Changeable Guardian Estique - New 8-bit Shmup from ex-Compile Devs - Fully Commentated Clear
A bunch of former Compile devs got together and decided the Earth needed saving in this Shmup, and that they did it best in the 80s, so it's only on the Famicom/NES and here it is: Changeable Guardian Estique.
And it's good.
A great throwback to 8-bit days of old, which is available to play on your NES, Famicom or various clone hardware. There is no rom available to buy, just the cartridge, which means no Mister. Instead I play it on an Analogue NT.

RowBot Rally - Great Playdate concept that made me want to rip the Crank off
Просмотров 36128 дней назад
Rowbot Rally, a new top down rowing game came out on the Playdate in late December, it was hyped up as the "and one last thing" in the Fall Playdate Update and... I did not like it at all. The game is based on a premise that you are trying to correct a fault and do this through gimmicky controls. Whilst I'm all for gimmicky controls, it should not be the main star and wrestling against it for t...
A Bibelot - Y Type - A dirt cheap PS exclusive short Shmup filtered up the wazoo.

Every week I like to look through the New queue on Deku Deals, partly just to see what the Arcade Archives release for the week was (the current answer is Castle of Dragon, a late 80s action platformer) but also to see if there's anything I've missed. Anyone can make a Shmup, someone usually makes a Shmup, and if it's cheap enough I'll give it a go. This was definitely cheap enough. Turns out t...

Here's a free game I saw on the Shmup new and popular queue on Steam, in between all the various Vampire Survivor clones and Metro Exodus VR, blindly clicked it, found myself with five minutes, and wouldn't you know: It's neat. A neat little concept, you're a line on a line shooting lines with lines. There are visual effects to keep it interesting, as well as upgrades along the way, but it's a ...
1st Fanterra Alternative Oblivion, another wonderful Pico-8 Bullet Hell
Просмотров 102Месяц назад
This one popped out of nowhere as a "demo". I say "demo" because a lot of work has gone into this. It's 3 stages, there are 4 difficulty modes available, 3 weapons, you get 10 minutes of gameplay, and it's near enough feature complete. All that's missing is probably some more stages but compared to other Pico-8 single stage shmups, this is pretty feature complete. This is a run of the Normal mo...

Просмотров 169Месяц назад
This is Gekirindan, a mid-90s Shmup seeing out the end of the Toaplan-esque games as the Bullet Hell juggernaut burst its way through, and it shows because it was made by former Toaplan staff after the company went bust. Unlike Asuka and Asuka, this gives you a story reason for time travelling shenanigans as you play Shmup Turtles in Time hunting down what seems awfully like Shmup Robotnik thro...
Gun Trails - The best Shmup on the Playdate - A crank free playthrough with True Last Boss
Просмотров 729Месяц назад
The very first game I bought for the Playdate, after exhausting all of season 1, just happened to be the best Shmup on the system: Gun Trails. An attempt at a bullet hell game and it does the best with what it's got, using hand-drawn graphics, fantastic scrolling backgrounds, giant bosses and everything with style. It's also criminally underpresented on this platform, I tried looking to steal p...

Here is a playthrough of the demo of Black Paradox Reloaded, available now, in anticipation of the full game, released TBA. And this is a remaster of a 2018 Roguelite horizontal Shmup, a game that has a little under a hundred reviews on Steam and also released on Consoles to a handful of reviews. It's come with a fresh paint job, and it offers the first two levels up for demo purposes. I am not...
Airanblade Caravan Mode - A new Shmup from Brazil - Superplay until you can prove otherwise.
Просмотров 59Месяц назад
This is Airanblade, it came out on Steam in early December '24, link down below, and it's from a small team, as all Shmups are, out of Brazil. And it's quite good. You look at the screenshots and you fear it might be generic nonsense made using stock assets. And while it's probably made out of stock assets, the gameplay is pretty good, it's fast, sometimes it's exciting, and there are moments t...

Terarin's Return with a Caravan of Caravans - Crystal Breaker - Commentated Final Stage Gameplay

Terarin is known for trying new things, so here they are throwing all their weight behind the Caravan mode which has been in their many games. There is no arcade 1cc mode here, you play a stage, you complete it, you unlock the next, wash, rinse, repeat for three difficulty l...

First stage looks like Final Mission on Famicom , little bit , Great game !
I seem to recognize some enemies from Jaleco's Earth Defense Force. Anywhoo, interesting game.
What about the music and sound effects?
I've got a secret reveal, it's not one that I'm particularly proud of, but because a lot of work in Shmups is repeating so much especially when I want to clear arcade games, I don't listen to the music any more. I put on a pair of headphones and listen to podcasts. However, I've gone back and listened to it. The sound effects are like they're taken out of 8-bit Aleste/pre-Aleste Compile titles, a little plink sound when something hits which is a nice throwback. The music though is quite varied, I don't think all of it hits, but I do appreciate Bayern because it sounds like someone's made an 8-bit version of a pop song, and there's some other music which sounds absolutely like an 8-bit Action title like it could be a Ninja Gaiden clone. There is stuff here for people to enjoy, but I have a lot of podcast subscriptions to get through. Thanks for watching.
I believe the proper analogy is... " make a Death Star trench run look like taking your pet Womp Rat for a walk on the beach"... CARRY ON!!!...
Petelgeuse? Sure it shouldn't be Betelgeuse?
It can't be an old-school inspired Shmup without some typos. In the instruction book, they say the first level takes place in Honk Kong for example. Part of the charm. Thanks for watching!
Thwow him to the floow!
@@BalleramaAC Oh it's *intentional* LOL that's different - making fun of instruction manual mistranslations TAKE OFF EVERY ZIG FOR GREAT JUSTICE!!!
Compile Shooter? Say no more fam
13:15 What you saw was a Daimonji.
They could of done by a Master system version if they the old complie devs. This is a pretty awesome game. Compile was great at pushing the limits of the Nes and Master system.
Pall Pour Pase Pare Pelong Po Petelgeuse?
Twow him to the floow!😂
They really made fantastic use of the NES's underwhelming colour palettes
This is absolutely gorgeous. There is real mastery of the hardware too here.
I'm glad we still get releases like this for older consoles. The graphics are gorgeous for a nes game.
That looks awesome 👍
why isn't there magneticsm in space?
I've spent many a moment this weekend mulling this, looking up the current thinking on the matter. In a galaxy itself there does of course exist a much smaller amount of magnetism, however, the cloud behind the boss at the end of the first stage realistically generate enough magnetism through its dynamo action to effectively power the space toilet time portal rotation. My commentary was wrong. The things Shmups makes you look up from time to time.
@@BalleramaAC I hope I did not waste your weekend with my idle question. I just figured magnets worked anywhere regardless of gravity :)
It looks decently made. Music is nice. Seems like they could have used their talent to make a more memorable game instead of something so "tiny" (throwaway?) though. The boss music sounds like the boss music in Fantasy Zone.
I'm sure that in PSX version the shoot is not too powerful that here it is! Despite this, great video! Just one question: Why do you avoid change the normal shoot to laser ou plasma?
Thanks for watching. It's a common thing in Darius games, there's a big rank increase when moving from one weapon class to another, even on max difficulty here from Dip Switch settings there is room to go up and what rank also adds is Boss HP. Bosses are shorter if you keep to missiles, with max missiles also being quite strong in their own right, and as much as I love G.T., I don't think I'd survive spending an extra minute or two with her even if moving up would make the stages themselves easier.
i was not ready for the nightmare faces!
Nah this is where these games lose me. i love shmups but im not big on steaight up sensory overloading bullet hells. Ikaruga on GameCube was way too much for me! At first i thought it was Raystorm.
One would think simply having the boat constantly move forward and using the crank as a simple radial steering method would have made for a great time. Not spectacular but I feel the presentation could've picked up the slack there.
Damn, you really are quality content! Love Classic Shmups. Going to the arcade with my cousins, we would always search for the shmups OR metal slugs if no shmups were available.
Hey, Im on vacation in Switzerland and The Algorithm did something right! Very good quality, love your voice and you go straight to the point. very nice!
Hopefully it's a ski holiday, lots of fresh snow but very wet right now for the rest of us. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
that's 2.5 dollars more than I'm willing to spend for it
I'm so excited there's someone else out there doing this! And you're even sticking strictly to the STG Difficulty Wiki List which is even tougher and-OH MY GOD look how fast you're pumping out these videos. Now it's on, baby! Race you to the top!
1 dimensional Defender is definitely a bit more interesting than bullet heaven clone games
I've only ever played the Saturn version. Yeah, the scrolling is weird. But I love the art style, soundtrack and simplicity of the gameplay.
do breakout clones on PlayDate use the crank the way old consoles used a paddle?
I was 9th with 330,651 March this year. Scores definitely progressed a lot since then.
I just want to know where those Million+ scores are coming from. I know one of them is the Angel Pop dev that's quite active on the Playdate Discord, might have to ask him, but would love to see a video of that one day.
@@BalleramaAC It might be better Super route. You seem to keep it a lot for the harder monsters and ultimately waste some.
Are you still moving up the difficulty rankings of the forum? I've been enjoying your videos a lot, keep it up!
Oh yes, definitely, there's just a lot of games worth playing at Level 3 which means I'm sticking around for a bit longer than I'd hoped. There's a bunch of Toaplan games here like Slap Fight, Batsugun Special and Vimana, and also Twinbee (but I'll wait for the FPGA core for that). I've got some Level 4, 5 and 6's lined up just needing to get time to do the commentary, which also starts getting into Darius, and after Vimana I'm going to skip ahead briefly to level 23 just to show easy games can help figure out harder ones. Looking forward to putting that one out. Thanks for sticking around so far though, it'll be a long journey but there'll hopefully be more fun as I go further up.
Forgive my ignorance, I read the description, what is Antstream?
Needs to be on steam
EMBRACE THE CARAVAN!!! Love the commentary, and smart to use Stage 8 to cover the whole game. 100% true if you’re just looking to clear, not much here. I’ve spent more time trying to juice Stage 1 + 2 EXPERT than the time to “clear”. Still got to hunt around for Japanese players’ footage. No idea how they’re getting the monster scores they’re putting up. It’s a different mindset, but this is like an event or festival. The hundreds (maybe a thousand?) Terarin fans racing up the leaderboards for the next couple of weeks. I wish more shmuppers (yes it’s a word now lol$ played for score and caravan games are a great way to do it without losing your mind. Jenny = best girl 💪
Thanks for the video. I've been wondering how this one stacked up to the other Terarin games.
Any typos will be prosecutedt to the full extent of the jam
The fact it took 2 minutes of your video for me to recognize a game sitting in my roms folder means something: air assault is kinda forgettable
Just discovered this channel, so much fun! Instantly subscribed. I saw you have a couple playdate videos, I think you'd really enjoy both Gun Trails and Angel Pop, they're fantastic shmups on the console and both of their developers are big milestone/rs34 fans.
Interesting bit of history and a cool game. Good content mate 👍
Interesting idea for a series, I find it funny that they decided to include 1CCs based on exploits in the list, but a clear is a clear.
I'm just glad it's a list that gives you the option. Cheese it now, play it properly later. They do the same with Autofire i.e. list what it would be with and without using it when it does break (like Vimana), when there's a difference on 1-player and 2-player side, and also broken characters (Like Raiden Fighters 2 if I can bear to play the current PC version). It's like a Speedrun, sometimes these exploits are quite fun. Thanks for watching.
NGL the idea of a shmup that is so easy, the game literally plays itself is kinda funny. Part of me think they did it more for the memes than anything. Also, there's this homebrew bullet hell shmup for the Nintendo DS I discovered recently called Space Impakto DS, I think you'll like it... just saying...
Great video man! Really interesting
From what I understand of the cube mechanic, the yellow cubes disappear after a set amount of time. After using the charge blaster and turning the cubes green, they won't disappear. That's all it is, you don't get more points for green cubes vs yellow cubes or anything like this. super simple stuff.
Very expensive on the eshop sadly couldn´t got the physical, this game is amazing, music and graphically better than all those polygon shoot em ups out there, unique style/graphic engine.
ng dev usually keeps their stuff in print, that's too bad they let this one go. maybe annoy them via emails and bug them to keep it available.
@@ian.swift.31614 thanks, I waited for the reprint but maybe they won´t do anymore shame hehe
Awesome game anything Terarin Games has released is top notch Raging Blasters Star Gagnant Moon Dancer and Terraflame being my favorites
This was entertaining to watch, gg. Easy game, but it really seems that it would be amazing fun in coop
