So boxer engines have a crankshaft per pair of cylinders, and a flat engine only use one crankshaft. 👍 I think people are confused because they don’t fully understand the parts and operation of an engine

The Griffon is not a modified Merlin, it started life as a de-rated R engine but was put into the background as there was no aircraft project for it.

I’ve owned 2 cars with CVT transmissions … a Nissan & now an Infiniti. No CVT problems. They’re smooth, quiet, and accelerate right along. Of course I’m not out there flooring the accelerator at every opportunity, nor am I burning doughnuts every night. And I’ve talked to Infiniti mechanics: the current transmissions are way improved from the initial transmissions introduced in the early 2000s. So … no worries.

its called squeezing transmission ,steel conicle pulleys driven through a steel chain. so Not much torque available fir hill climbing . The steel pulleys or the chains wear out due to friction and heat

This gets some information correct - but complicates it with _a lot_ of incorrect information, unfounded claims, confusing animations, and poor images. Does not resemble a real boxer punching. We are not having more boxer engines - the number of companies making flat engines has dropped by ⅔ in the last 50 yrs. Want nothing to do with CVT transmissions. I will never buy a vehicle with one. An automatic transmission that shifts can always be rebuilt and if the intention is to keep the vehicle long term, it is the best option. I can't imagine having to drive a vehicle gently all the time to make the transmission last. What is the auto industry turning into??

Hi I have a Nissan Xtrail 2015 2.5 CVT AWD GCC UAE Specifications, i replaced the transmission after i faced major stuttering issues 370,000km and now 430,000km.when driving slow in traffic from 20kmph to 40kmph, i am facing slight stuttering while gear is shifting down ,- is this again transmission failure? It works fine if i drive above 40kmph to 120kmph . please let me know if there is any other solution to fix this

Its not rocket science, a conventional gearbox has gears that positively take the load off the engine and deliver to the wheels..A CVT metal belt will always has a degree of slippage from driver pulley to the driven pulley...Most noticeable in first gear where most load is applied to move the stationary car...Toyota have a first gear within the CVT unit to offset this....Simple easy mechanics

If youre an audi owner youll know the problem lies with the tcu wiring not the mechanics of the actual box. I think the cvt is pure genius but manufacturers dont let us enjoy the full benefit prefering to focus on economy. Im sure theres plenty of potential on offer to make it more suitable to sporty driving than currently offered.

Actually the information is correct about camshaft drives and external dimensions; significant to elegance of engine design and airframe compatibility. The reference to R engine is wrong except in bore and stroke. Merlins had end fed crank oiling partway through the war, something which ought to have been obvious to engine design long before and incidentally used by Triumph Twin bike from 1937 till the end circa 1980. Cam drive from flywheel (propeller) end also normal on some cars, eg Alvis and i believe on First World War Hispano Suiza V8. It reduces the torsional vibration of the shafts. The RR Heritage Trust publications give more, and reliable, information than is available for most engines. But as a short introduction for the layman this is a reasonable little taster.

What a pleasure to drive CVT , I drive Creta Hyundai absolutely no issues after 75000 km
