Prototyping a mechanical testing board
After mentoring someone for the first time in my shop, I realized that I needed a way to rapidly show how different mechanisms work. I made a board with holes every 1/2 inch, and this was my very first test with a component to see if it would work.
I'll try to share my progress as I find what works and what doesn't.
My goal is to be able to rapidly test ideas before they go into an automata.

Comparing my latest "Empathy" automaton with my very first one
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.Месяц назад
I was looking at an "Empathy" automaton that I just finished for a custom order yesterday. I was comparing the one I just finished with the original that I made almost a year ago to make sure it was true to the original and I noticed that I have learned a few things and made a few changes (for the better I think). I thought I might try sharing my thoughts.
How to make a dancing bird automaton
Просмотров 8 тыс.Месяц назад
I came up with this little dancing bird automaton as an inexpensive introduction to automata that I can sell in my on-line store and make available as a do it yourself project. It doesn't have a ton of parts and while I use a lot of expensive machinery in this video because I am making 30 of them at a time, one can be made with pretty common hand tools in about an hour. I know that a lot of peo...

"Understanding" Automaton
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
This is the 21st in the Robot Enlightenment Series and my "U" project in the Alphabet Superset Challenge. It has taken me several weeks to get this one done. It started out as an attempt to make the robot look at it's own mechanism and "understand" it's workings... I meant it as a representation of looking inward to understand the deeper meaning behind a set of feelings or thoughts, but as the ...
The Assembly of Kindness Automaton

A quick video of the assembly process for my new "Kindness" automaton Another video of the assembly process for one of my Robot Enlightenment Series automata. There are 26 of the robots in the series (one for each letter of the alphabet). This is my "K" design and represents finding that part in all of us where kindness for all things resides. Let me know if you like these little assembly video...

A state of calmness, serenity, and peacefulness. This is the 20th in the Robot Enlightenment Series and my "T" project in the Alphabet Superset Challenge. When I think of tranquility I am brought back to being a young child and sitting up by the fireside while camping. Occasionally poking at the fire to release a few sparks into the night. I tried to capture that feeling in this automaton. I am...
The Assembly of Tranquility Automaton
Просмотров 8 тыс.4 месяца назад
A quick video of the assembly process for my new "Tranquility" automaton I thought I would share what the steps are to put together one of my automaton designs. There have been questions about the mechanisms and how they work and I thought that maybe showing step by step how it all goes together might make it easier to see how it all works. I could do a video on the making of the whole design f...
"Tranquility" Robot Automaton prototype

The Prototype for "Tranquility" is done. I learned a lot with this one. 3 movements crammed into one automata was a bit much on a 1.5 x 5 inch platform, but it worked out. I'll be spending the next few days making tweaks and improvements. This could end up being one of my favorites.
"Nurture" Robot Automaton

I've updated the design for Nurture from the Robot Enlightenment series. I made the flower petals a bit sturdier and wider to make them less delicate. The watering can spout is now a half sphere and I swapped the wood in the pot & dirt so that the pot is light wood and the dirt is dark wood. I think it looks a lot better. I put them in my Etsy Shop spetzlerdesigns.etsy.com This week I'm focusin...

      I think it's called a "fast return actuator". I used an offset pin in a circular cam that goes into a slot in an arm. It's easiest to look up the term and see a drawing or graphic.

    The arms are in different positions And it makes them look like they have more character... Especially The person on The left whereas his arm was straight down now it is slightly tilted forward

    • @spetzlerdesigns
      @spetzlerdesigns Месяц назад

      Good eye. I do tend to pay attention to the default position of the arms a lot more than I used to. All of the arms are somewhat adjustable (the arms are not glued solid, but jointed with a piece of leather cord that allows me to rotate them), so you can re-position the arms of all of these robots to some degree. They may go back to the default position over time though, so it's still important where they are rotated when I first glue them.

      Yes. That was my first thought too. The two companies I contacted to make one for me told me that the size is too small and detailed for them to turn into a brand. I haven't tried any others recently. That would be ideal though.

      I don't think I can explain it in words because I don't know what the components are named. It's basically an offset cam shaft with a slotted wire loop so that the wire goes side to side, but not up and down.

    If the range of motion for the head is measured in 180degrees where 0 is looking straight down and 180 is looking straight up (90 being totally neutral); you should have the head bobbing range from 45 to 90. That would look more natural

    • @spetzlerdesigns
      @spetzlerdesigns 2 месяца назад

      I was thinking something similar while I was editing the video. For some reason it does not look the same in person as in the video, but you're right, even in person it would look a bit better with a more neutral neck position.

I didnt expect the immediate connection to form so deeply.. this was a constant ritual between my cat and myself, before she passed away unexpectedly at the start of this year. It's not obvious (and it's not exactly what I was going for), but I like the emotion of it and it fits with how I have been struggling lately. Not all of these practice pieces are turning out like I want. It was originally supposed to be the little robot looking at it's arm and then seeing how it ties into the mechanism underneath (understanding how it works), but the arm completely blocks the face and the movement ended up being too cyclical to get across the original intent and just came across as more of an anguish... Which is what happens to me when I begin to understand how I work (mentally). So, I just decided to lean into that side of the meaning of understanding - which could have been done more effectively (or give it a better name like "anguish"). So, it is what it is and I will move on to the next practice piece. I did learn a bit more how to make a complex movement in the simplest way possible, so it was still worth finishing and publishing - maybe someone else will make use of that movement in a better way.
