The Making of Zero X Reimagined
Просмотров 6627 месяцев назад
This is a brief introduction to the techniques I used to make the Zero X Assembly Procedure Reimagined film. Zero X being the star guest vehicle from the Thunderbirds Are Go movie from 1966. This isn't a CG tutorial, just a glimpse behind the scenes. I had a lot of interest in how I made the film, so I thought I'd create this mini doc to explain.
Zero X Assembly Procedure Reimagined! Compressed

In 1966 the movie version of the Thunderbirds TV show hit the big screen. It opened with a lengthy launch sequence for one of the greatest guest vehicles in the Thunderbirds universe - the Zero X Martian Space Vehicle. I decided to do my own version of the launch, using CG modelling and production. I decided not to update the ship itself much, but everything else gets a thorough make-over. This...

    Stunning bit of work!! - the hardware looks great and I reckon the various assembly sequences in your version look more mechanically plausible than some of those in the original movie (never understood why they needed to have the whole hangar for the main body retract when the vehicle itself was on wheels). Can we see more please?

    • @NeMoWorks
      @NeMoWorks 20 дней назад

      Many thanks for your comment. Very much appreciated. Yeah, I also struggled with that hangar slide back. Also the flimsy rail for loading LB1. So the redesign was intended to both actually work and also be ludicrously over the top in true Anderson style. There will be more. I'm moving over to Unreal Engine for rendering and creation so these films should get a bit quicker!

      Hey Matthew - getting there. I'm working on this full length Steampunk musical at the same time and its a big job. I have about half the footage I need for the next bit of Zero X. But I'm also switching over to using Unreal Engine for rendering. This means moving a bunch of assets across which is a headache. Once I'm full in Unreal I can make these things much faster. But it is on the way, Promise.

    I have to wonder if it could or should dock with another long range propulsion unit as it has a long way to get to mars on one body and no extra fuel docked too it - but maybe those Nuclear Rocket engines are just that good ? If It was me designing it now I'd have it deploy a 2km solar sail and get pushed on its way by a pulse laser assistance too.

    I'm of two minds about you removing the nosecone from this. One part says that, since it as jettisoned almost immediately, then there was no real point to it so I'm okay with you dumping it entirely. The other half makes me think that without it, there's something missing from the overall look to the ship. Also, it seems like it could have had a serious purpose, acting as a "cow catcher" against meteors in space that the Zero X might encounter, but that doesn't seem to have occurred to the original THUNDERBIRDS production team so never mind.

      I built the whole thing in Cinema 4D. I then rendered it out in Octane - which is a very lengthy task. Sometimes taking 20 mins per frame. At 30 frames a second that takes days. I might do something with UFO. If you look carefully at the opening shot you'll see a Markers Universal truck which was the vehicle that secretly moved Shado Mobiles to their destinations. Anyway, glad you like the work - more will follow.

    Thank you so much for this. I remember going to the cinema with my mum to watch the original, and I loved it so much we stayed for a second showing (mum probably didn't want to). I've got it on DVD now and this assembly sequence I have played over and over, it's the most exciting part of the whole movie, with of course Barry Gray's brilliant music. The new Thunderbirds series did not understand what was a big part of the excitement of the original series, and that was the machines. It's great the way you have changed it to make the equipment more realistic. One of the things that makes me laugh about the original is that instead of moving the main body of Zero-X out of the building they move the whole building away from Zero-X. 😀 Sorry but some criticisms, criticisms which apply to all CGI, not just yours. CGI hasn't really conquered things like suspension and wobble properly yet. It makes their movement look stiff. When big machines like that come to a stop or start, they rock on their suspension. You watch an airplane stop, even from moving slowly, such massive tonnage will rock a bit. It's these little details that make it more real. Also, when getting going from stop the acceleration will be very slow at first. That little tractor would not be able to accelerate so quickly pulling such a weight. Even Zero-X using its own power would start off very slowly from stop, it's those few seconds from stop that are important. Anyway, other than those issues which apply to CGI in general, it was brilliant. Well done.

    • @NeMoWorks
      @NeMoWorks 5 месяцев назад

      Hi Richard, many thanks for your comment. I'm glad you appreciate the work. I agree with you that weight and inertia are tricky to recreate using CG. I think I succeeded where things like the suspension on the wheels has a slight weight compression. But getting the inertia of starting and stopping convincing is a tricky one. Anyway, something to aim for. There is more Zero X and Thunderbirds Reimagined material coming from me soon, so keep an eye out.

    • @richardarcher3435
      @richardarcher3435 5 месяцев назад

      @@NeMoWorks Yes it's all a learning curve. I'd love to have a go but don't have the software. Another thing I forgot about, one of the things that always ruins a space movie for me is portraying sound in space. That's one of the things that for me really brought 2001: A Space Odyssey to life and made it exciting even though the action was extremely slow, I was riveted because I felt I was really out there in space. I think your Zero-X had left the atmosphere before its engines switched off. If you do aim to do any space shots I think it would be nice if you tried to portray space as it really is. The film Gravity managed it aswell. Anyway, good luck with your next project.
