Mark and Dylan are both busy this week so here's one we made earlier, geeking out about games we like and stuff.
We’re all grateful that you rented that house, the Linebreakers were just brilliant!
Re: "Eli, we're in THE NEXT ROOM": Yeah... I remember families arguing about who would make the tea next... ON FACEBOOK.
It's like an American film in London where you can always see a big Ben 😉
Rendle's sales pitch is top notch... I wish I could remember just a half of that next time I'm in a job interview... 😆😆😆
Woah! Eli's "The idea that the faster you can write code - the better an engineer you are, fundamentally misunderstands what writing code is for" is a hell of a quote... even outside the GenAI debate. Oh no... I couldn't eat any cephalopod... have you not seen the film of a male cuttlefish flirting with a female cuttlefish whilst simultaneously lying to her "husband" about his intentions... all done by "animating" his "palette".
Woah... Dylan AND Kevlin in one helping.... I feel like when Wayne and Garth met Alice Cooper... If you'd have had David Whitney on too then I might have had some kind of fan-boy aneurysm.
I need to find this museum next time we're in Porthcurno!
As someone who was at Notts TechFast, I can say that you were very coherent :) I'm the chap who recommended The Unadulterated Cat to you.
I'd buy Rockstar In A Box.
Really enjoyed that, peeps! Very interesting, also a fan of Charlie Brooker.
On the "true names" aspect, T.S. Eliot's "The Naming Of Cats" describes it very well. And no, I'm not taking the piss, "Bill Bailey" is genuinely in the original poem. The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, It isn’t just one of your holiday games; You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES. First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily, Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James, Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey- All of them sensible everyday names. There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter, Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames: Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter- But all of them sensible everyday names, But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular, A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified, Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular, Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride? Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum, Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat, Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum- Names that never belong to more than one cat. But above and beyond there’s still one name left over, And that is the name that you never will guess; The name that no human research can discover- But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess. When you notice a cat in profound meditation, The reason, I tell you, is always the same: His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name: His ineffable effable Effanineffable Deep and inscrutable singular name.
People not being able to go anywhere because of a strong union. Even people without a union get a day off, perfect.
Loved this! I'm nearly always in a meeting at 4pm on a Thursday (a nice one) so I see this as a treat I get to watch on VOD!
Yup, missed it live again but catching up now. Nice to see Eli being their usual awesome self
59:02 EBCDIC has a soft C, "Eb-su-dic", you heathens ;-) I guess you'll know z/ boxes handle a lot of UTF-8 these days (monster www servers etc.) but maybe you didn't know they had ASCII support back in the old steam days, but it was dropped because not enough people used it!
Darn, missed it again
But now caught up. Another good one gents
Definitely look up Manim; it's the math visualization suite created by 3 Blue 1 Brown, and used in all his videos.
Just hoping Rendle sees this--I'm working on a small project and we've agreed to call the debugger The Unf@cker, in his honour :-)
That's fantastic 😂
KCDC is quite tech agnostic, and is an excellent conference too.
Ever considered the Spinal Tap approach to drummers? Find a local one for each gig, then invent increasingly ridiculous reasons for the fact they're no longer there at the next gig...
Would like to follow you on Mastodon!
So much fomo right now. One of these days I’ll check the code and get a talk accepted at NDC. Each time it looks so much fun 🙂
Since I started computing on a C64, my favourite games were International Karate and Giana Sisters. My friend had an Amiga and we played a lot Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge.
When you were talking about video workstations I remembered a YT video I'd watched a few days ago about using an older spec Dell Workstation as the base for one -but couldn't find the link during the show. YMMV of course ruclips.net/video/mFdmYnr5fEM/видео.htmlsi=v39QBxhgkpxeyNVZ
Missed it but I refuse to watch on twitter, so I’ll just watch after the event
There is a movie about the airship going across the North Pole. It's called Titina. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titina_(film)
Amazing vid, I just realized that Mario updated his favorite way to tackle ED and it's crazy! Although what he previously talked about was pretty decent, it was difficult to follow, I just go'ogled the latest by Mario Volpstein, it's so much simpler and potent now!
38 is the first number, which roman reprasentation is 7 characters long. So I guess some field in the database is only 6 chars wide. And storing those numbers as roman numbers is not that far away from reality... 😂
While I really like 5 string basses, there exist a "Hipshot D Tuner", so you can switch easily between tunings on a 4 string bass.
Last week was TBRR #32, shouldn't this video archive be 1.33 instead of 1.32
You guys are hilarous!😆Love your work!
You told the story about Willow and Rocksmith on episode 14, starting around the 15 minute mark.
Modern seat belts are great, actually. In a crash they first tighten to make sure you're properly restrained, then slowly (relatively) release you so you don't experience forces too high. Meanwhile they position you to hit the airbag in the perfect spot. iirc, this is especially vital in Europe where airbags designed and tested assuming you're wearing a seat belt; in the US airbags are also designed and tested for people not wearing a seat belt, though they definitely work better when you are wearing one. As is too often the case, I have no clue about the rest of the world.
I work with System.Reactive and rxjs connected via SignalR and it is so much fun!
Hurrah! I'm catching it (almost) live 🙂
The way I use "next $day" is that there's "today," "$day" means one of the days between tomorrow and 6 days from now inclusive, and "next $day" means one of the days between 7 and 13 days from now, inclusive.
Now I’m sorry I missed this live….
I think sing --> singer and drum --> drummer are both that way because they are "a person who does this verb." The -ist suffix is used for "a person who uses this thing/ability." So it comes down to the fact that "drum" is commonly used as a verb for "to play drums" (or more generally "to bang on something in a rhythmic way"), in addition to the name of the actual instrument. Other instruments can be verbed - basically anything can, as the meme goes - but it's not nearly as common as with "drum." So the real question is, why did drum catch on as a common verb, and say, violin didn't? Random guess, it goes back to the fact that anyone can drum their fingers on a table, for example. When was the last time you violined a piece of string? As for preferring one over the other, I'd say that adding -er to a verb is simpler to process, so it's heavily preferred.....if it's a ready option.
38:05 this is one of my arguments in favour of bigendian hardware--you don't get lower values working in tests for the wrong reasons :-)
"rules of thumb" are in a way also examples of cargo culting, especially if they're applied without knowledge of the underlying math
The complaints I've seen about Microsoft Recall mainly focused on two subjects: 1. this gives hackers a standardized database to exploit once they've compromised the system, making it easier to impersonate the owner of the PC or to scrape info about their habits. 2. this can be a dangerous tool in the hands of an abuser in an abusive relationship
Another book of fun from the 80s is "Illegal Aliens" by Nick Pollota and Phil Foglio. And I really enjoyed reading "Ready Player One".
Dang, sad I missed this one live. 😢
Mark, you need to revise your ‘worst programming languages’ talk to include something from Rockstar!
My favourtie podcast that is very convient for me to watch when live at 3 in the morning
"do not take opinions on legacy code from someone who uses a black and white profile picture ... because they think 'old things' are classy!" (chuckles!) 🤪
Fun show guys, thanks. I think Dylan might be the first person under the age of 70 I've encountered who has even heard of Sky. My dad was a bit of a fan at the time they were active and so they were my first gig (Colston Hall, Bristol some time in about 1985). I still quite like them, but I think for nostalgic rather than musical reasons. Although they did have bass legend Herbie Flowers playing for them. Funnily enough Magnum were my 3rd gig (Bournemouth Pavillion c1989).
I've gone through the Rolling Stone list of the best 100 albums of 2010-19 and I don't know any of them. I wonder what I bought in that decade (being the same age as Mark).
Ok, I bought "A different kind of truth" by Van Halen and I like it. But I don't think, it should be "the" album of that decade for me...
💯 "Promo sm"
Cheesy intro....😀
Please tell me you have seen the intro to the movie Idiocracy. Don't watch the whole movie, just that intro is amazing. Listening to Mark talk about the reason why we haven't heard of any other civilization, I couldn't stop thinking about that movie.
