    What is the best easy introduction to phenomenology? I heard your recommendations. I would like a book for atheists, who are intelligent but not philosophically sophisticated. Thanks Richard

      Thanks for your question, Richard. I would recommend the following titles: -Dan Zahavi's Phenomenology: The Basics -Chad Engelland's Phenomenology -my Phenomenology: A Basic Introduction in the Light of Jesus Christ (that makes the point that the true essence of phenomenology is not methodological atheism but a perennial openness to possibility, including the possibilities of divinity). I hope these help. DW

    To delve into the intricate tapestry of another's existence is a pursuit rich with potential. The traits one observes need not be cloaked in robes of profound intellect, ethereal beauty, or une grande d'ėlegance. Such an exploration is only gratifying when the jewels in question glimmer in the most unassuming corners, akin to the irresistible pull towards the Word or a tome. In conclusion, the richness of human experience invites exploration, though it requires certain qualities to make the endeavor worthwhile. Something must be unearthed from this dissection. Otherwise, peeking into a person's life devoid of meaning is at best, a frivolous pursuit, or worst, a descent into the realm of condescension. The Lord invites us to seek the spark... look for the treasures that make life intriguing & extraordinary. Are you a humble admirer or an unwitting critic? That is the question I meant to pose.

    Thank you for this valuable discussion on Metropolitan John. Just a slight correction to his position/ title: The late John Zizoulas was the Metropolitan (a senior bishop of a large or renouned city/ region) of the ancient biblical see of Pergamon in Turkey (NT Asia Minor) under the Church of Constantinople (or the Ecumenical Patriarchate). He was correctly titled in Greek "Geron/ Elder Metropolitan of Pergamon" and was given prominent position in the order of hierarchy of the Church of Constantinople, due to his enormous scholarchip and influence in the development of the theology of the Church Fathers for today's context. But Zizoulas is not a Patriarch. A Patriarch is the Head or Primate (Protos/ First in Greek) of a local Orthodox Church who leads the Synod of Bishops of that local Church and speaks on her behalf. Orthodox Patriarchs & Primates according to the Orthodox canonical diptychs (canonical order of eminence) are: 1) The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople (who is the Protos/ First among the Patriarchs & Primates in world Orthodoxy); 2) The Pope & Patriarch of Alexandria; 3) The Patriarch of Antioch; 4) The Patriarch of Jerusalem; 5) The Patriarch of Moscow & Russia; 6) The Patriarch of Serbia; 7) The Patriarch of Romania; 8) The Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia; 9) The Patriarch of Bulgaria; 10) The Archbishop of Cyprus; 11) The Archbishop of Athens; 12) The Metropolitan of Poland; 13) The Archbishop of Albania; 14) The Metropolitan of Czech Lands & Slovakia; 15) The Metropolitan of Kyiv and Ukraine.

    When I think of beauty, I think of Wittgenstein's Tractatus and the general term that subsumes beauty, that is, brings the beautiful under a broader concept, and this is value. His last comments in the Tractatus hold true with him throughout his life: Value and its ethics and aesthetics (modes of value expression in our existence) refer us to that dimension of our existence which is simply given and is irreducible. So put, say, a lighted match beneath the palm of one's hand, and one faces a truly "pure" phenomenon, pure in that its essence is "determined' free of interpretative analysis, that is it simply will not be discussed in the determination as to what it is. As Kierkegaard, talking critically about Hegel, put it, the pain stands as its own presupposition. This is the brass ring of ethics, no? So beauty is a mode of value: simply given. Cannot be gainsaid. Apodictic, just like logic (notwithstanding the contingency of language itself. This aside for now), yet IN the palpable givenness of the world. Beauty, suffering, and the entirety of this value-in-being (call it) that is the very ground for ethics and religion there, in the phenomena of the world. Kant's wondered how apriori synthetic judgments were possible, but not how value apodicticity was possible. One is left with the horizon of value givenness, the bedrock of ethics (and aesthetics), its metaethics (metaaesthetics) worn "on the sleeve" of the world, if you will, and one sees that rational systems evolving historically are ALL about just this. This world IS a metaworld because in the essential givenness is the apodicticity of value.

    Hey Dr Wallenfang. As a psychologist, when I’m in a face to face encounter with the other in front of me(the patient), it seems to me the way I respond to the other(I.e with a posture of kenosis, openness to their otherness etc) that has both an internal and external response is important? I think you mentioned that a contemplative stance is not what is at play for Levinas, but how then does the way in which we engage with the other impact the ethical relationship? Even though I’m being held hostage, welcoming them as their hostage and resisting in reducing them to the same(even though he says we can’t extinguish the altering of the other) but merely resisting must make a difference? Thanks again for your videos they’ve been really helpful.

    • @myinteriorcastle313
      @myinteriorcastle313 Месяц назад

      Thank you for your comment, Wes. Yes, I think that there is an intentionality of resistance in Levinasian philosophy: resistance to reductionism, resistance to reducing the other to more of the same, resistance to self-interested lustful desire. Levinas suggests a renunciation of interpreting the other according to the faceless and non-linguistic modalities of manifestation. For the self, a fiat is required to let the other persist in her otherness while rejecting the temptation to assimilate the other as just another facet of the self. Overall, from a Christian perspective, I think that divine grace is necessary to empower the will to this unnatural and heroic degree of renunciation. Perhaps Pelagius (works) without Augustine (grace) is pretentious self-sufficiency, while Augustine (grace) without Pelagius (works) is irresponsible entitlement. The self needs to choose to act well, but the resources for acting well abide outside of the self, all the way to divinity. I hope this helps shed a little more light on your questions. DW

      @@myinteriorcastle313 thanks so much for such a thoughtful reply! Yes I think I’m following you. I know you’ve written on the relationship on prayer and how it can give us the ability to receive more givenness/saturated phenomena. Would you say prayer also helps us in resisting the assimilation of the other into the same and honoring their infinite otherness? So even though at the end of the day I have to betray the otherness through the Said of providing a diagnosis/thematizing the patients problems(which I know Levinas acknowledges is still necessary) I can provide a therapeutic relationship whereby the otherness of the patient’s is still honored?

      I let them remain distinct voices and projects in dialectical tension with each other.
