Tom Baxter
Добавлен 27 фев 2023
Hi, I am Tom Baxter. I am a professional drone pilot, breaking into the field of ROVs. If you don't know, ROV is short for Remote Operated Vehicle. I am working in a partnership with Blue Robotics, attempting to bring my background of inspection work into the ROV field. Blue Robotics manufactures a highly versatile DIY rover called the BlueROV2. This ROV is shipped out in parts to be assembled by the user. There is an easy to follow assembly guide that walked me through the setup process with relative ease. One major advantage of this product that I love, is that you can integrate after thought technologies, as the system runs on top of a Raspberry Pi computer and open source software such as QGroundControl. On this channel you can join along as I document my trials and tribulations, in pursuit of learning and succeeding as an ROV services provider. I have a steep learning curve to tackle, but I do have a good background of relevant skills and a lot of friends to provide support.
Blue ROV2 first open water launch.
In this video you can see my first ever open water launch at a reservoir near Valley Springs, CA. California has had a lot of rain this season (more than ever on record to date) and it has probably contributed somewhat to the poor visibility I encountered on this launch.
This turned out to be a learning opportunity with some realistic challenges that I may face in the future. It was a great scenario for testing the sonar, which I did get to experiment with. I plan to have more videos coming down the pipe that will go into more details of my voyage to learning to use the sonar device.
I also had some difficulty with maintaining a straight heading with the rover while traversing the roughly...

Operating a BlueROV2 - Behind The Scenes 1
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
In this video I go over some of the preliminary steps involved with operating the BlueRov2. I give an overview of my field kit, including all of the items I bring with me when preparing to launch, as well as a brief discussion of how I manage mobility in between home and the launch site. I also go over some of the more rigorous and technical aspects that are involved with setting up the system....
BlueROV2 Maiden Voyage

In this video you will see the maiden voyage with the BlueROV2 by blue robotics. There is more to come, detailing other preliminary steps taken to launching, but for the sake of action and proof of progress, I am excited to bring this video to show case the experience. I will be trying to put out new videos every week or two, so please like and subscribe to my channel for updates on new release...
BomTROV Channel Intro

Hey guys! Welcome to my new RUclips channel BomT-ROV! Today I bring to you my first appearance on the venture of starting a new ROV services company. I owe this opportunity to an awesome friend, Elisa Miller. She has been a long time employee and one of the co-founders of Blue Robotics, the manufacturer of this elite piece of equipment. They are based in Torrence, CA, where I have had the pleas...
Hey Tom, very good explanation. Thank you.
Thank you for showing us the reality of operations in a high turbidity environnement. Keep it up !
hey bruh is it possible to mount a laser scanner in this ROV, if it is whats the right laser scanner for this rov
How did you program the xbox controller D-Pad? For some reason it's showing those controls as 16-19 and they are not programable beyond 15
Great to see your ROV has escaped from the pool! Hopefully it's enjoying its newfound freedom as much as you are... 😛 Some feedback, in case it's helpful: At 1:37 you mentioned having a challenge maintaining a straight heading - were you operating in manual mode? ArduSub's stabilisation modes (stabilize / depth hold) should try to maintain the current heading automatically as long as you're not commanding the vehicle to turn. There were some popping sounds in the voiceover towards the end of the video, which I believe could be reduced in future recordings with a "pop filter" in front of the microphone. Then again, since they're not present at the start of the voiceover you might have just been a bit too close to the mic towards the end. Sitting a bit further away and/or angling the mic a bit away from your mouth may also help reduce any hissing sounds from sibilance. By the way, a "rover" usually refers to a vehicle that moves along some form of rough surface, so tends to refer to ground-based vehicles and boats. I believe ROVs are generally called "R-O-Vs" or submersibles.
Hi Tom, it's cool to see someone walking through this process from the beginning - if anything the fact that you're just starting out makes it more likely you'll run into snags that other beginners will too, so will hopefully just make it extra informative as those get worked through 🙂 Given this video has quite varied content throughout, it might be worth adding some of youtube's "chapters" to it (by putting timestamps and corresponding chapter titles in the description), so that viewers can get a quick overview of what's in the video, and easily jump to a section they're particularly interested in. That's understandably extra work beyond a basic video upload, so might not be worth doing for all your videos, but does seem valuable for the longer and more information dense ones like this. I'm keen to see how this plays out - thanks for sharing the journey so far!
Really good.. keep us informed..
It looked like a productive outing to learn more about the challenges of underwater exploration. Do you get any water speed indication or a way to see in the OSD how fast and or direction that the water is moving around you? Really looks like fun!
That's awesome, man! Keep it up!
That's my biggest issue before searching for fpv quads in a reservoir. Could never see. Had to rely on telemetry all the time.
Great video!
Thanks for the feedback!
Very Informative Video. Thank You
Thanks for the feedback!
Great problem solving, you will be following fish in no time!
The editing and creative direction is 💯
You have some moves, Tom! Thanks for sharing your first dive with us 😊
We can't wait to follow you on this journey! 💙
