The Su-57 is still in further development. They’re testing out 2 new engines for it, one has a flat nozzle and the other a serrated nozzle. Both nozzles will make the aircraft much stealthier. The Felon also has the potential for 6th generation technologies. Beautiful edit BTW.

So to clean up some of the more whacky comments here I felt free to search up some information online about the aircraft ranging from the first public tests of the first prototype, to the combat testing in Syria, start of the serial production, delays in the development of the Izdelyie 30 engines and current tests of the Su-57M. However first I'd like to say that the edit was pretty enjoyable and I'm glad RUclips recommended it to me, one of the few good recommendations lol. So anyway, the most common misconception is that the Su-57 has allegedly the RCS (radar cross section) of an F/A-18E/F. That's not correct for a couple reasons. First of all the Su-30SM2, Su-35 and Su-30MKK come already close to that, without utilizing several manufacturing methods of the Su-57. The Su-57 uses physical structures in the intakes to block radar waves returning from the compression blades. This style of system has also been used by the F-117. If that will be kept with the Izdelyie 30 is not known, but it's likely. The Su-57s canopy has a conductive coating of an Indium-alloy. Most stealth aircraft utilize such coatings, for example the F-22, F-35 or B-2. The B-2 actually uses a gold coating if I remember correctly, I'm not sure though. The Su-57 utilizes more composite material than previous Sukhoi models. Composites are not only lightweight and rather durable, they can also help to reduce the RCS. The Su-57 uses LEVCONS instead or canards, the LEVCONS are the moving surfaces above the intakes. Canards have no huge impact on the RCS however they require clever software solutions to minimize radar return, the Eurofighter Typhoon does it that way and it has the lowest RCS of any 4th generation aircraft. However LEVCONS are a much simpler solution that offer arguably the same benefits. The IRST on the nose of the Su-57 can rotate back to reveal an RAM (radar absorbant material) coated surface when not in use. Overall the Su-57 has a rather small profile from the front, which is not surprising as the aircraft was optimized to reduce the RCS from the front the most, due to budget constraints. For example the F-22 was designed with all aspect stealth in mind. The most notable feature of the Su-57 and one of the things that have to be improved upon are the engines. Currently it uses the AL-41 engines, an improved version of the engines used by the Su-35. However the intended engines are the Izdelyie 30 (Project 30), they feature moving nozzles as well, but more power, the ability to supercruise (reach supersonic speed without afterburner and sustaining supersonic flight) and the nozzles are made out of ceramic composites and feature a serrated edge, similar to the F-35, to reduce the infrared and radar signature of the engines. Furthermore the stats about the RCS many sources cite are from the 2017 patents of the first T-50 prototype. However over the years the materials in use changed in certain areas and the Su-57 got an RAM coating too. Rough estimates range from 0.1m² front aspect RCS to 0.01m² front aspect RCS. For comparison the Eurofighter has 0.5m² and the F-22 something around 0.0001m². These are obviously estimates from outside sources, only the respective manufacturers know the true RCS. But all in all the Su-57 is by all means a 5th generation aircraft and considering its the first such aircraft coming from Sukhoi its not a bad debut by any means. Many of the things I said also apply to the J-20, which also gets criticized a lot by people based on online headlines from questionable sources. Are the Su-57 or J-20 on par with the F-22? No. They have better missiles, but in many regards they lack certain capabilities the Raptor has. But Lockheed has decades of experience, so that should be the case. However the J-20 and Su-57 are more or less the first generation of stealth aircraft for their respective countries, so they just laid the ground work for the following projects. The J-35 and Sukhoi LTS ('Su-75') already look like their manufacturers learned some valuable lessons about design and development. Just like the F-22 and F-35 are the result of decades of refinement. However the Su-57 and J-20 are still 5th generation fighters and because of that they have a massive advantage over all 4th generation jets, except payload obviously (Su-57 and J-20 can only carry 6 missiles internally, the F-22 can carry 8). But just like the F-35 works in tandem with the F/A-18E/F and F-15E/EX, the Su-57 can work with the Su-35 and Su-30SM2. So yeah, each of the aircraft I mentioned above is a marvel of engineering and they all use ingenious ideas to solve unique problems that arrive with their mission profile. Political opinions aside, the Su-57 is a beautiful machine and belongs to the most capable aircraft currently in service (although there are not many of them, compared to over 200 J-20s lol). And that's not up for debate really. Just like how all the people that criticized the F-35 jumped on misleading headlines, it's the same here. However it's for the best interest of every aviation enthusiast to never learn what the *real* capabilities of these aircrafts are.
The Su-57 does not have an S-Duct. That is literally the biggest problem with the plane. The Su-57 is a 4.5 gen, and in it's current state barely qualifies for a 4th gen thanks to it only being armed for air-air engagements externally because there are literally no IWB compatible missiles. The Su-57s RCS is a jump from the flankers - correct. But the only thing the aircraft has going for it is speed and maybe the clown vectoring. The truth is, Russian doctrine is not ready for a 5th gen, they'd have to rewrite their entire strategy for the next 40 years to make it work. Nice try at defending it tho.
@@itstime6974 As I pointed out, it doesn't have an S-Duct as it utilizes radar blockers like the F-117 did. That's part of the reason the aircraft can be so flat. As for the internal weapons bays, they can't use the R-77-1, however the R-77M was designed for internal weapons bays all the way back for the MiG-1.44. After the MiG was canceled the project was dropped, however with the PAK FA on the horizon it was picked up again and while heavily redesigned, it still has the R-77M designation. This is the primary BVRAAM of the Su-57 and fully compatible with the IWB of the aircraft. The other ordnance the Su-57 carries, which it indeed carries on the outside is the R-37. However the nature of that missile and the mission profile of use cases for such a missile make the trade off to externally carry that missile worth it. By all metrics presented the Su-57 is a 5th generation fighter through and through. The truth is that their logistics are not equipped for a full transition from 4th Gen to 5th Gen yet, but that's something that requires time, especially with the monetary constraints they face compared to the PLAAF and the massive J-20 fleet. Also 4.5 Gen is a marketing term used by several manufacturers to set their products apart. However in essence it just describes these aircraft as very advanced 4th generation aircraft. And since the Su-57 exceeds all of the common 4th generation criteria and is more in line with an F-22 than it is with an F-15EX that basically says it all.

It's always just "it will have X in Y years!". The aircraft is a 4.5 gen through and through, it's a flat flanker. And it isn't in line with an F-22, be it the RCS or the inexplicable design decision not to incorporate an S-Duct, the Su-57 is only a marvel because it's made by the same people that made such shit as the MiG-29 and the Su-22. And the bit at the end how "4.5 gens aren't real" read a damn book.
@@itstime6974 I have read several papers and books on the history of military aviation and fighter jet design. 4.5 or 4++ etc are Marketing speech, that's common knowledge. And the Su-57 traded the S-Duct for the similarly effective blockers while also reducing the overall frontal cross section as a consequence. When the Su-57 is a flat Flanker, than the F-35 is a chubby Viper. The Su-57 has the avionics, the internal weapons bays, the radar capabilities and improved data link to qualify it as a 5th generation fighter together with its stealth. As for the R-77M, just like the Su-57 it's in the initial production stage and already fielded with combat units. And the Su-57 wasn't designed by the people that developed the MiG-29 or Su-22. The Fulcrum was designed by the OKB Mikoyan-Gurevich and the Su-22 by a completely different section and generation of the OKB Sukhoi. The Su-57 was developed by a mixture of new people and the people that were involved with the Su-47, Su-37, Su-30 and Su-35. These are the aircraft the Su-57 can trace it's lineage back to. MiG had their own PAK FA proposal, which was not chosen. Your ridiculous attempts to discredit the Su-57 remind me of the old men than try to say that the F-16 is better than the F-35 and that the F-35 is a waste of money. Just illogical accusations that can be proven wrong by basic research.

Fun fact: the plane cannot launch air-to-air munitions internally and it doesn't have the engines it is suppossed to have. On top of that, it has the RCS of a clean Super Hornet.
No aircraft launches air-to-air missiles "internally". They are stored internally, the bay opens, the missiles drops out and launches. That's how the F-22 does it, how the Su-57 does it and how the F-35 does it. Only the J-20 can do it differently, as it can actually close the weapons bay while the missile is held in place outside of the aircraft. And the RCS claim is pure fiction.

@@lovemyself217 The Super Hornet has the smallest RCS of all US 4th Gens. However the Rafale, Eurofighter, Su-30SM2, Su-30MKK, J-16 etc all have similar or smaller RCS. So it's barely a standout and more so the baseline for the second half of the 4th generation.
