Watching this 3 weeks later as I recover from surgery. The 80's and early 90's really were a golden age for all of us! I'm not sure we would have ended up where we are without Iowa Arts council/NEA school shows and residencies.

Jim Henson was the hardest working man in show business, a creative genius and Disney(TM) bought The Muppets out just to shelve it for the competition. That sux...

I met Dick Myers in the 1970s at the Puppeteers of America festival. He kindly allowed me to carry cases for him and watch him set up for his performance and do a test run. He was very kind to me, but I'm sure he thought I was a pesty little kid. He made a huge impression on me for his creativity and craftsmanship.

Just realised Frank Oz could never do this with, say, Yoda. Wouldn't be appropriate, legal or easy to achieve in a live format. Nobody wants to see Yoda bantering with an audience... he's in a different category completely from The Muppets.

Wow Cookie Monster seems super low-effort, you can just about do him in a comfortable seated position just holding a conversation naturally, looks actually pretty seasy (if you have decades of puppeteering experience to the point where the mouthing comes automatically of course)

39:25 People aren't just clapping because oh hey it's familiar, but because those Muppets are PEOPLE in everyone's minds, and so it's rude not to clap when guests join a stage. Imagine just awkwardly sitting when Kermit the Frog arrives-- no, of course you clap, a famous movie star just "walked in the room". That's how real Muppets are to people.

Hello! I'm not sure who this will reach, but I'm wondering if you are able to give me a few minutes of your time and explain in your own thoughts... (if possible) on how the marionette controller works on the puppet "alex barti". I would have to guess that you are familiar with this character. However, if you are not then I highly recommend you to do a online video search and prepare to smile in amazement... anyways...The internet is not that great for info on European marionettes. And I've stared at the handful of videos and photos that partially show one or both controllers online for hours trying to wrap my brain around it. What materials, the actual concept. I actually emailed Alex not expecting a reply of course. Asking similar questions and advice.. without being rude of course and asking him his secrets....And he actually replied a few days later saying .... Hello Trevor..."my control is my invention, it's made from steel and its very complicated, I've never got into teaching so I don't think I could teach it. It's still being developed everyday and I might one day decide to market and sell my control invention to the public with instructions. We will see" "But if I ever decide to teach it I promise to contact you". Thank you. So that was pretty cool of him but Since you guys are professionals in the same field I'm sure you have some kind of a better understanding of what's going on with this controller So please feel free to contact me that would be great....if not ,that's fine too !!!! Long live Marionettes!!!! Xoxo. Thank you very, very veryyyy much for your time!! Trevor from Ontario Canada.

This was FANTASTIC! Thanks to Art and Sarah (and to Liz and team for curating the project). Loved Albrecht Roser's advice to take a shot of schnapps before performing (tee hee!) and his advice to find 3 new discoveries each time you perform. Art, your director's layers of sediment analogy was truly wonderful, too. I'll be humming "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" all night and sending love to Wally...
