I love Beowulf! One line I pause on is the clause included in Hrothgar's generosity: "he would dispense His God-given goods to young and old--- But not the common land or people’s lives. " Common land existed, and could not be alienated even by kings. Peoples lives are grouped with other property - slaves? But they couldn't be dispensed freely either - maybe similar to Anglo Saxon laws, that forbade selling slaves outside the country.
