Great build, compared to the McMansions that have no soul this house really shows what a home can be. The amount of recycled items is really impressive, but it does come with a cost of time to finish and implement those details. ❤

In south Africa we prefer open plan living, we build houses like that. Maybe because we don't need central heating

To be honest, I like rooms, having a door to close behind you, beeing by yourself. It is not only heating issues why we have rooms. I also like different lighted rooms, a kitchen needs some windows but a snuggly living room not. All that open plan huge living areas might be aery and modern but not cozy. The balance for each individual person is to find. Flexible elements like sliding doors are very useful. In this example the upside down version would have worked better. But I agree with them, it has to fit their needs.

Gosh, that's an achievement! Excellent use of materials & what's available. Always love post & beam - wonder if our builders know how it's done? Wonder why the insulation can't go on the outside, would be quicker & probably more efficient - so far as materials go? Very inspiring episode.

But those have managed to twist the very good ideas a bit to the cheap side. The light is to much and to coloured. The cussions on the sofa...😐.... the much too white rest of the house. The wall paper in the master.... But they are happy...and so it's ok.

The only thing "wrong" with this build is the fact they won't be in it as long as they think...a one level would have been practical. BUT I'm happy they are happy with it. Cause it's their home!❤

They are conventional down to their DNA. People in the UK are starved for design and don't know it. (But Piers is insufferable. He doesn't connect with anyone. Owners feel personally attacked and talked down to.)

my question is: WHY 2 ISLANDS & A PENISULA?? NO GOOD. It would be much better a HUGE & LARGE ISLAND with cabinets, draws around it, but on front a dishwasher, & a wine fridge. On top of of the ISLAND am electric cooktop or a ranger top. They would have more space & storage... chairs on the front if the island & maybe even a galss behind the range that could go up & down... of the space in between the chairs & the ranger would ask for it... NO CHAIRS in the penisula that is just there dor more storage & if the ISLAND was correct, as I said, that wouldnt be necessry. Anyway... I KNOW THEY ARE HAPPY WITH THEIR OWN ,DIY, HOME SWEET HOME.

€100K but 3+ years of time that's not included. Add in what he could have earned over those 3 years and it's a £300+K build in reality. Also add in the extra money they had to spend to rent two places to live... Walking up and down those stairs with groceries and whatever would drive me nuts.

Lol, people get worked up by this couple’s PERSONAL decisions is STUPID. So the old and conservative couple don’t follow a professional architect’s advice and create a boring house that somehow works as far as THEIR lives is concerned, don’t see anything wrong with that. The upstairs living room is ugly but that’s just me, they love it so be it. Live and let live. There’s nothing more boring than having a house that is a complete by product of other people’s ideas instead of the owner themselve, regardless how perfect it’d look in most people’s eyes.

Why even apply for the show if they knew they didn’t want to stray from their original plan? The whole point of the show is to rethink your plan and branch out to new and different ideas.

I would have ground the concrete island down to a finer finish before moving in. It's too late now, the dust would get everywhere despite using proper vacuuming techniques. Decorative concrete is usually finished with a grinder.
