A drastic but efficient solution for Roland cymbal pads problems. If you're here, you've probably tried everything. Do it at your own risk and be happy 😝

All drum sounds from a Roland TD-25 module, recorded directly from the module itself. The drum kit is a contraption: Gretsch acoustic kit converted into electronic with internal center mounted triggers, generic double ply mesh heads, Roland and Triggera cymbals, Roland SPD-30 and Roland BT-1s. Gibraltar, Tama and Roland hardware. Yes, I'm a lefty :)

You're a life saver. Roland just ignored me when I enquired. Found this and managed to bring my CY12 back to life with this process. Works just as shown. Thanks!
I wouldn't be cutting the cymbal like that, pretty sure you don't have to, unless the CY-13 has some unique bracket design that is different to the CY-12 and CY-15? Word of advice - aerospace 303 spray, get it inside and it will help lubricate and protect the rubber to prevent decay internally. This will drastically reduce the wear which occurs from the friction between the rubber surface and the plastic housing/membrane. If you destroy a membrane you can get replacements from Myrk- Instruments, though they are not specifically designed as replacements they can fit with modification to the cymbal (as roland won't sell you a replacement membrane).
Extra super good job thank😀👍
Muy útil!!
Thanks for the video. My cy13r was self choking and by opening it up a little bit i could see not only debris but the sensor ribbon is cut. Amazingly it still works cut in 2. Now my problem is to fix all the back cracked plastic.
Once the plastic is cracked, in my experience, it'll last you another 12, 24 months, depending on how hard you hit it.
Somehow it took like 7 years for one of mine to start having this issue, maybe they made them better back when I bought em or maybe I got lucky, I bang the hell out of these Mine was so old and used that I didn't even have to cut the rubber in the main hit area, it was just already mostly crumbled and it peeled right off. Some of the plastic was cracked and I had those rubber pebbles on the inside, I could even see where they were triggering the choke because it rubbed black on the sensor. Works like new again, thanks!
Started having self-choking problems with my CY-13R at my last gig. Found this video and Viola!!! Works like a champ again. Thanks so much for posting video!!!!!
Bro thank you. I was about to spend 200 bucks and found your video. Legend
Fixed my black bottom CY-12C model cymbal. Thank you for making this video sir!
I have one of the white bottom CY-12C and this method corrected the self-choke problem. In my case, there were two large chucks of rubber that had broken away and were siting on the sensor edge. After I brushed off the sensor edge the choke problem was gone:)
Great video! I have a 13C that is choking. The Ride cable works and allows some ride/crash. The Ride Bell cable doesn’t work in either jack. I thought it was the cable but I bought a new cable assembly and the new Ride bell cable doesn’t work either. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks!
I just cleaned it.
Just saved me 200 dollars
Would this work for mine ? It’s a cy 12 C. It’s very quiet and have to hit quite hard to register slight sound
Well i guess im buying Efnote. I was just about to pull the trigger on a roland vad507. Fuck that lmao
i'd do the same if they sold EF Note where I live 👍🏻
@@radrums7362 I'm ordering mine. I ordered a pro technical
Great video! One of my ATV-cymbals is stuck in choke. I will try this as I think they are much the same with some people from Roland working at ATV..
Cool. Let us know if this works for ATV cymbals as well.
If you’re angry about paying for e-cymbals then wait until you buy acoustic cymbals. Is hard to make anything that can stand up to constant whacking.
Right. Metal cymbals are a bit overpriced. E-cymbals are WAY overpriced 😁
Until they make them in titanium 😂
Thanks a lot buddy! That was exactly what i was searching for! Gonna fix it tonight an beat the hell out of it again 😅
This method is excellent! I have the same problem on a Roland Cy-18DR ride cymbal. Could this solution work?
I love the ending lol
Left hand drumming goes hard 4head
Any reason to glue the edge back down?
Not really. You don't need to.
Thank you.
You just saved me £200 thank you very much Sir! 😊
This is an excellent video thanks. Worked a treat.
bought my kit in 2020 and this trick definitely worked great on my broken 12c. thank you so much for this!
This method fixed my CY-5 too, thanks!
Opened mine to find rubber like in the video but the white disk had been cracked in 6 different places with chunks ripped out of it. What a mess. Going to try using some RTV to hold the pieces in place and come up with a way to re-enforce the disk.
I always loves the drums on this song so much. Especially the closed hi hats
I'm considering upgrading my cymbals to this CY-12C. I see that Roland has a new version though, that is thin, and I'm wondering if this thin version fixes the problem that you are describing here and if not, if the thin version can be fixed in the same way you are doing the fix to this one?
Both my td27 cy-13r and cy-12c had the entire plastic broke about 3 years after buying. Any notion of "thinner" plastic sounds like going the wrong way. I am a heavy hitter though.
I bought a Roland kit a few months ago and everything worked fine until recently. This is my first kit and I have very little experience with troubleshooting issues. I have the cy13 r and when I strike the bell area now it causes the sound to become scratchy and distorted with all the cymbals and drums. I have to strike another cymbal several times to get the sound back. Do you have any advice or suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks
Hey Marty. Never heard about this problem, but it seems to be a module malfunction. Perhaps you could record a quick video showing what's going on and share with us, so we could give proper advice.
before cutting your cymbal check that firmware is updated on your drum module. i almost cut my cymbal and found that firmware fixed my issue. i had pitch issues on my ride cymbal edge trigger before the update.
Thanks for the video. They are so damn expensive. Mines even the plastics and the long flat sensor have broken. Bad bad quality.
same here. The sensors are still okay but that white disk is shattered.
My Cy-12c on a TD17-KVX stop triggering on edge/rim. Im out of warranty. What you suggest me to do?
You could check the edge sensor connection first. If all looks good over there, open the fu***er up and check if the edge ribbon isn't torn. If the ribbon is damaged, say goodbye to your pad, unfortunately...
@@radrums7362so reading on these threads I just had to ask. My cymbal is a CY-12c crash on my TD17kvx and it started self choking a while ago. Your video helped me to clean it up and get rid of that problem for a while, now it has been doing it again, so I open it up and realize that the ribbon is broken, sliced from side to side, a clean cut. But it stills plays the choked sound, I clean it and try to apply pressure so it doesnt bends up. it works for a while but then it chokes again. So my question is can I just tape the ribbon or apply some kind of glue to its bottom to make it still? Is it the cause of the choking? Cause I’ve clean this mf up and it doesnt seem to have any particles of plastic or dust anywhere, just the ribbon cut that bothers me. Could I just solder some pins if I scratch it? Im kinda desperate here for a solution without expending some ridiculous amount of money for a new cymbal:-(
one more tool in the arsenal

This was very helpful, I've recently had the same problem with a yamaha dual zone pad that's worked fine with a td17 module and then suddenly the choking problem.... I'll have to figure out how to get the rubber off but at least I know the fix now, thank you 👍
Cool. Glad to help 🤟🏻
I have the CY-12c, and I did the same procedure to solve the problem. Internally it was very clean, without any foreign particles. Anyway clean them. In the end the problem persists. If anyone has managed to solve this problem, please share the solution.
You could check the piezo. How old is your CY-12?
@@radrums7362 My cymbals are 2 years old. The problem is that they have no sensitivity. I have to hit them very, very hard so that they catch the hit of the drumstick and make a little noise.
@@heribertotapia9804 I’m having this same issue with the same cymbal model. Other crash and ride work fine. I just can’t figure out what it is.
same happened to me and when i took it back apart and looked more closely i could see some deteriorated rubber that was actually kind of stuck to the lip on the underside of the rubber. it was easy to overlook because it didn't stick out much. scraping these off with a plastic instrument finally resolved the issue for me.
@@juliangles92it's a pressure sensor so there is something applying pressure to the choke sensor. look more closely and really take your time. i'll bet there is some junk in there somewhere that you missed.
Worked for me!!!! Saved 400 on a new cymbal. Thanks dudeeee!
I absolutely love you bro, this worked like a charm. 100% agree with everything you said at the start aswell!
🤟🏻
Aveeeee
Nice to see other left handed drummers :)
Thanks for the tip. Love the ending, lol
What a great video, I’ll know what to do when my cymbals stop working now. We need a lot more competition in the electronic drum market…
Hi boss nice drum...i just want to ask how did you setup to make it left handed?
Roland is a joke
@@radrums7362 abri ontem e limpei porem nao funciona. Comprei cabo novo e nada.
Mine its similar CY 13 the bell its not working
Cara, é um absurdo isso... Cheio de relatos e os caras ignoram. Dizem que não tem mais garantia e é isso aí...
This is excellent advice. I talked to my Roland rep & he suggested a $500 plate. Peeling the rubber back & periodically cleaning fixes auto choke especially found on my Silver Cy14 rubber models, on the top of the frame. Those models are easier to separate just take your time. CY14 Silver isnt glued and is easier to peel the rubber.
