Ex-pat musician/artist/videographer/professor of literature living in Tokyo, Japan.
I have been doing music "solo" since 2017. I started out in Fukuoka as a singer in a hard rock band, formed my own unit, which splintered after less than a year, and then continued to create my own music sans band from the end of 2016 onward, learning Logic Pro X, buying and using a MIDI keyboard, and then progressing to various styles of (often experimental) music.
Instruments I currently play both on my recordings and on stage (i.e. in addition to vocals) include acoustic and/or electric guitar, piano/synthesizer, drums, Suling bamboo flute, and various synth/noise gadgets, such as the Kaossilator Pro +. Much of my recent music is improvisatory in nature, though I also frequently rearrange songs from the past, as I spent several years as a singer-songwriter of both acoustic and electronic-style songs.

A talk on October 18, 2024. Note of clarification: In the talk I say "When one is standing in a forest, one cannot see the trees," rather than saying "...one cannot see the forest but ONLY the trees"! I then go on to say that the entire thing (i.e. all of the trees = "the [or a] forest") can be better understood or seen when looking down (or else "out") at it from a higher vantage point (in thi...

Initially I was going to post the improvisation "as-is," presented as the final of my studio sessions videos from last weekend, but as I ended up remixing what I had and adding backing to it ...

@@MarcLowe Any idea what the carnival memory means? It seems so weirdly crucial
@@freddydurbin6778 Q: What is the difference between a memory and a dream? Or, rather, how are they alike? This may be a key...
@@MarcLowe wow.…
At 1:45 I started to draft a comment about my enthusiasm to listen to you and your muse. Something held my dialogue. The Tower. My word I'm only 3:50 in and looking for a seat belt. Thanks again captain I'm going for a swim 🫡
"smoke colored sludge funk" is something that popped in my brain listening. A genuine taste of delicious madness.
Hi @Madgura. I always really appreciate your interest and enthusiasm, both for the talks and for the music. "The Tower," a recent composition I wrote and recorded in my room/home studio, ended up being a sort of theme that ran throughout the session. Glad you are enjoying the waves, as choppy as they tend to get at times...
@@Madgura Maybe better than "smoke-colored sludge fudge" at least... (?) ;)
@@MarcLowe So after taking my listen I have a question. Is your creative process one where you feel as if you perform the entire time or do you initiate the process and let creation happen? Or do you have a different experience with creating?
@@Madgura When I am using backing tracks, as in the first part of this session, they, along with the visuals (when I have access to a projector -- here I simply layered them in during the editing process), create a sort of "frame" upon/within which to perform the improvs and/or "songs," as with "The Tower" or my reinterpretation of David Bowie's "Hallo Spaceboy." As for the improvisations you see in this video where I am not using any backing tracks or visuals -- everything after the first 30 minutes, basically -- they (the improvs) lead me, or, rather, I just sort of get out of the way of things and let the music happen. If I wanted to be more "metaphysical" about it, I would say something like, "I allow myself to become a vessel for the sound," or "I allow whatever comes to me at each moment to just flow out of me," or something like that... Many viewers/people in general might, perhaps, object to this way of describing the process/experience, but it's actually pretty close to this, I think...and yet, it is very difficult to describe and would be impossible to "teach" anyone else how to do, since this is simply *my* process/my way, or at least it is at this moment in my development. The style/s you see here very much developed over a period of time, several years just experimenting with different ways of trying out things and coming up with different/new ideas. A lot of it may be thanks to all of my "alone time" since Covid here in Tokyo. There is no set "method" or "rules" to this form of music/sound-making, or at least none that I am savvy enough to be able to "codify" in any way, unfortunately. I can't market it to anyone, and it doesn't get me any bitcoins or fancy meals at fancy restaurants. There are, at times "starting points" that come to my mind for these improvisations, certain vocal themes I might begin singing (such as parts of "The Tower," as I did on the final improvisation, or, at one point midway through it, bits of my own songs from the past, such as the beginning of "The Dial Is in the Bathroom," along with its concomitant piano melody, or "Black Nail"), but those things, too, always happen spontaneously. Nothing was pre-planned here apart from which instruments and effectors I chose to use and which to leave at home (for example, I played neither the acoustic nor electric guitar, nor did I get behind the drums, which I sometimes do). The backing tracks/video projections of course have to be planned in advance, but in the case of this session, I had utilized this particular set of backing tracks for the first time ever. In fact, I wanted to see what would happen before my next "electronic" show on August 29. I am not yet sure whether I will do all/none of the set with video, or just go on stage and do a 30 minute-long improv without them. Maybe some combination thereof. Thirty minutes flies by as if it were five or ten for me.
May I ask? Can you change your mental perspective in the same way you transpose musical pieces? Like if wanting to understand anothers view would you run a version of their perspective after you have picked their brains through conversation?
Thanks for commenting. I am not sure I fully understand the meaning of your question, which is a "case in point." All of us live through our own respective perspectives. We perceive and interpret others through the lens of our own biases and perceptions (this is why most marriages or relationships do not last). I used to "over-interpret" or "over-think" what others "meant" all of the time, and by doing so I lost friends and had very traumatic relationship experiences, but these days I try to "step back" from "myself" and just take people's comments and ideas "as-is" and not put any additional layers of meaning between their words or actions and my perception/interpretation of them. Does this make any sense? (Laugh.) Very difficult question to answer in a short response on RUclips, but thanks for your comment and for watching the channel!
@@MarcLowe yes it's amazing watching it all spiral out every factor is a fractal of factors. Love that you express the "Creatorive" power. I believe only in the ability to believe. If you asked what love and faith are I would ask you to play the song again.
I also notice. You have not eaten of the tree off Good and Evil or you noticed that you were the one holding the label gun.
@@Madgura Good/evil = dualism
@@MarcLowe what ever it all is. You think for yourself and it's beautiful. Not only that you share it with the world through music. Much Love. Live long and happy song filled years.
has it really been overlooked? One of my very most favourite albums by Bowie. Is this the album where the lyrics were generated by a computer, btw? He said once he was a grandfather of lyrics to one album, as he wrote the program. Either Outside or Earthling, I guess...
While “1. Outside” is not exactly a minor album (“The Buddha of Suburbia,” from ‘93, for instance is less-known), it tends to be passed over or even given somewhat negative and/or uncomprehending reviews compared to other late-period albums such as “Heathen” or “The Next Day.” Yes, Bowie used the Mac “Verbasizer” to do cut-ups for some of the lyrics, such as “The Heart’s Filthy Lesson” and others on the LP.
@@MarcLowewow, thank you for the answer. Can I get a bit more please? Do you know how the program worked? You say cut-ups... Was it not actually writing the lyrics? What did it do then? Thank you

Wonderful video. For a person that spends so much time alone what is your view on the unconscious and dreams etc? Perhaps an idea for a future video?
I have been fascinated by the subconscious since I was young. My grandparents bought me Jung’s “Memories, Dreams, Reflections” for (if memory serves…or perhaps it was a dream?) around 12, as a birthday present. My MA thesis for Japanese literature focused on the creative notebooks of Kobo Abe, considered by many the “Japanese Kafka.” My own music and fiction writing essentially comes from the unconscious/subconscious as well. I stopped composing songs before rehearsing and recording them years ago, and my current arrangements (and lyrics, or spoken word) are all basically done in one take. Of course I later arrange and mix what I have laid down, but this is what I do. I don’t believe in outlining or prewriting riffs and lyrics. Same for writing fiction or doing these talks, for that matter. 100% spontaneous (though I edited out a few bits to spare the viewer unintentional repetitions). Thank you for your comments.
There’s an amazing sociological/psychological anthropology text semi-recently published that is EXCELLENT and explores this topic from myriad angles: “Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone” (2013), by E.Klinenberg You might enjoy it. As a fellow loner, I definitely did!
I will look for it. Thank you!

Individualism isn't celebrated in the US much. But it is somewhat ironic. After all, when a business is competing with another business it is what that business does differently that ultimately sets it apart and makes it successful. Going along with that analogy, I'd say that just like most things have already been invented, and simply reinventing the wheel is usually pointless. The key lies in innovation. So searching the boundaries of what is commonly accepted in a culture and then adding elements of invdividualism within an accepted range is the way I would go. People sometimes go to extremes trying to buck any and all social norms when perhaps just a few would do. Everything in moderation, I suppose. That is just my idea on the topic. 🎉
I appreciate your comment, and your perspective as well. It's a complex topic, to be sure, and sometimes "the middle way" is best...but not always. I would say it's a case-by-case thing. In my own particular case, I do not wish to "rock the boat," but if I believe in something I will stand my ground or, better yet, simply walk away from what might otherwise become an ugly situation. I have had my fill of those in the past, and would like to think that I have "graduated" from that by now... Again, thanks for commenting.
