Regarding the magazine cap - yeah, it'll work loose, it's just meant to be hand-tight so you can disassemble the weapon for cleaning and servicing, so I wouldn't consider that a failure - just something to stay aware of. Running it like you would in a class is kind of an artificial usage, unless you're going to war! Regarding the action being stiff - is it perhaps just fouled? After a couple of hundred back-to-back rounds, I imagine that chamber and bolt and slide assembly are pretty covered in grime.

Right handed, also brass down, I think brass up is for people who want the rim of the round to hold it in an inferior card. For the sling I used paracord and a hook and its a little shorter and less intrusive than the nylon strap. Gotta proof it out in a class.

The most universal part of preparedness is Hard Work. No matter what the disaster is you're likely going to need to work really hard (or spend a lot of money) to fill the gap of whatever is disabled/destroyed by the emergency. Financial stability is the most missed prep.
