Sorry to disappoint you Dave. It’s a Zoom meeting and only one mic can be active at a time for it to work properly, so everyone else is following along with me based on when they receive the signal. We started the Zoom sessions during Covid as a way to continue playing together (kind of). By the time lock down was over, not everyone joining us were local, so we have continued on.

I’m glad Becky liked the song! I’m curious as to how you found out about the video Nathan. I normally don’t get very many views and thought you may be able to shed some light on it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks BrianQ! You know how important this step is! I wasn’t sure after the Sisters on the Fly seminar (2 sessions for a total of 35 CBGs) that this step was completed on every guitar. After Penny and I talked, I told her I would shoot a video to show the ladies how to do it, so she could make it available to everyone via Facebook. So I knuckled down today and punched it out. I hope the ladies will take the time to do it on their new CBGs.

Our Folk Festival videos are different from the songs from our Zoom meetings which only have the songs. Sorry to hear you did not like that.

This is the first song I teach anyone to play whether it’s one-on-one or a class of multiple students. We just play quarter note down strokes to start: 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 and after a few chord changes, I just start singing. I have yet to find a better first song. Have fun with it Pieter.

Thanks David! You are correct, the Chugger is tuned to GD. With the exception of the embellishment ( fretting the D string 2 frets up on the C, F, and G chords ) I am playing 1-finger chords for the entire song. Hope that helps.

Thanks for watching Jank! Screen door, fence or broom wire would be cool too. A mag pickup would be a plus. I am 3D printing my frets these days (easier, faster, and cheaper) so fishing and trimmer line is a less abrasive choice plus they feel good and I love the lower string tension too. They have their own distinctive tone.

@@cbgslinger also acoustic banjo and ukulele commonly use nylon strings, so they can be easily swapped with fishing line, since fishing line is nylon also

@@cbgslinger the entire fretboard you can print at once, although it would have to be piecemeal unless you have a giant printer...

@@-jank-willson I have used fishing line for cigar box ukuleles. 250 lb test seems to be the limit for the instruments I am building. I have tried up to 500 lb test! Lots of fishing line on hand.

@@-jank-willson I have used 2 approaches. Print individual frets and use 1/8” double stick tape or print a 2-piece thin, flexible fretboard (one or 2-color print) and use 3/4” double stick tape. Both have worked well; the 2-piece fretboard requires less labor, individual frets show off the fretboard wood. It’s unconventional, but fretting is a labor intensive process I don’t miss. But I have a stash of fretwire, just in case I want to go traditional.

I really appreciate the comment John. Your Maas Reconstructed Nickel Cigar Box Guitar. RUclips video amazed me (I love to show it to others to broaden their horizons!) and got me to take the 3-string CBG seriously after not being satisfied with the sound of 4-string ones in various tunings. Although I like this particular CBG, it requires more gear than I prefer to use regularly. My solution is a 32” scale length GGD tuned CBG using 400, 200, and 100 lb test fishing line and a piezo pickup. I lose the high G but still get that cool bass/guitar sound. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Thanks Gerald! I’ll keep strummin’. The Chugger is an Uncle Crow style build with the neck on the box but with a flying bridge that straddles the neck while touching down on the box only. 24” scale length repurposed oak cabinet door D shaped neck tuned GD. Nickel wound strings (32 and 22). The lighter weight strings make it very easy to play and I think the Nickel wound strings have a mellower tone. I hope that is helpful.

Yes. I am just hitting the top string before the down up strum. Although for a variation on this strum you can strum down through all the strings instead of just thumping the bass note.
