5 Great Solo Roll-and-Write Board Games
Excellent video, thank you.
No Spirit Island? That is my #1 solo by a good stretch. I've wanted to try Earth for a while...might look for it used.
I love Cloudage...I got it in 2021 and played it 4 times in 1 day but haven't played it since because I went kind of crazy acquiring games. It is one of my older games that I think about getting to the table frequently. It will definitely happen this year as I've decided to focus on my older games and the nostalgia they bring. I also have had Tiletum for a couple years and have yet to learn or play it. Learning it on top of the solo mode seemed like too much every time I considered it. Also, Wayfarers I learned and had on the table and played a couple turns but life kind of got in the way and I stopped at that and I constantly think about getting it to the table again.
I had almost the same experience as you with Wayfarers, set it all up, read the rules and for some reason just never played it. Good to hear about Cloudage, I need to get that one played!
Can confirm Lands of Galzyr is a fun adventure! Super easy and quick to get to the table once you have your initial game setup (which is also easy). They did a kickstarter for more content this year, not that I’ve gotten close to needing more content but it looks fun 🙃
Great to hear, I'm excited to check it out! I've heard lots of good things!
I also have some in my shelf of O, but the oldest is sherlock holmes consulting detective 😅
Tiletum and Cloudage are also on my pile of sh...., No, I'll rename like you: on my shelf of opportunity! Let's see what we can/want to do in 2025! Thanks for your interesting videos.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully I'll cut down on some of my unplayed games this year.
I'm wondering when we will see a Van Ryder Game; are you a Final Girl or Hostage Negotiator fan?
Now binging on all your other videos !
So pleased to have found your channel, how have I missed it all this time. Such a great list and lots for me to plunge into !
Thanks for checking out the channel! Hope you enjoy the videos!
I used to love board games, but more recently I have lacked other people to play with... but I see i don't need them now. I wasn't aware solo games existed until about three days ago. But, I love the way you present the information and your enthusiasm. I've written your top 50 out to refer to. I'm sure I'll be back to watch your channel for playthroughs and more ideas in future. For now I've already ordered a couple of smaller games to get started with. I particularly like games that you dont need a table for, but there are definitely a few larger ones I have in the back of my mind for the future. Thank you so much for my introduction to solo gaming.
I’m so glad you were able to find solo gaming, and thank you so much for the kind comments! I hope you enjoy playing solo and have fun with the games you’ve picked out. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Thanks for the teach and review. BTW, they are elk, not moose.
You’re really good at talking about games. Keep it up!
WOW! Thanks so much for adding Storyfold: Wildwoods to your most anticipated games for 2025! We can't wait for folks to physically get to take this game for a spin!
Thanks for checking out the video, the game looks really cool!
I’d be curious to see the solo mode for galactic cruise - got to play it at PAXU with 3 others and it was a lot of fun but the player interaction was pretty important
Sounds like you're going to be busy this year! Good Luck!
🤣 Arydia is NOT a legacy game… it’s a adventure Campaign game. You should get more informations before confusing your audience. 😆🙌🏻
While I agree that it seems more like a campaign game, the description on BGG from the publisher calls it a campaign based “green legacy” game, so that’s how I referenced it. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/219650/arydia-the-paths-we-dare-tread
@@SpecificallySolowell that’s basically WRONG. A legacy game alters the game permanently while a campaign game can be played several times after set back to its staring point. This is a mayor difference between those games especially at this price point. So you should point this out because otherwise you will influence significantly a decision to support this game/ developer or not. So please be more precise and thorough before reporting false informations. 😆🤩🙌🏻
Solid list! I've backed Galactic Cruise and am looking forward to getting it. I'm also on the verge of late pledging for Luthier.
Thanks so much for mentioning Galactic Cruise! 🚀
Thanks for watching!
Cool list! There are a couple that I wasn't aware of and others that I'm waiting to see some solo playthroughs and get more information on how it plays. We have one crossover. My most anticipated for this year: 4. Raas: A Dance of Love 3. Luthier (already backed) 2. Galactic Cruise (already backed) 1. South Tigris trilogy expansions (KS launching later this month and will definitely back) Coming of Age seems really cool, too. Design by Dani Garcia, art by Edu Valls, and an engaging theme. But need to see more information on it.
Luthier was almost one I put in my top 10, got to see it set up at Gen Con last year, looks cool!
We have very similar tastes. Dune Imperium is much better solo if you use the "imperial churn" rule where you roll a dice to clear some cards from the market every turn - you see a lot more cards. I'm not sure if Legacy of Yu is in your top 50 but it's a must for any solo Garphill fan. Btw, Garphill is pronounced "gar-fill", as in Shem PHILLips 😊
The Anarchy def looks like a sequel for sure! No anticipation for the Elder Scrolls game from Chip Theory in 2025? That’s my most anticipated for sure
That does look good too! Just missed my list!
Very nice list, thanks!
The problem with lists like these is always the same. 8 out of 10 games here are just solo modes of multiplayer games ...and solo they are NEVER as good as playing it with 3 , 4 , 5 other people.
I agree that the title is misleading. there is at least one game which is a multiplayer game but much better for solo in my opinion and that is imperium (classics/legends/horizons).
Why is that a problem? These are games he is looking forward to playing solo? Doesn't matter that they have alternate ways to play them, does it?
@@frantz2000 because title says solo board games. do you know what solo board games are? they are games that can only be played solo. so title is misleading.
Great list of yours, thanks for sharing. I was looking at Speakeasy but in all honesty, Scarface 1920 gives me pretty much the same setting but with, what seems to me, a much better and customizable solo play. I went with Galaxy Cruise for a Lacerda adjacent experience. While I backed The Dark Quarter, my excitement for it has entirely cooled off. My most anticipated games for solo this year are Arydia, Elder Scrolls and Kingdom Forlorn.
Thanks for watching! Haven’t heard of Scarface 1920, I will have to look into that. And it does feel like the Dark Quarter has been in development for A WHILE.
Voidfall is one of my fav solo games, so I kept a close eye on the Revenant campaign. Sadly, it felt like the solo was an afterthought. In an interview with the designer at Essen, he said he didn't know what the solo would be (red flag). Then they waited to unveil the solo at the end of the campaign. And also, the solo seems quite different from how the competitive would run. So in the end I didn't back it. Hopefully it will be a good solo. But my gut told me it was shoehorned in.
It’s best to just save for the voidfall expansion as that will be purposefully built for solo
Hopefully it’s good, but we will see. I still want to play Voidfall at some point!
Yeah I believe turczi is involved in revenant. He’s the designer who did the solo in Voidfall so I have no doubt revenant will be great solo. Voidfall Stands alone as my favourite solo all time and it hasn’t come close to budging off since I discovered it two years ago Any game you see Turczis name attached to should automatically be in your solo collection. He’s one the best solo designer ever.
@ turczi is not designing the solo for revenant. Allan Kirkeby is doing the solo mode himself and this is his first actual complex board game he has ever designed so I would set your expectations very low for the solo mode
@@miliyn17 if turczi isn’t involved in the revenant solo then my solo expectations will drop significantly
Storyfold Wildwoods intrigues me. I'll have to check it out. This is the first time I am hearing of it. I do have a handful of campaign games to play solo already though. I did back Revenant, hoping it'll be great solo for me. Voidfall sounded awesome and I'll back it when the expansion launches. I just have a hard time getting a feel for a game without my hands on it actually playing a few turns. I don't really find playthrough videos helpful at all during a campaign. Or the virtual rulebook. I do find playthrough videos helpful to clarify very specific rules that come up while I am playing my copy as it is on my table. A lot of these I haven't heard of honestly. I am not sure what my number 1 is this year for solo. Maybe the expansions for Heroes of Might and Magic honestly. I'm really excited for stronghold.
You’re right, some of these are hard to figure out how to play solo, especially if they are crowdfunded and are maybe still in development.
Speakeasy on table + an Old Fashioned in hand = gaming bliss
Seems like the perfect way to play that game.
Great list! Bookmarked a few of these to keep an eye on their progress 😊 Thanks so much 🎉
Thanks for watching!
I backed Floe and Tend as well, very excited for those! I was considering Wildwoods too but didn’t end up pledging. Would love to hear your thoughts on it once you get into it. :)
Hopefully I’ll be able to get my hands on it at some point! It looks really cool!
7, 5 and 4 all firmly on the wishlist, with No. 1 backed and looking forward to getting it ahead of schedule
i just picked this game up! looking forward to getting it played. the worker placement has a Raiders of the North Sea vibe to it.
Oddly enough: my first ever solo game was Friedemann Friese’s Friday. Easy to play Solo-only deck builder, but incredibly challenging to win. These are good picks and have a few of em myself :)
Thanks!
Comment
Interesting top 10. I have to play Obsession. Instead of Architects of the West Kingdom I'd put Viscounts, and instead of Raiders of Scythia I'd pick Raiders of the North Sea
I do like Viscounts, never played the original Raiders of the North Sea, but I need to check that out.
Enjoyable series of videos! It was fun following along. Obsession is a SOLID #1 choice. My top ten ranked with regards to solo play: 10. Windmill Valley 9. Nucleum 8. Weather Machine 7. Sabika 6. Everdell 5. Inventors of the South Tigris 4. Marvel Champions 3. Voidfall 2. Wayfarers of the South Tigris 1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Change is Constant/City Fall Honourable mention to Ezra and Nehemiah.
Thanks for watching! You’ve got a solid top 10! I wanna play Voidfall! And I have Wayfarers I just need to get it to the table.
Good series and excellent top 10. Only thig I would add UnMatched Adventures Tales to Amaze. It has the best opponent system I have ever used, feels very much like playing a real person. And my all time favorite game Arkham Horror the cards game. Other than those two I can't argue against any of the other being on the list or their ranking. I just subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing! I actually just got Unmatched Tales to Amaze. I’m excited to play it! I could definitely see it making the list in the future.
Thank you for your Top 10 review!😊
No problem 😊 thanks for checking out the video!
Wow, great video! Have four games from this top)
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Nice Top 10! Do you play Dune Imperium with Rise of Ix or just base game?
I have Rise of Ix but haven’t played with it yet! I need to though, I’ve heard it’s great!
Great list, I can see that worker placement are often listed so you should try Lacerda ´s like On Mars or Lisboa as there is none in your list. Btw you should try Frostpunk if not afraid by the hard theme and if you are looking for a very hard puzzle challenge Best
Thanks for the suggestions! I really enjoy the Frostpunk video game, so I think I would like the board game. And I’ve never played a Lacerda, but need to check some of his games out!
Hey Jared! We met at City of God. Love the list and the videos you've been putting out! We've got a few favorites in common: Dune: Imperium (have you tried Uprising yet?), Ark Nova, Heat, and Earth! I prefer playing games with others, but a few favorites solo include Arkham Horror: The Card Game, Kanban EV, A Feast For Odin, and Paladins of the West Kingdom. I haven't been able to see the rest of your favorites lists, but have you played any of those? Hope you are doing well!
Hey Ryan! Good to hear from you and thanks for watching! I haven’t tried Uprising yet, but definitely want to! In terms of your other favorite solo games, I played Arkham Horror, but bounced off it (not sure why, I might need to try again). I’ve never played any Lacerda games but Kanban EV does look interesting and I haven’t played A Feast For Odin either. I have played Paladins but only a few times. If I play it more, it might grab a spot in my Top 50. If I’m ever back over on that side of the state, I’ll be sure to reach out!
@@SpecificallySolo I host a monthly game night on the second Friday of every month. Just let me know if you're ever in town 👍
Raiders of Scythia is an underrated solo game!
I think so too! I just don’t hear about it that much, but I love it.
@@SpecificallySolo Like "Ezra and Nehemiah"
Top 50 solo board games of all time without Spirit Island? Like really... ?
Great list! I especially like that many aren't strictly solo-only. Games with solo options are the best, flexible for playing with friends or going solo. Finding people to play with at the right time can be tough.
Totally agree! Thanks for watching!
I love Earth. I'm hoping to teach it (physical copy) to another friend soon so we can play it on BGA. Definitely want to play Heat. One of these days I will tackle Hadrian's Wall! Thanks for your list!
Thanks for watching! Heat is fun on BGA but is I think better in person cause you get to move all the cars around.
The Guild of Merchant Explorers is excellent both at solo and multi-player. Playing my first game of Cartographers on BGA at the moment with 7 other people. Really fun.
So your best solo games of all time are mostly the solo modes of multiplayer games . Hmm. No love for " Warps edge" , " Under falling skies " Final girl " ect. ?
Only Mage Knight ❤❤❤
Another great video. You’ve become a favorite on YT!
Thanks!
Great presentation! I often forget that multiplayer games can be great solo games. Thanks for this list!
Glad you enjoyed! And it does seem like more and more multiplayer games have solo play included now!
