Terrible Ideas
Добавлен 19 май 2017
Bad ideas implemented.
Mount Madison in January Because Why Not
This ascent of Mt Madison was done with the professional guidance of Brian from Synnott Mountain Guides based in Intervale, NH. Ascent took place on January 6th 2025. Ambient temperature towards the summit was near 0 F and 40 mph winds made the windchill interesting. Proper clothes were worn and proper gear taken. Unless you are a qualified mountaineer I highly recommend using professional guidance when going up to the high summits of New Hampshire in winter. We hiked up and down the Valley Way.

Trying to See Boston From Ridiculously Far Away
Просмотров 14 тыс.21 час назад
Mount Kearsarge is 82 miles away from Downtown Boston as the crow flies. This might be the furthest distance from which Boston is visible from the ground. Join me in my attempts to see Boston from ridiculously far away! For all these attempts I went up the Winslow Trail. I also had to walk the park road since it is closed this time of year. Roundtrip for each attempt took roughly 2 hours.

-20 F windchill with 30 mph sustained wind. These are conditions to not be messing around in. Here is my guided ascent of Mount Adams with Nick, a highly qualified professional from the International Mountain Climbing School, based in North Conway, NH. It was one of the most difficult physical challenges I’ve ever endured, and one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. What an incredi...

WARNING: People have been SERIOUSLY HURT and some have DIED from falls on this “trail” which is more of a climbing route. Please only attempt if you are an experienced hiker with no fear of heights or anxiety/panic disorder. This is footage of me hiking this when the trail is wet. Also hiked it the day after when the trail dried up again. I can attest that there’s a lot more traction when it’s ...

I Got Sick of Boston Traffic, so I Paddled to Work

PSA: do not attempt if not an experienced paddler. Wear a life jacket and bring an air horn. Anyone who’s ever driven into Boston will know what a painful experience it is. Here I have devised a cunning method to avoid Boston traffic and park for free once in the city. Skip to the end to find a map of my route. Here I paddle from Upper Mystic Lake, through to Lower Mystic Lake, and down the Mys...
Highest Mountain in Illinois (Arduous Climb)

This is a story of resilience. Join me as I try to summit the formidable Charles Mound, at a whopping 1235ft above sea level, the highest mountain in Illinois. In all seriousness though, this is private property, and public access is only allowed on the first full weekend of June, July, August and September, as well as President’s day weekend in February. Terrible Ideas: Trying to get a long distance view in the winter.
@@vwnut13 Yes this was a terrible idea that payed off
Awesome video. Now you should forensically evaluate claims lights from Gloucester are visible looking north from Cape Cod Bay around Dennis at night ehen clear
@@paulcosta8297 Hmmmm I would have to look into it. Thank you for watching!
You picked a hazy overcast day for attempt 1? 😂😂😂😂
Yes I am very smart
This is an incredible video!!! Someone posted this video to the subreddit r/FromAfar today and I was so excited to watch it. I've never seen someone capture Boston from this far away before, amazing work! This is up there with Atlanta and Charlotte for the farthest view captured of any city in the US from ground level.
Wow thank you so much! So happy to see that a link to this video ended up on reddit!
Worse would be not doing it....🎄
Yeah I agree
Wow. You just keep pushing. Impressive!
Thank you! I must also do Jefferson at some point. Stay tuned.
What a spectacular day to climb a 4,000 footer. Stunning views. Another mountain with great views although not nearly as tall is Mt Major in Alton. The views of the Lake Winnipesaukee, the Ossipee Mountains, Red Hill, Mt Sandwich, etc are impressive. Maybe you would even see pilots landing on the ice runway at Alton Bay. Keep up the great content. Would enjoy longer videos.
Yeah this is my shortest video so there's that. Just wanted to document this experience. Will do a more trademark terrible ideas type video soon.
@@terribleideas2 Do you guys wear crampons or micro spikes when winter hiking?
@@chrisdaniel1339 We wore rigid mountaineering double boots for warmth above tree line. We also carried crampons but never actually used them in this instance. Microspikes on all the way. This being above tree line though, it could've been the case where we would've needed to use the crampons. We also carried ice axes but never used them.
Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
It could be worse: you could be in LA rn 🥺
Yeah not good what is happening over there
Cold snow crunching. Why not indeed, well done.
Thank you! It was a good day out
Sory i farded
Apology accepted
Beautiful thanks for sharing editing this must’ve been difficult
It was a pleasure! I do like making these videos. Thanks for watching!
how long did it take you? I started checking out the Sawyer River trail (also off the Kankamangous Hwy) a few weeks ago. There was already a foot of snow, but others had been out there, packing it down. There is a point where the trail crosses the river, so I stopped there, but am thinking about going back after a good cold spell.
@@nickit8871 Took me just under 4 hours at a very leisurely pace with all the filming and whatnot
It is remarkable that you did this trip in an inflatable which is much more difficult than a rigid kayak. Great job! i especially enjoyed the belch-echos under the bridges.

Damn Mt.Kearsarge is insane that you can see places that far away
@@Ifoundnohappinesshere Yeah it is an isolated mountain so views are insane!
Absolute joy. And terrifying. I had to take a break halfway through, and I'm just watching. I would love to see any video you have on- and after-summit.
@@burgwinkel I dont have those aftermath videos unfortunately. Thank you for watching despite all the burping!
Great video! Had no clue you could just kayak through the locks. Of course parking in Winchester aint easy either, but better than Boston! You could actually park all the way in Bedford for free, build a bike trailer for your kayak, bike the minuteman rail trail and then cutover to Lower Mystic Lake. It'd only add about an hour or so to the commute. The power plant at 21:00 is the Mystic Power Plant, which ceased operation in May 2024. It was the largest power plant in the state. It operated primarily off of LNG that it shipped in but could also operate on oil.
@@mg222. Oh good to know thank you!
I love your terrible ideas.
@@burgwinkel Thank you so much!
Been meaning to get to this one. Looks like it's the second most difficult MA tripoint to get to. MA-CT-RI and MA-CT-NY are all accessible on established hiking trails. MA-VT-NH is technically in the Connecticut River and requires going through private land to get to, so that is probably the hardest one.
I have a kayak... Coming to theaters this spring...............
Microspikes?
Yes microspikes
It wasn’t slippery?
@@Gumby25000 You just gotta be careful. Bare ice is slippery. Even with spikes if they dont dig in properly you can slip. You are the judge of what is safe.
Gotcha
Having gone to Colby-Sawyer College in New London and climbed Kearsarge at least 6 times, I can confirm that downtown Boston can be seen on the clearest of days and is really neat to observe from So far away.
@@NismoFinder Wow so cool! Yeah Kearsarge is basically Colby-Sawyer’s backyard haha
I wish we had mountains😔
@geemcspankinson We can send you some
This shows that the Earth is flat! This is why you can’t see Mt. Everest from New York, because at that distance the mountain appears so small that the atlantic ocean’s waves are enough to hide it from view. /s

Looks like an impact crater to me. I wonder if a geologist has checked the rocks.
Yes they have
any MTB trails?
I don't know but you can visit the Pawtuckaway state park website for details
there was this nice pile of rocks up behind one of our neighbors' houses, in the woods but still his property. I don't know if he'd have approved me going to look at it after several decades from when I and his kids were young, but... dang it looks like the big pile of rocks fell apart. That's a shame. :( it was nice to climb on and in. I wonder if it got pushed over on purpose, or just naturally? It was some big boulders like the size you see... IDK if it could've been from the farm field next to it having cleared out the morraine rocks.
Lots of interesting rocks around these parts
Reminds me of Springfield MA if you look super hard with a good enough Lens you can see hartford CT peeking out
@Roboseal2 Oh yeah I remember seeing Hartford from one of the roller coasters at six flags new england hahaha

i fly out of eastern slopes regional airport in Fryeburg quite often, you know the one, the runway points almost directly at kearsarge. I can confirm that on very clear days you can see boston from there, but those days are maybe 1/30.
