The Homestead Engineer
США
Добавлен 24 фев 2023
I used to work as an engineer. Now I apply those skills to every aspect of my everyday life to make it more enjoyable and efficient. I want to share my crazy inventions, designs, and ideas with you. They mostly apply to homesteading, but also to our RV, children's toys, or whatever furniture my wife wants.

Starting a Successful Chicken Egg Business for Kids
I heard you mention an app for it. I have one that I installed yesterday 8/16/24 and the light sensor isn't working. It would be great to open it with a remote or by phone as our coop is about 250 yards from the house. What is the app you mentioned? Thank you
If your light sensor isn’t working you need to send it back. It should come working correctly out of the box. It’s possible to program it without the light sensor but it’s a pain. The app is also kind of clunky, and uses the light sensor to program the door. There is no WiFi or Bluetooth so it can’t be opened remotely. Check out their tutorial video here: ruclips.net/video/Tx7I-1FhTuU/видео.htmlsi=oLfTTSnODdtMTD_I A link to their app can be found on their website: run-chicken.com I think I’m going to make a one year review video today and go over some of these shortcomings of the door. Let me know if you have any other questions.
It's safe, for birds and people?
With all the holes in the door, this is only suitable for climates that don't get too cold.
I don’t know about that, but if your coop is that sealed up I would be concerned about proper ventilation and them breathing the ammonia from their waste.
What about water freezing in winter?
I live in a mild climate. It rarely gets below 30F and at worst hits 20f but only over night. I insulate the pipe and that has worked so far. One year a mouse chewed up my insulation and my pipe burst. That was annoying but usually it’s fine. Sorry if you live in a very cold climate.
You should perhaps harvest rainwater from the roof into gutters that fill the water tanks. With a minimal, inline sand or charcoal filter using a cheap irrigation filter and cloth. Place water tanks below the lowest point of the roof for gravity fed water. Rainwater is often healthier than municipal tap water.
If I lived in a different climate I would do that. I live in the desert where it might rain twice the whole summer. Even when it rains it’s is about 1/4” at most.
Yup, happens all the time with my young hens we feed them organic food and scraos
What’s the strangest one you ever got?
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 we got a egg that had a horn from one end
Protect your animals better but let the fox live too
He didn’t get in. I’m not going to kill him
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 oh okay, sorry :)
He’s beautiful
Agreed
Just feed him and make him your pet
I think he is too old for that
Do you sell your coop plans?
I don’t yet. I’ve been asked a lot but haven’t had time to make plans for it. I’d have to rebuild it to take accurate measurements and good pictures. Hopefully one day I will
Clicking the buy button now to order an electric fence ✅
Good idea. Did you see my video of when I got mine? I would recommend the high quality stakes but the charger is great and the net quality is very good.
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 I haven’t but I will check it out. Our chickens are still babies but we just put a coop together and I want to do what I can. Thanks for your helpful videos.
@Rivera_Homestead it’s an important video. We lost five chickens to a stray dog before we got the electric fence.
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 I’m so sorry for your losses. ❤️
You need better fencing around chickens. They can jump mesh like that no problem. If you can do wooden post and wire at bottom then attach that kind of electric net along the top the won’t get, and you won’t need to electrify the top section.
I’ll consider that
A farmer in Newfoundland fed coyotes left over parts from a butcher and they left his cattle alone. Put out cat food & see if it helps.
I feel like that would just keep him coming back, and if I ever stopped, he would go after the chickens.
He’s thinking of putting in an order from ACME
Beep beep!
😂😂😂
Beautiful
It’s hard to be angry at them.
Did he climbed that fance!!!???
Yeah, I didn’t stick around to see how he got down, but he went up it like it was nothing. I had no idea foxes could do that
Feed him something. Leave him a toy. He could be your friend & maybe he will leave your chickens alone. Live in peace with that beautiful & rare predator!❤
I think he is beautiful, but I don’t want him around. I’m not going to hurt him but I’m not going to encouraging him to stay either
Thats a grey fox they climb trees like a champ.
I didn’t know that before this happened. That changes things a little.
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 grey fox are actually an arboreal hunter, killing more prey in trees than on the ground.
Where’s the 22?
I usually would agree with you, but foxes have a soft spot in my heart. They are so beautiful. Maybe I’ll feel differently if he finds a way into the coop.
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 don't be the person that finds out too late
He's casing the joint, he'll come back with rubber boots when you least expect it. Can't blame him, who doesn't like chicken?
Lol, this is why I love the RUclips comment section!!! 🤣
How do you keep mice & predators from going in through the open door during the day?
I’ve since added an electric fence. I have a cat for the mice. She is a ruthless killer. Lol. Check out this video on why I upgraded. Installing Electric Netting to Keep Out Dogs | Premier 1 SolarStop80 Energizer Review ruclips.net/video/8CpTKmfDyKg/видео.html
We do the same thing
Do you worry about the poop on the ground? I was wondering if that is bad for them to drink.
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 Well two summers in now with no ill effects so I'm going to go with it's fine. 🤣
@EK--ry3lr same her, I just was t sure if I was lucky or good.
That's a Gray Fox. much rarer than the common Red Fox. Grays can live in trees in warm weather and will take over the nests of hawks and other large birds if possible. they are much larger physically than the Red Fox. a Red weighs 10lbs max and a Gray can get 16-18lbs. and both of the LOVE chicken.
I had no idea! Thats so cool! Thanks for the info. I’ve seen him around once before but only at night. Is it common for them to be out hunting at dusk?
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 Gray fox are mostly Nocturnal. that one's only out because the chickens are only out during the daytime. their main source of food is that they climb trees (it's crazy) and hunt birds at night. search youtube for 'Gray Fox climbs trees'.
I see grey fox all the time where I live. Rarely see red. So maybe rare in certain areas
Could be. the Grays are not nearly as skittish as the Reds are. Reds have to outrun you and the Grays know you and I can't climb trees like they can.
@@Omahaguy68131Red foxes in the UK can also climb like cats

Used your code, thank you!
Thank you! I think it’s a great door. I think you’ll be happy with it.
what's the point of spending all this money on it if you have to reset it manually and check everytime to see if it closed or not?
Good question! I’ve actually grown to trust it. I didn’t trust the cheap knock off door. There wasn’t a point in having it because it was so unreliable. The run chicken is actually really reliable. I made this video shortly after purchasing it and still didn’t trust it. A year later now, and I rarely check it. I just works. I have a security camera so when I want to check it I can, but I still don’t have to go outside.
eggs are 3-8 dollars a dozen bro.
Listen carefully. I said you could save $2/dozen. Raising eggs yourself costs between $3-5/ dozen depending on what type of food you give them. Therefore you will save about $2/dozen over the quality eggs that are somewhat comparable to the ones you’ll produce.
@andrewchristie2970 that is crazy! Where I live in CA the best eggs are close to $10/do. California is dumb. Why does anyone still live here?
Good stuff. Highly recommend a mobile chicken trailer if you can do it and have land. Fresh grass every day and free fertilizer. Run them 3 days behind cattle if you can rotate them too and you’ll have the best land.
That is the ultimate dream isn’t it? I’m on 1/2acre of hilly land. We hope to one day buy enough land to do that.
My mystic maran can eat all bugs before anyone even sees them. 😂😂 no matter how many I toss in…
Chickens love bugs. More bugs = better eggs. In my opinion.

How do I become a flight test engineer?
Get a degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering, work for a small aerospace company that is building, testing, and flying new prototype airplanes. Then be the best engineer you can be and get lucky.
Has there been any updates on this?
I very sorry to everyone for the lack of progress on this. I started remodeling my kitchen and had to set this aside for now. I’m hoping to restart this project in about a month. My wife needed a new kitchen, so the chickens will have to wait.
Thank you so much!!! I've been reading and watching reviews on this but really hated to spend $160 (with tax) on amazon. Thanks for saving me $60
You’re welcome! Glad it worked out for you. It’s nice because it gives me a little bit of a kickback too. Thank you!

Thank you. I’m in the middle of renovating my kitchen so it might be a few weeks before I put out a new video, but hang in there. I’ll be back soon.
We saw smaller ones like that coming out of winter. But with full spring on we are back to normal.
I never thought to associate it with winter. Why do you think that is?
@@thehomesteadengineer-1 My thought is with it being cooler and shorter days they don't "grow" it as long so while some skip a day some of ours would produce 1 a day and they were just small.
