in with the Y wires at the heatpump), but there's no terminal for O or O/B on the furnace. Ecobee support is saying you can run the O wire directly from the heatpump to the thermostat - is that what you had to do in this case?
i have mine set to 35 threshold but it uses aux at 36, 37, 38. am i missing something? also always get the warning from them that aux is being used too much.
If you are connected to the internet it reads from closest weather station. It can also turn it on if your house needs more, if it drops 3 degrees in the house.
Good afternoon, I just replaced my heat pump with an American Standard dual fuel system. I have the Ecobee 4 thermostat that I want to reuse with the new dual fuel system. The HVAC contractor is saying it’s not compatible. However Ecobee told me it is and I really would like to use it instead of buying a new stat. I live just outside if Raleigh NC.
If you have a single stage oil furnace I'm not sure why you would have a W1 and W2, make sure that the oil back up is tied to the W1 and go through the set up. This one is for units that have a reversing valve that energizes in the cool mode. Check your unit to make sure yours does.

Hello, my heat pump has heat strips as auxiliary. Can i lock the strips out so they dont come on at all until I turn the auxiliary heat on?
You should be able to just disable where it asks for aux and hp to run together. then disable on the next step for temp setting

Not that I am aware of but if you connect it to your phone there may be a setting for that in the app.

No option that I know of for that but it would still be more efficient to use HP above 35 degree.
Do you need outdoor sensors?
No you do not. It will work best though if connected to the internet so that it can get the latest data from your closest weather station.

That would be more accurate but this system works pretty well especially if you are near a local weather station

Your outside unit turns on the furnace during defrost. The w2 on this tstat is if you have a 2 stage aux heat

Yes you can
Does this work with two zones? Will two eco bees work together? If I have a 2022 premium will it work with a lite?
@@mtmusic9608 not as far as I know
I have two zones dual fuel both have ecobee and the only way aux runs is if I do it manually. Thresholds all set properly

When you follow this set up all you have to do to change to gas is select Aux as your system, that will turn off the heat pump and run the gas.
