Swap Saddles Without Changing Strings! Highwood PAIN-FREE Saddles on an American Pro II Strat.
Fender *claims* to be an innovative company, but they're still putting vintage style bent steel saddles on many of their guitars and thus causing many players pain when their palms scrape across the exposed saddle height (aka "action") adjustment screw tops. If you ask me, in the 21st century this is simply inexcusable. That Fender continues to market a line of instruments as "Professional" and they hurt to play and don't come with locking tuners already on them is simply ridiculous.
A Dutch company called Highwood has an actual innovation to solve this problem: Saddles on which the adjustment screw threads into the bottom of the curve rather than the top. Not only do these saddles ELIMINA...

Thanks for joining me. It's the first time I've tried something like this, so hopefully it translates well. I'm playing through the first song from my EP "Project: Mayhem," a tune called "Flightline," and switching basses as we go along. Buy my EP! Installing an Apollo B&G Bender on a Fender George Harrison Rosewood Telecaster

There are lots of reasons why you might want to put a B-bender on your guitar - but what if just bending the B isn't enough? And what if you don't want to drill holes or rout out a third (or more) of the back of the guitar because you've got a limited edition (and semi-hollow) @fender George Harrison Rosewood Telecaster? That leaves you with a few choices, but many of those stick up over the to...

Decoboom Pickguard Swap on 1991 Fender American Standard Strat

OK let's get this straight right now: It might actually be a 1993 American Standard Strat. I don't have it with me as I'm posting the video and I can't actually remember. Anyway, it's from that early-1990s era of American Standards, when @fender was truly firing on all cylinders as far as stateside production went. I actually sold this guitar to a friend and he was kind enough to call and ask i...
Fender Heavy Metal Strat Disassembly & Inspection (HM Strat)

Set your wayback machine for the still-peaking era of glam metal in the late 1980s. Fender, not terribly long after the employees bought the company back from CBS, decided the hot-selling "superstrat" market needed an actual Fender in it, and what we got was this, the so-called HM Strat (or Heavy Metal Strat). Its specs are bizarre for a Fender guitar - a scale length between 25 and 25.5", 24 j...
Using a balance/blend pot to access all 7 pickup combinations on a Fender Stratocaster (HM Strat)

After I posted the sound check video for this guitar, I got a few questions about how the switching works. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of using a balance/blend pot to do this, but I thought I'd explain it to you anyway. This is a mod that leaves your guitar visually unchanged. One thing I don't explain in the video (but is implied by the diagram I include in there) is that, becau...

What I really wanted to know was if playing the exact same thing at the same time using two guitars - one tuned standard, one tuned Nashville style - sounds exactly the same as playing a 12-string guitar. I saw in another video that the tone knob changes to strangle levels when enabling the strangle switch. Did you happen to see anything in the guts to support this?
Not on this instrument. The tone pot functions as a treble cut only, just like any other tone pot.
@chiba131 Oh interesting. Thanks!
Thanks dude!! Helped me restring my new jazzmaster for the first time xx
woohoo :)
High heat may cook internal (sensitive) components. Care needed
Definitely a concern with pedals in plastic cases. For the majority of pedals in metal cases, the case itself acts as a heat sink ... but your point is a solid one. You should use just enough heat to loosen the adhesive, not enough to boil cabbage!
The Highwood saddles are great. They were the first part of my guitar I replied after experiencing the incredibly bad Fender saddles.
I have these saddles on 2 Strats and the tonal difference is immense
I changed my mim-Strat to these saddles a few month ago. This changed everything. I measured stringheights and saddlepositions before i started. So i kept my string-action and had to do minimal adjustments for intonation.
Dont alter a strat, it will decrease the value
No it won’t . He will keep the original saddles
@@Stewbert_72 exactly :) Plus I never get a guitar thinking I'm going to sell it - so I don't care much about value. That said, I don't ofter make changes I can't reverse and often put guitars back to 100% stock before selling them.
They could at least come with springs
they do! :)
Never touched a guitar and replaced the strings on my brand new jazzmaster. You’re the man.
glad to be of assistance :)
I have these saddles and these are terrific. One tip: you could have used all springs from Highwood as the spring windings telescoop into each other as I found out. These guys thought of everything.
@@Steinstra-vj7wl I believe it! I was watching this video after I posted it and that exact thought occurred to me lol Maybe next time I change strings!
That should be a stereo head with two speaker outputs. Hope you don't damage it with only one speaker load. Also, that has been recovered with something.
You can safely run it with one speaker, but yes, it SHOULD be used with a stereo cab. I used it with a single mono cab for years with no problems. It has not been recovered since it was purchased - I knew the original owner - it came from Fender like this. I'm not sure why it wasn't the gray carpet most of them were, some kind of special run or something.
Very nice finish, is it seafoam sparkle?
yes it is!
Always loved this song. I never would've thought to play it on an acoustic. Thank you for posting this lesson.👍
This looked pretty nice to avoid drilling into my fender, but I reached out through the hipshot site and they said "Unfortunately we are not making those right now. It was a "beta product" and we will offer it again once we have the chance to make it official." Bummer
That is a real bummer! Now I feel lucky to have gotten one before they ran out. They didn't tell me anything about its beta nature when I got mine. Had I known, I'd have gotten two!
@chiba131 now that the new Jack White tele has one, I have a feeling they might be working on licensing the tech to Fender
@@BenPereira great spot - I missed that on the JW Tele and I sure hope you're right!
I’m in the opposite boat. I just got one of these almost the same but with maple neck. I want to swap in EMG pickups from the original ones thanks for this video, helps me see how to do it. Now just need to figure out which pickups to use.
Keep in mind you may need to rout out some wood for the EMGs like mine has in the bottom of the pickup cavity
@@chiba131I’m new to guitar but these stock pickups just aren’t as “hot” as my mh-1000 emg or fishmen pickups. I just can’t get it to make a similar sound without turning all the settings up way higher. Even then it’s not the same. I could be doing something wrong but that’s why I’m thinking of making the swap
@@FreedomCrawler You're probably not doing anything wrong - you're just one of those people who likes the sound of EMG pickups! Nothing wrong with that at all :)
@@chiba131I’m trying to reverse engineer your video to add what you took out. Could you tell me what the setup was on your EMG setup that you took out
@@FreedomCrawler Yes, it was a Hum-Single-Single setup, I think the hum was an 85 and the singles were SAs. They were on an import 5-way pickup switch with a master volume, and the neck & middle on the 1st tone, bridge on the 2nd tone.
Nice video and explanation. I’m kinda not diggin’ grounding to a mounting screw. I re-grounded mine to switch chassis; just like it better that way.
As long as the ground itself is secure, I think any way you get it done (that also makes you happy) is the best way to do it!
I have a ‘22 eastwood sidejack DXL LTD LMNOP… I find it to be a great sounding, great playing instrument. Agree with Indonesian quality in materials and craftsmanship but I expect inconsistency from them. Not much different than most makers, imo. However, the plastic nut. It’s strangely not even as hard as the tuner knobs. Weird decision there. I will be replacing it with bone, too. Minecame with the Les Trem ii whammy. Also weird but works great and looks cool. I’m tuning AToA. I think it’s a great guitar all around. That being said, even though I paid half the list price, I am considering getting the baritone plus and might have to pay in full. Probably installments.😂I really dig them.
I'm glad you had a good result with yours. I sold mine, and the guy who bought it is really happy with it.
@@chiba131 I also have a Danelectro baritone. It weighs about half as much, and has a slimmer, faster neck (with a metal nut!). I prefer the eastwood p90’s over the lipstick danelectros but both guitars have a wide selection of tones. They cost about the same. Tough call. I may have to keep them both.😂
You regret to instal this system. Within two weeks your strings will snap. Really , this is a bad system. The pressure from the strings on the saddles is to high and the result is snapping strings on the sharp edges of the saddles. Even after replacing the saddles by saddles with a round upper surface the B and G string make a cut in the saddles ; it's a bad design. Better choose for the Certano system .
I've broken one string so far (a B string) but that was with heavy use in trying to get good with it.
@@chiba131 There you have it . How long was the B string installed ? This may not happen , also with heavy use . Do you wanna play everytime very carefull because there might break a string ? I have a Certano system on my lapsteel with two handles : the same principe ( those systems they have also for electric guitar) And believe me , I use it heavy on my lapsteel for a few months and yet not broken one string.
@@Jef-sj6zc mmmm probably over 2 weeks of daily use. It's hard for me to judge if it was the bridge though, because I break strings from time to time just because I play hard.
@@chiba131 Look on RUclips at video's how tremelo's and bending systems are designed to prevent breaking strings ; the problem here is to much pressure on sharp saddles because of that thing in your bridge ( for de B en G string ) were you have to put your strings underneath and than to the saddles . That causes a huge increase of pressure on the saddles of the B and G string. Now when you use the handles the strings move back and forwards over the saddles with a huge pressure on those strings and that is not good . You will soon have broken strings again , I assure you.
Great series! What do you think about the Vintera ones? Any upgrade needed or they're ok as is?
I haven't seen or played the Vintera II Bass VI, but my opinion of MIM Fenders is much higher than these Squiers. I would assume it might need a complete setup, maybe a little bit of fretwork to make it 100% perfect, and then be good to go. If the Vintera II BVI had been available (or even known to be on the horizon) when I got this BVI, I'd have gotten the Vintera II model.
I was unable to order the staytrem bridge due to the company being behind on orders. Would a mastery bridge solve this issue as well
100% yes, the Mastery is probably even a better product, but it costs more
What is a "real good deal" on these? I see them for about 1k on Reverb. Theres a nice one near me for $500 that's all intact in the Black Marble looking finish.
I think $1k is a decent price for them. At $500 I'd be concerned it was fake, damaged or even the Squier version they once did.
I really like your side bag setup. Link please and thank you.
The rack is stock from Indian. The back is a Giant Loop Round the World pannier. I believe they still sell them singly. www.giantloopmoto.com/product/round-the-world-panniers/
Two words: Painter’s Tape!
Why complain about a budget guitar? Thats why it's half the price of the fender. You are right about the tuners, but I've that experience with guitars that cost twice of the bass vi
Because I can? It's less complaining and more stating my opinions, which happen to be negative. I took care of the problems.
Groovy
It’s not really an amp though is it? There’s no speaker built in you’re playing it through a real amp.
It's an amp head... If a speaker was attached in the same enclosure it would be called A Combo!
Keep doing your job bro! World needs more guys like us ♥

Love that strat..but since JC Curliegh Restored Epiphone back to premium in 2019/2020 im loyal to Epiphone i have my 2021 high end Epiphones posted with the specs so there's no debate..or miss understanding
It's OK to love your Epiphone :)
Pretty valid reason to learn to play mandolin haha
Would you need to change the tone pots as well? I want to put a higher output humbucker in my HSS strat, but I'm curious if I need to change the tone pot for the humbucker to 500k as well
I would recommend a 500k tone pot for a humbucker, definitely. A lot of people will wire the 2nd tone pot so it's only for the bridge pickup (even if it's a single), and that seems like a good move for an HSS guitar. When I initially put this wiring scheme together, I definitely used a 500k tone pot for the bridge pickup and a 250k tone pot for the singles.
am i the only one hearing the buzzing from the first strat?
You're not going crazy :) There is a tiny bit of buzz (I think it's from one of the saddles) but it doesn't come through when the guitar is plugged in.
Thank you so much! Everyone seems to want to tell you what the S-1 pot does and everything about its periphery, but you are the only one I've found that tells us how to install it. Thanks! If I ever want to get into electronics, I'll listen to the dry explanations of signals, etc. Until then, I just want to learn how to create those signals.
You're welcome :)
ive got it too... Brian has ALWAYS been one of my fave guitarists even before I played
It’d be a cool mod to add a jack to turn the treble booster on and off via a foot switch. There’s a pretty easy mod to add an effects loop to these amps as well.
That would be a cool mod. Not sure if I'll really use the treble booster - it's SO noisy. But it does sound cool!
I have the standard version of this. It has a pretty smooth gain. It sounds closer to an actual tube amp than most solid state amps and reacts well to picking dynamics and guitar volume knob. I wish Ampeg used Nutubes in their solid state amps then I’d be set. Even the Orange Crush series would benefit from this technology. The Crushes have a spitty note decay when played dirty.
Vox (or their parent company) may have the patent on Nutube tech, which (if they do) would preclude others from using them without license. They could of course develop their own, but who knows what some companies see as valuable. I freely admit I'm absolutely surprised at how good this amp sounds - whether that's the Nutube or the overall architecture, I don't care. I dig this little amp!
Hey man. I loved this video series. How much would you charge to do this same job on my Bass IV?
Me personally? Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to do it (though I would love to) without a lot more practice because it required fretwork and a new nut. Everything else ... cost of parts + $100-150 depending on how long it took.
Dude thanks for this tip!! Building my first pedal board tonight after years of using a multi effects 💪 totally using this method, i hate Velcro on pedals!!!!
Great. - Would you recommend using a dual pot (250/500) for my 335 neck HB (seth lover)? I play blues and jazz and the lover comes with 500k. Good and bright for blues but for jazz I would like a warmer tone. Greetings
No, I wouldn't recommend that. You're likely better off experimenting with tone pot capacitor values than changing the pot itself.
A couple times you mentioned a "cheat" way to play a chord. Well there's a cheat for the A. Just play the top two strings on the second fret. Admittedly, it's an A without a third, but it works.
An A5 is still an A :)
I just did this last night to my new pedal board and all my pedals before putting it together. The only problem I had was when I was rearranging pedals the tape would start coming off when I pulled it off the board. Velcro itself stuck to the tape just fine. Basically just put it right back but maybe with time it'll get a better bond. Either way I don't expect it to be moving much or changing pedals often. Also, I did this for myself as I don't sell anything.
Hmmmm good point, it could be that the bottoms of your pedals need a quick wipe with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any residual dirt, oils, etc. Low-tack tape still has to tack, so anything on the surface of the paint could prevent good adhesion.
How does it go in the dirt with those tyres.
Carefully.
Awesome job, putting the touches on the guitar 🎸 You still have your Indian FTR
Yes I do, don't ride as much lately but it's still here :)
I just started having a problem with my S-1 as well. Mine does the opposite. It won't stay down. I like the sound with it pressed down. If I reserve the wiring, Could I have the "hot" position/boost on all of the time but go to the thinner sound by pressing the S-1? Great video. Thank!
I don't know if just reversing the wiring will do the trick, but you should DEFINITELY be able to do what you say with the S-1 switch. It's just a matter of shunting the appropriate wires to ground - or not :)
I have never heard it called a bathtub route, I have always heard it referred to as a swimming pool route. I am not a fan of this pickguard, I think a carbon fibre weave pattern would look awsome on a black bodied Strat!
I might be the only person using the bathtub term :) Swimming pool is definitely more prevalent!
Can I use almond oil?
I've never used almond oil but I can't imagine it would damage the wood, so why not?
I am so glad I am across your video. Like you, I want to preserve the look of my pedals. I am assuming you still practice this to this time and with this length of time, What would you say is the lifespan of this pre-Dual lock fastening set-up with blue tape before it needs to be re-done?
I haven't replaced the blue tape on any of my pedals since doing this BUT I also don't rearrange my pedalboards all that often. My guess is it's a YMMV kind of thing.
@@chiba131 I appreciate the response. What a smart move.
Thanks, very interesting! 👌🏻
Agreed :) I find these to be fun & interesting guitars for sure!
Thanks helped alot
Glad to hear it!
but what about a boss pedal?
unscrew the backplate and flip it so the rubber is inside, then rescrew it
I never would have thought of that.
This works for a lot of BOSS pedals **but** be sure you're not compressing any of the internal components (especially circuit boards) - some pedals have more filling in the guts than others. GREAT idea, BTW!
Why would you want oil with fragrance? Just buy pure mineral oil! And if you do want scented, why choose baby oil over lemon oil? You make strange choices. But you make good points.
Baby oil like this *is* regular mineral oil. No scent.
